JUNE, 2018 VOLUME 97 / ISSUE 3, CALVIN COX, EXALTED RULER NAPA CALIFORNIA
MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER
The month of May is almost over and it was a very busy month!
Backing up to April 27 - 29th your Lodge Officers attended the Ritual Contest for the Northwest District and the District Deputy Clinic at the Ukiah Lodge. The good news is your officers took third place bronze medals in the reading of the Ritual. Great job to all who were there. We all should be proud of their effort. I want to thank David Harms, Tim Jaeger and Mark Giosso for their great coaching job.
May 13th Mother’s Day Brunch was a great success with about 120 people attending. The brunch was very well prepared and served by our kitchen crew and volunteer members. The event was hosted by Vivian and Tom
McFarland. A big thanks to them for a great job! Thank you to everyone who helped with the event and made it a great success.
The photograph to the left of all the Exalted Rulers in our district was taken at the State Convention right after the “Purple Pig Walk”.
Monica Shepard, our Esteemed Loyal Knight, has been a fantastic grant writer. We just received another $2000 Gratitude Grant from Grand Lodge. We are going to use is for the Crosswalk Church to supplement their food pantry for people in need. Great job Monica!! Also we thank all our members who are volunteering at the Crosswalk Church the 3rd Tuesday of the month to help with handing out the food and setting up. Anyone who would like to help please let me or the Secretary know.
Remember, June 9th is our District Flag Day at the Veterans Home in Yountville. Anyone who would like to help cook or serve in the buffet line, please let me know.
The Father’s Day BBQ will be on Friday, June 15th. Be sure to attend and bring the Mothers and Kids for a fun evening! Also there will be fun and prizes!! On June 20th we will be initiating 7 - 10 new members into the Lodge, come to the meeting and make them feel welcome.
For the volunteer and Elk of the Month I have chosen Frances Stapleton for Volunteer of the Month and Karl Hanson as Elk of the Month. That's all for now.
Fraternally, Calvin Cox ~ Exalted Ruler

FROM YOUR LODGE SECRETARY
Hello to all Members!
It looks like summer is almost here, even though the hot weather is not as yet. There are a lot of great events coming up in June and July, please check the bulletin for details. Our District Flag Day will be on Saturday, June 9th, Fathers' Day BBQ will be on Friday, June 15th, and our Association Vice President will be on Saturday, July 21st. Plan to attend all of these events.
At our last Lodge meeting, held on May 2nd, we initiated ten new members. They are: Robert Arno, Michael Carlson, Rachael Clark, James Ronald Cravea, Daniel Czap, Michael Gibson, Jason Lozano, Daryl Muromoto, Alexander Myers, and Kurt White. We are anxious for them to get involved in the activities at the Lodge. At this writing there are still 62 members who are delinquent with their yearly dues. There is a list of these members in the office and behind the bar. The bartenders have been instructed not to serve these members until their dues are current. Please pay your dues, this is what keeps the Lodge functioning and thriving.
Recently the Exalted Ruler, Leading Knight, Trustee Chairman and myself went to San Diego to attend the CHEA conference. We came back with a lot of new material to help us keep the Lodge running as efficiently as possible. We also met many Elk members from all over the State of California and Hawaii. It is interesting to talk to other Lodges to find out how they deal with the running of their Lodge.
As always, please let me know if you have any membership questions or concerns. Fraternally, Judy Fisher - Lodge Secretary

Lodge Activities-June 2018
RV/Cabin Trip: May 7th-10th. This was our annual trip to Plymouth, 17 Rigs and 6 cabins = 45 Happy Campers. Great food and the
weather was perfect. One day was wine tasting at Deavers, then the Italian Dinner for 43, delicious. Cocktails at the Jackson Elks and
a few of us had breakfast at the Dead Fly. Many thanks to Bill Sollows for BBQing and thanks to everyone for contributing to the Pot
Luck & Soup dinners. Bill also provided us with a campfire. Thanks to Cheryl & Ben Haslet for providing all the plates, napkins, salt,
& Pepper. Dave and myself were the wagon masters but we couldn't keep everything on track without our Greasers Mike and
Judy Biggs. Next year we are trying to have entertainment, and will try a new Winery/Bistro for lunch, Teresa's for dinner one night
and the Jackson Elks have invited us to have dinner, this dinner is pending. Good trip. Save the dates next year May 6th-9th.
