Introduction: Narmada§ Narmada district is located at the southern part of Gujarat

§ The district shares its border with the State of Maharashtra

and is bounded with Surat in the south, Vadodara in the

north, and Bharuch in the west

§ The district has 4 talukas, which includes Nandod, Sagbara,

Tilakwada and Dediapada

§ Located in Nandod taluka, Rajpipla is the district

headquarter and the main industrial town of Narmada

district

§ Focus industry sectors include, textiles, food &

agriculture and chemicals

§ Tourist places: Rajwant Palace, Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife

Sanctuary and Shoolpaneshwar Temple, and Sardar

Sarovar Dam Talukas

Economy and Industry Profile § A major strata of population is dependent upon agriculture for

their livelihood

§ Production of banana and cotton are the key horticulture

crops in the district

§ An investment of INR 600 Crore (USD 1.42 million) was

observed in the district between 1988-07. Industries such as

textiles, sugar, and chemicals observed major investments

and substantial growth during the past two decades

§ Over 860 Small Scale Industries (SSIs), engaged in repair &

services, wood products, paper, and food products are

present in the district of which over 390 units are present in

Nandod taluka

Agriculture§ Major crops produced in the district are banana,

mango, cucurbits and cotton

§ In 2006-07, Narmada district had the highest production of banana amounting to 2,78,400

Metric Tonnes (MT), followed by cucurbits with a

production of 14,835 MT

§ Total production of cotton in the district was 96,600

§ In the four talukas of the district, there are over 860 units generating 990 jobs, with investments to the tune of INR 170 lakh (USD 0.41million)

§ Small Scale Industries (SSIs) are mainly engaged in repairing & services, ceramics, wood products, paper and rubber products

§ Over 840 SSIs are present in the repair & services, providing maximum number of employment

§ Maximum units (398) with an investment of INR 103.36 lakh (USD 0.25 million), and employment (459 persons) are observed in Nandod taluka

Economy Drivers

§ Agriculture provides the maximum opportunity to generate

sustainable livelihood and employment for the villagers

§ Industry sectors such as textiles, food products, wood & rubber

products and repair & servicing are the supporting pillars of the

district economy

§ The district owns some of the major tourist destinations such as,

Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary & Temple and Rajwant

Palace, which accounts for a healthy influx of tourists

§ Narmada houses Herbal Botanical Garden, consisting of almost

70 species of herbal plants, which are used for the ayurvedic

and natural therapy of treatment, and also helps in increasing

medical value travel in the district

Power & Water Supply

Water

Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three

main sources, viz Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB),

irrigation canal, and Sardar Sarovar Project.

Sardar Sarovar Project

§ The project envisages supply of water for drinking purposes, irrigation, and industrial use

§ Sardar Sarovar Project water for industrial use is made available through branch canals

§ With a total length of 3.65km, Wadia is the branch canal, that supplies water to the Narmada district. The starting point of the canal is Nandod and end point is Koliary

§ One Hydro power station is present in the district

§ A substation of 132 KV is present in Tilakwada in Narmada, connected

with Jambuva in Vadodara

Education And Health

Health:

§ The district has 23 primary health care and 4 community health

centers, with 2 government hospitals

§ Narmada has a several private hospitals which provide a

comprehensive range of tertiary and secondary care services

§ Some of the hospitals present in Narmada includes, Rajpipla hospital and Netra Seva Trust Hospital

Education:

§ There are 663 primary, 56 secondary and 23 higher secondary schools in the district

§ With over 770 seats, there are 6 ITIs offering several industrial training programs which include, fitting, computer operations and diesel mechanics, etc

§ Some of the colleges present in the district are M.R. Arts & Science College and Ratnasinhji Mahida Commerce College

Tourism

§ Built in 1910, Rajwant Palace is one of the most favoured tourist

destinations in the district. The palace includes a royal museum and a

heritage hotel

§ Spread over an area of 600 sq. km, the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife

Sanctuary is present in the district having a diversified floral presence

with more than 550 floral species and a wide range of wildlife species

§ The Shoolpaneshwar Temple and Sardar Sarovar Dam are located

in Kevadia, 27 km from Rajpipla

§ Other places of interest in the district are Vadia Palace, Dashavatar

Ranchhodrai Mandir, and Nizamshah Dargah
