Henry Horton Election Rally

September 17—20, 2015

2

There were 14 trailers and approximately 30 people at

the Henry Horton State Park for the Nashville Music

City September Rally. The weather was wonderful for

the Rally. There were three new members who

attended who have joined or will join shortly- DW and

RitaAnn Weaver; John and Meriae Jackson; and Jay

and Gabi Jarrell with children Luke and Lani. Mike

Maurer had his son and grandson to the Rally with his

Airstream trailer, and Jim and Sara Lee had a couple

who are interested in buying an Airstream.

Jim Johnson Jr.-President, conducted the Annual Elec-

tion and Business meeting at the McCord Room in the

Henry Horton Lodge. After a one-hour meeting, the

group adjourned to the seafood buffet. The potluck

dinner on the first night was great. We have some

wonderful cooks in our group and there was more

than we could consume. The breakfast meals each

morning for three days were muffins/fruit; biscuits/

sausage/fruit. Pancakes with fruit was provided by

Tommy. There were lots of stories and jokes told

around the breakfast table and laughter all morning.

Jim discussed the International meeting in New Mexi-

co, and informed us of the changes to the bylaws vot-

ed on at the meeting. He conducted the election with

the slate of officers and appointments; Jeanie Tillman

was elected President; Linda Gough elected as 1st VP;

Jim Lee elected 2nd VP. Susan Martin was reappointed

as Recording Secretary; Tommy Shepherd elected to

Treasurer; Barry Collins, Nancy Kimbrough, Mike

Maurer, and Bobby Taylor elected to Trustee’s for one

year term; and Sara Lee, Rachel Shepherd, and Gene

Gough elected to Trustee’s for two year term.

Appointed to office were- Mike Maurer- Membership

Chairman; Dot Joiner- Finance Committee Chair; Charlie

Tillman-Corresponding Secretary; Sue Chasteen- Directo-

ry, Newsletter and Web Chair; and Jim Lee-Public Rela-

tions.

The “Step back in Time” Festival was reported to have

over 5,000 people attending for the Friday and Saturday

event. This is always the third weekend in September.

The campgrounds were in good shape and everyone

commented that they would like to come back next year.

Sunday devotion was conducted and a collection was

taken for the “Cents for Kids”. It was a great meeting,

and the Hosts were thanked for their work.

2015 REGION 6 RALLY

Region 6 Rally Report,

The Region 6 Rally was held at Sunroamer RV park in

Picayune, Mississippi from October 13th-17th. Nash-

ville Music City was represented by 9 units. Six of

these had just participated in the Americana Music

Caravan, held immediately prior. An enjoyable time

was had by the 60 or so rigs in attendance. The new

International President, Jim Schwerdfeger and wife

Raisin also attended.

Activities included a Ladies Hat Luncheon, a golf and

joker tournament, and instruction on how to operate

automatic embroidery sewing machines. Some Nash-

ville members toured the nearby NASA facility. The

cooking team from Louisiana, joined by Jessie and

Cathy Vest from the Memphis Unit served several

breakfasts and dinners. The food was outstanding.

Bill and Betty Lancaster, musicians from the Alabama

Unit, supplied excellent entertainment one night. You

may remember them from the Tennessee State Rally.

Foley RV, from Gulfport, brought six new rigs for eve-

ryone to see. One of the units sold. A huge, really

detailed, cake in the shape of an Airstream was pro-

vided by Foley.

There were two seminars presented during the rally.

One seminar was unit office training and the other was

about pursuing unit awards. Six individuals for our

unit attended each one. In addition, our new Music

City Unit president, Jeanie Tillman was installed.

Sunroamer RV Park is owned by a fellow Airstreamer,

and Robin has really upgraded the facilities since buy-

ing the park. It was a great site for the region rally. If

you are in the area, be sure to stop and spend a night

or two.

Jim Johnson

Technical Tips

I want to let you know about a technical reference that

will help you understand and maintain your Airstreams.

At the International Rally in Farmington, Howard Lefko-

witz, the chairman of the tech help group, held a series

of seminars on the care and feeding of Airstreams.

These seminars included helpful handouts, with highly

detailed information. These seminars included electri-

cal, propane, air conditioners and refrigerators, etc.

Reading these handouts is a real education, and they

are available on the wbcci.org website. The place to

look is: http://wbccicaravan.wbcci.net

This is the caravan section of the website. The

handouts are the blue hyperlink on the right side of the

page. More tech help is available on the main website

under the “Maintenance Info” tab. Then click on

“Airstream Tech Help Group”. Here is a link:

http://wbcci.org/maintenance-info/tech-help-group

This is a compilation of tech help articles in past Blue

Beret.