Mother's Day: This year was on May 13th, 112 folks enjoyed the Champagne Brunch. Our officers did the Mother's Day ritual, they
all looked great in their lodge attire. The butterfly theme was very nice, decorations and flowers were beautiful. Food was outstanding
and all enjoyed the champagne. Gifts were presented to the oldest Mom, youngest Mom, and the Mom with the most children. Many
thanks to the McFarland's for chairing Mother's Day 2018.
Non Napa Lodge Activity: Most of you know we receive the newsletters from the other lodges in our district. Please take some time
to check on some of their events. Recently there was a great concert at the San Rafael Lodge. A fun group called Pride and Joy
presented a wonderful performance. You needed to get tickets early as they were sold out. I am hoping we can get them to Napa to
perform. However, they are very popular, we shall try.
Event Meeting: We had a nice turnout for our Events meeting on the 22nd. We have some new events planned for this year and
volunteers signed up for many of the up and coming events. There will be a Yard Sale, a Fun and Games event, Sock Hop and more.
Hot August Sunday was discussed and final plans are in the making. I have been asked to let all those interested in entering a Chili in
the Cook Off to announce this year 1st place winner will receive $100.00, 2nd $50.00 and 3rd $25.00 along with a trophy. You will
need to bring at least a gallon and no canned or packaged chilies. Entry forms will soon be in the front lobby for both car show and
Chili. Also, we need your Pop Ups.

BOB DUITSMAN BIOGRAPHY - CHEA PRESIDENT 2018-2019
Robert "Bob" Duitsman was born in Inglewood, CA, and attended local schools including Inglewood High School, the University of Southern California, and Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, receiving a Juris Doctor degree in 1981.
Bob joined the Culver City Elks Lodge in 1989. Moving through the chairs he was elected Exalted Ruler for 1993-94 and again in 1995-96. He was Association Vice-President in 2001-2002 during the presidency of John Carvalho and his wife Sandy and then District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 2005-2006 during the national presidency of the Honorable Louis J. "Jim" Grillo and his wife Lucia. He served on several district committees, but developed a particular interest in the ritual program. He has been a ritual judge since 1995 and served in a number of positions in the ritual community leading to CHEA Ritual Training Chair and finally CHEA Ritual Contest Chair in 2007-08. He also served on the CHEA Major Project Board of Trustees from 2013-2016, the last year as its Chair. On the Grand Lodge level, he served on the Committee on Judiciary for six years, 2009-15, the last two as Chair, and is currently in his third year as a Justice of the Grand Forum, in effect the Supreme Court of the Order. For two years he also served on the Grand Lodge Pardon Commission.
For over thirty-five years Bob has been an attorney in private practice in the Culver City area, with emphases in the areas of estate planning and parole revocation defense.
He is a Past Chair of the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, a Past President of the Culver City Lions Club, and a Past President of the Inglewood District Bar Association. For over twenty years he was a Temporary Judge of the Los Angeles Municipal and Superior Courts. For more than thirty years he has been a volunteer at the Culver City Senior Center, helping its members with their legal problems on a volunteer basis. What little he knows about speaking before groups he owes in large part to the Toastmasters organization, of which he is a thirty year member with a designation of Distinguished Toastmaster. He also knows a little about parliamentary procedure, having attained the designation of Professional Registered Parliamentarian through the National Association of Parliamentarians. He is finally an ordained elder at Knox Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, having served four terms on its governing board.
Bob met the love of his life, Beth, in 1982, and they married in 1987. They do not have any children, unless you count their two dogs, Winston and Bobby. Together they live in the Ladera Heights area of Los Angeles County.
Bob enjoys gardening, puttering around the house, spending time with his dogs, and is one of only 144 people on earth who have finished all 32 editions of the Los Angeles Marathon, with a best time of 3:52.
Bob and Beth are proud and excited to have the opportunity to serve as President and First Lady of the California-Hawaii Elks Association this year, meeting and making friends during their travels, and talking about their slogan "Honoring the Past - Embracing the Future".

