II. Company’s Background/ Profile
San Miguel Brewery Inc. (SMBI)
San Miguel Brewery Inc. (SMBI) is the largest producer of beer in the Philippines,
with nine out of ten beer drinkers preferring its brands. San Miguel Beer was first produced
by La Fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel, an upstart brewery in the heart of Manila that
began its operations in 1890. It received the Royal Grant from the Spanish king to brew beer
in the Philippines, then a colony of Spain. In 1963, the brewery was renamed San Miguel
Corp. (SMC) to reflect its growing ventures into food and packaging. As the beer business
grew at a steady pace, it provided the foundation from which SMC expanded its interests
from food, beverage and packaging, to power, oil, airline and infrastructure. Today, SMC is
the country's biggest diversified conglomerate.
All SMB's beer operations were then under the San Miguel Beer Division, a business
unit of SMC. SMB was incorporated on July 26, 2007, and the domestic beer business was
spun off from SMC to SMB on October 1, 2007. The spin-off of SMC's domestic beer
business into SMB was intended to realize the value of SMC's flagship business. In 2010,
the acquisition of San Miguel Brewing International Limited (SMBIL) enabled SMB to achieve
full integration of its domestic and international beer business. SMB is now at a greater
advantage to champion the iconic San Miguel brand across the Asia-Pacific region.
From a single product produced in a single brewery in 1890, SMB has developed an
array of popular beer products over the past century, catering to the distinct tastes and
preferences of beer drinkers across all segments and markets in the Philippines. Today, it
carries a portfolio of ten strong and popular beer brands: San Mig Light, Red Horse Beer,
Cerveza Negra, Gold Eagle Beer, San Miguel Strong Ice, San Miguel Super Dry, San Miguel
Premium All-Malt Beer, San Miguel Flavoured Beer, San Mig Zero, and its flagship brand,

San Miguel Pale Pilsen. These products carry distinct attributes that cater to all
segments of the Philippine beer market and have earned international recognition for quality,
winning in the prestigious Monde International Selection almost on an annual basis, among
other awards and citations.
The Company has six production facilities strategically located across the Philippines
to ensure product availability and freshness, and a highly developed distribution system
serving approximately 471,000 retail outlets.
San Miguel Beer products have consistently dominated the market for beer in the
Philippines, the country's largest alcoholic beverage segment. Despite its dominant market
position, SMB continues to find new ways to grow further its volumes and its market share in
the Philippine beverage industry.
III. The Nature of the Work in My Office
At SMBI San Fernando, my day starts with me greeting colleague with “Good
Morning!” and a smile. During Mondays we attend the weekly flag ceremony together with
other departments. We also have our announcements and morning exercises done during
this day of the week. Going back to the office I then turn on the computer and continue the
work assigned to me.
In our department, I work with 12 talented people. Most of them have been working
for the company for many years and have their own families already. Angelito David was one
of the tenured employees; he’s been with SMB for 35 years and still counting. I had the
privilege to ask how he managed to do such. Some factors as to why according to him was
culture and benefits. As day goes by I can truly understand why most employees stay and in
the future retire in this company. SMB truly care of its employees, they give out great
benefits to its regulars. Most companies give out 13th month pay as bonuses as the year
P a g e | 8
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY
ends but in SMB they had up to 15th month pay of bonus. I can say that this company is one
of the most generous when it comes to salary and benefits.
Under HR Department, we have services and recruitment. I had the chance to be
exposed on both. I can say that I enjoyed both equally. Though there are two groups in our
department, Mr. Noel Nunag would always remind us that we are still one department. That,
any bad feedbacks towards HR reflects the HR as a whole and there should be no one to
point fingers at. Our bond together as a department is incomparable, as my supervisor would
say that our department is a family. During lunch break as much as possible we eat together,
all of us.
I remember how I was worried at first that I wouldn’t be able to jive well with them
since most of them are not on the same age bracket as mine. Having to work with
experienced colleagues helped me develop myself a lot. I can tell that they want me to learn
a lot from my short time in the office as an ojt. Especially my supervisor Mr. Lawrence
Gutierrez, who was very eager in mentoring me on every aspect of HR. It’s great how
through this experience I had a glimpse of how I want to build my career. I will truly treasure
the experience I had. I can tell that the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired during my OJT at
this company are things that I would be proud of all my life.

San Miguel Brewery Inc. products are surely familiar to every Filipino citizen.
Sales are done through the use of various distribution channels. Retailers,
Wholesalers, Distributors are some as to how the company’s products reach its
consumers. Production runs 24 hours to cater the insane demand of SMB Beers
nationwide.

HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY
d. What are the marketing aids/promotional gimmicks used?
In SMBI, they use TV Commercials, Billboards, Tarpaulins and more
marketing aids. I believe that they allot large amount of funds in advertising or
promotions. SMBI also uses the internet in promoting their products. SMBI advertise
their products very well this reflects on how long they’ve been on top in the beer
industry.
e. What sales records are kept in the department?
Unfortunately, there are no sales record kept in the HRA Department of SMBI –
San Fernando.
f. What reports are made by the department?
In HRA Department, several reports are made. Tardiness/Absenteeism
reports are done and summarized monthly. Training schedule reports are also done
by the department. Pay slips are also made at our department. Incidents that take
place under the plants are also reported first to the HR department. An evaluation
report of 3rd party services is another task done by our department. A lot more
reports are made, however, they are confidential to mention.

