CANBERRA EXCURSIONYear 6 are about to embark on their excursion to the national capital, Canberra next week. This excursion follows the curriculum unit they have been studying on Democracy in Australia. The students will have the opportunity to see first-hand how our parliament works by visiting Parliament House and learning how the House of Representative and the Senate operate. They will also learn how our voting system works and be treated to a lovely afternoon tea at Parliament House. While in Canberra they will be visiting the National Art Gallery, the Mint, Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport and the highlight - a visit to the War Memorial. Our school receives a rebate for each student from the Federal Government under the PACER scheme (Parliament and Civics Rebate Scheme). This allows students who travel to Canberra and have learnt about civics and citizenship in the classroom to see their knowledge brought to life when they experience Canberra first hand.COMPETITIONSEvery year many of our students enter competitions and compete against children throughout Australia and throughout Asia and the Pacific regions. This year many of our students have displayed their talents in a variety of areas including Maths, English, Digital Technology, Science and Writing. We have just received our Maths ICAS results and our school has achieved some outstanding awards. Congratulations to all our students who sat this test. Well done to these students who received a Credit: Maddison Sparrow, Aniesha Krishna, Thomas Wheeler, Tom Ryan, Mietta Smith, Guhan Gunasekhar, Emily Walton-Potts, Caitlyn Evans and Penelope Longstaff. Both Maeve Harris and Darcy Gleeson received a Distinction, an amazing feat! A team of 6 students compete in the Maths Olympiad each year against schools throughout Australia. This competition sees our students complete a series of problem solving activities over a period of several weeks. Our school did very well against their competitors from throughout Australia and New Zealand and four of our students received a special mention. Lara Sunderland came in the top 25%, Tom Ryan in the top 20%, and Mietta Smith and Maeve Harris in the top 10%. Congratulations to these great mathematicians.

NEWSLE T TER

CANTEEN NEWSThankyou to everyone who made Grandparents day so great. To Wayne Wall, Alan Tame and Craig Jollow on the BBQ. To Nicole Gleeson-Lendon, Cathy Evans, Lisa Hartog and Donna Bower who all baked cakes, slices and scones. To all the other helpers who served either on the BBQ table or in the canteen, and especially to those terrific grandparents and children who waited so patiently. I seriously misjudged how many of you there would be. I’m sorry about that.We are still looking for volunteers at canteen so if you can spare some time we can sure use the help.We hope that Year 6 are enjoying their excursion. If any Year 5 students would like to help at canteen, then this is the week they should ask their teachers.

Thank you Kim Owers(Supervisor) & Nikki Finn (Assistant)