VETERAN’S CORNER Leo Garfield, Associate Member Napa Lodge, PER Richmond Lodge
“And those caissons go rolling along.” That’s the Army song, and I must confess I don’t know the song for the Coast Guard. Richard
E. Simmons, age 73, put in a combined 30 years in the Army, Army Reserves, and Coast Guard Reserves. Rich was 18 when he
enlisted in the Army. His Basic Training was at Ford Ord, California, and he did another 8 weeks in Fort Sill, Oklahoma learning fire
direction control. This is a computer-type job that gages the distance from the target, the height, and the correct angle that goes with
firing a 105 Howitzer. This is a field cannon used during WWII, and the Korean War. It’s a cannon that packs a devastating explosion
from a good distance away. It’s very mobile, and can be towed behind a truck. Rich was sent to Korea where he did more training,
and became an E-5 (Buck Sergeant). The training was located close to the DMZ line. Of course the war was over in Korea, but that’s
an everyday question, even now. After one year in Korea his next stop was Fort Lewis, Washington, doing the same job. Rich was
discharged in 1965, and for a brief time was in the lumber business. In 1966 Rich joined the Highway Patrol where he learned the
famous logo, “Star on my door, one on my chest, gun on my hip, and right to arrest.” Anyway, direct from the Academy he was
assigned to the Baldwin Park Freeway in Los Angeles, where almost all recruits go. After a while, he returned to San Francisco, was
promoted to Sergeant, back to Los Angeles on the Motors, and then to Marin County where he retired in 1996, completing 20 years.
We might call this Chapter 3. He did Army time, Law Enforcement time, and now U.S. Coast Guard ,to round out a non-stop life.
Rich joined the Coast Guard in 1976 after the urging of a friend, and succeeded in keeping his former Army rank. His new rank now
became Petty Officer First Class. They assigned him to recruiting, and especially wanted police officers to join the Coast Guard. He
quickly moved up in rank, and soon became a Chief Petty Officer. His duties included background investigation, some criminal
investigation, and some on-board investigation. As a Reserve Special Agent, he sometimes wore civilian clothes. At some point in
this time he was urged to take a Warrant Officer exam. The Warrant Officer rank in Military Service is a much coveted rank. The
Warrant Officer is not an Officer nor is he an enlisted man, however he warrants a salute. Warrant Officers are usually assigned to
people with special skills. Some Warrant Officers run motor pools, others run payroll departments. In Rich’s case, he was assigned to
be a liaison person between the Coast Guard and Law Enforcement. Rich passed the exam, and became a Chief Warrant Officer 1.
Before retiring he achieved the Rank of CW Warrant Officer 4. There are a list of Rich’s commendations: Commandant’s Letter of
Commendation, Operational; DOT Outstanding Unit’s Award; CG Meritorious Unit Commendation; CG Bicentennial Unit
Commendation; CG Reserve Good Conduct Medal x3; National Defense Service Medal x2; Korean Defense Service Medal, and
Humanitarian Service Medal.
This article would be incomplete without mentioning Carolyn. She and Rich were married in April 1968, and have enjoyed 50 years
of the good life. Congratulations! Thank you Rich for your years in Elkdom, thanks for your Law Enforcement time, and above all, a
special thanks for your two Military Service times of 30 years.
The Elks Ear While roaming the vast area in the Lodge's back yard, I noticed our pet Elk had a new look. I hurried back to the bar to find out
what was going on. Because that is where you learn everything there is to know! My good friend Byron explained to me that
this is what all elks should look like, with swept back horns and a jaunty look. Well OK, I can buy that I guess.
The new E.R. has been in office now for a full month and has not threatened to quit. Calvin Cox said he is not a quitter, but he
might have to hurt a few to keep us moving up the Elk's ladder. Cal has been E.R. before and we prospered under his care. He
has some good ideas that may even work.
Tuesday, May 22nd, we had our events meeting to plan for the upcoming year. As usual we are going to need a lot of help, yes
that means you! We did have some brand new members agree to chair a sock hop. I wouldn't miss that, if I can only find a pair
with no holes in them!
Next year Tim Jaeger will be our CHEA STATE PRESIDENT. This will turn our Lodge upside down. As this is his home lodge,
his homecoming events will surely test our metal. We have a year to get our ducks in a row! I hope that will be easier than
Herding cats. As we will need to have special committees, we will need people to help with this as well.
Being I dutiful have covered everything you need to know, I am going back to look at our Elk.
Remember the best is yet to come.