• Duties and Responsibilities/Work done in the Office
At SMBI HR Department, I’ve learned different works and duties especially in
our department, Human Resources Department. Through this duties and
responsibilities I learned to appreciate more the importance of the HR Department in
an organization. Some of the duties I’ve done are:
Maintain human resources records.
During my first week at SMBI, I was assigned to encode the Personal
Information Forms. This form contains details about each employee’s
address, age, etc. Details up to the employee’s parents are encoded for
future purposes. Included in this task was to organize their database and
check for missing info’s or corrupt files.
Inventory of training materials.
In this task I prepared an excel worksheet that contains training materials
that the department currently have and segmenting stuffs that can still be
used for future trainings. This also involves disposing materials that are of
no more use and only takes up space in the office.

Pay slip organizing and distribution.
This is done twice a month. My task is to arrange the pay slips into their
respective regions or departments and make sure they’re alphabetized.
Rice Ratio slip distribution is also done during this time.
Scheduling of Interviews
I had the chance to schedule interviews. After screening for qualified
candidates via resumes, we then call them to schedule for their initial
interview.
Facilitate Initial Interview and Exams
Together with Mr. Aeron Ong, I had the chance to conduct an initial
interview. In that initial interview we would assess the applicant if they
would proceed to the next step which is the exams.
Filing of 201 files
In this task I maintain employee files, making sure that documents are
placed on each specific employee’s folder.
Prepare Presentations
This task involves creating PowerPoint presentations to be used on
upcoming programs or events. Prepared a ppt for the holy mass
VI. Observed Organizational Values
Interpersonal Relationships
In the Human Resource Department, the employees are like family to each
other. I can say that they do care for each other. They do not simply see their
colleagues as coworkers, but treat them as family. Often times we have lunch
together and meriendas too. Everything just seems easier when you enjoy others’
company.
P a g e | 20
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY
Working Relationships with the Executive & Co-Workers
Based on my observation, executives have a good relationship with their
subordinates. They call each other “pare or kuya”, during non-toxic hours they share
stories. I can also say that Sir Royce, HR head of services, has the best sense of
humor among them. Both supervisors I must say are very open to suggestions and
they involve their team in the decision making.
Teamwork
Teamwork is well observed in our department. When problems come up you
can always ask for help. Most of them know their respective duties well and are
experts in giving tips on how you can finish your task effectively and efficiently.
Quality of Service Delivered
When it comes to quality there is no doubt that they provide the best quality of
service given the years of Excellency of the company. I believe one key to this
company’s success in terms of quality is its employees. Quality and consistency is
the key as they say.
Punctuality
In our department, associates do not use time cards. But nevertheless they
still come on time and most of the time stay late in the office. It’s great how they
are so dedicated to their work knowing that there is no overtime pay. Though there
are times that some would be late, but they make sure that they inform their
coworkers.
Personal Grooming
In my opinion, SMBI’s uniform is one of a kind. It’s very simple yet classy.
They are not that strict when it comes to grooming but employees themselves
make sure that they are always presentable.

VII. Problems Encountered During my Training & How I Solved Them
In my 250 hours of training in San Miguel Brewery – San Fernando, I’ve faced
challenges. First thing that challenged me was while encoding the PIFs of hundreds of
employees. Because these forms are hand written, some of the hand writings are very
difficult to understand. And this somehow affected the quality of work because of typos. It
was a tiring job to just encode information the whole day. But through time I managed to get
the hang of it. In addition to that Kuya James, also advised me to be patient and to not rush.
Another problem that challenged me was dealing with some rude people. This
happened when I was distributing pay slips. There was this time when an employee got high
pitched because It was taking sometime before I can find his pay slip but eventually I did.
This was a learning lesson for me to always stay calm and gave me more patience.
There are many more challenges that I’ve faced during my training but all of those
thought life lessons that I could always look back and say I’ve overcome things more than
this.
VIII. Recommendations/ Feedback for Off-Campus Training
For Company
One thing that I would recommend the HR Department is to start investing on
online job sites like Job Street. I noticed that in their department they still rely on job
fairs and old resumes when they seek for qualified applicants. By investing on job
street placements they would have a wider range of applicants. Job sites are
quickly growing in number this is because of the ease of access. I would say that
this is something they lack in their system given the number of manpower required
in running the company.
P a g e | 22
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY
For Practicum Program
I recommend that the practicum program increase their number of
coordinators. I believe that the coordinators have to much work for only 2 people.
There are too many students taking up practicum for the coordinators to guide or
orient. I also think that practicum program would have more impact to a graduating
student if they have it on a summer. Because having it on the last semester
together with other subjects makes it hard for students to manage time. Having to
still go to school after ojt hours was hard to manage. But after all these challenges
only prepares us for the real world.
