ANDOLAN ?

Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that

mobilized tribal people, adivasis, farmers,environmentalists and human rights activistsagainst the Sardar Sarovar Dam being builtacross the Narmada river, Gujarat, India.

FORMATION OF THE ANDOLAN

Investigations regarding the efficient use of water in theNarmada River was carried out in 1947.

Due to Inter-State differences in implementing the final

decision in sharing of water the Central Governmentformed a Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal.

The tribunals decision was declared after 10 years. Asper the Tribunal's decision, 30 major, 135 medium, and

3000 small dams, were granted approval forconstruction including raising the height of the SardarSarovar Dam.

In 1985,Patkar found that the project was in stand-

still because of an order from Ministry ofEnvironment and Forests.

Reasons >> Non-fulfillment of basicenvironmental conditions and the

World Bank reviews the project.

The Morse Commission finds the project is notup to the mark.

World Bank withdraws from the funding.

Patkar gave a written petition to Supreme Courtand the court ruled to suspend the project anddirected the states to first complete rehabilitationand replacement process.

Supreme Court also deliberated on this issuefurther for several years but finally upheld theTribunal Award and allowed the construction toproceed, subject to conditions.

Where are the ethics?

Rehabilitation:

1. Not enough rehabilitation sites.

1. The sites set up, have no electricity, no water, no farming,no trees. So, What will the people do??

1. House shown at the time of promise, were all together

different from the houses which were actually allotted.

1. Other option is to take inadequate cash & forget everythingelse.