Take a few minutes and look at both of these re-

sources. I think you’ll agree that the time spent is time

well spent. It might even save you a dollar or two.

Sadly Howard passed away Sunday, October 4 at his

home in Maryland at the age of 83. He will be sorely

missed.

Our Music City Unit was well represented at this year’s Region 6 Rally in Picayune, MS.

Some of the members attending were Jeanie Tillman, Jim & Jenise Johnson,

Bobby & Frances Taylor, Fred & Connie Lieb, Hugh & Sue Chasteen, Bill & Susan Martin

and Mike Maurer. Past members of our unit, Gerry & Nancy Goffinet (now in Alabama)

also joined us.

The good folks at Foley Airstream brought six new Airstreams to the Rally for us to tour

(and yearn for!) And … they had a special Airstream cake made, which you can see didn’t

last long (see photo below).

Betty & Bill Lancaster, with the

Alabama Unit, provided entertain-

Nashville Music City Unit Americana

Music Caravan

The first Americana Music Caravan, conducted during the

first two weeks of October, covered music venues in

Nashville and Muscle Shoals Area. There were 6 rigs in

attendance from the Nashville group, and one unit from

Alabama. The group visited the “Back Stage at the

Ryman”, and enjoyed a visit to the historic RCA Studio A.

Studio A was opened to the public for the first time since

it was saved from developers last year. We got the

chance to meet Nashville dignitary and preservationist

Aubrey Preston and dog, who helped save the studio. On

Sunday, Bobby and Francis Taylor graciously invited the

group to their house for a cookout and bonfire. Then on

Monday, we visited historic Studio B and Country Hall of

Fame.

Hugh & Sue Chasteen invited us to spend the afternoon

and night at their farm near Ardmore (AL/TN) which was

right on the way to Florence and Muscle Shoals. We

toured their farm, played a bit with the horses then

cooked out and enjoyed the evening talking, laughing and

afterwards viewed the wonderful array of stars that were

so bright in the night sky. On Wednesday we traveled to

McFarland Park campground on the TN River in Florence

AL. Evening dinner at the 360 Grill. Thursday we visited

Ivy Green, Helen Keller's home, and the Rattle Snake Sa-

loon, built into a cave. Friday was the highlight of the

Muscle Shoals stop with the tour of FAME Studio and the

AL Music Hall of Fame and the Muscle Shoals Sound Stu-

dio, also known as 3614 Jackson Hwy. Saturday included

a visit to the Rosenbaum House - the only Frank Lloyd

Wright House in AL. Afterward we had lunch Bunyan’s

BBQ, a well known joint and met Bob Wray, a profes-

sional studio musician who has played electric bass on

many well known albums. He treated us to a visit at

the campground and shared some of his stories. That

night we went to Flobama, a downtown bar, and lis-

tened to local music. On Sunday we visited the JC

Handy Home and Museum. Handy is considered the

father of Blues music, and a Florence native. From

Florence, the group traveled to Picayune, MS for the

Region 6 Rally.

Here is an article on the International Rally:

2016 International Rally at Lewisburg, West Virginia

Considering attending? Registrations have already exceeded 500. Due to the overwhelming response in registrations

the club leadership is making plans to secure additional sites, so stay tuned for more information. You can still register

for the Lewisburg Rally online at wbcci.org or print and complete the registration form, then send it with your check to the

WBCCI Central Office. But do it soon. The Greenbrier Valley is a charming place to reunite with your Airstream friends

and enjoy an abundance of activities, both in and outside the Rally. You won't want to miss this one!

AMERICA'S SECRET AGENT-ERA PAST

Exposed in 1992 by the Washington Post, the Bunker at The Greenbrier Hotel was one of America's most closely guard-

ed Cold War secrets. The vast underground relocation center for the US Congress was in readiness from 1962-1992,

complete with House and Senate Chambers, dorms, power plant, clinic, cafeteria and even a decontamination ar-

ea. Step through the 18-ton blast door to learn its secrets and how it was kept hidden for more than 20 years.

FALCONRY LESSONS

Greenbrier Outfitters in Lewisburg specializes in falconry lessons, kayaking trips, mountain bike rentals and rides. 304-

THE GREENBRIER RIVER TRAIL

Seventy-eight miles of 1% grade trail winds along the longest free-flowing river in the East to waterfalls, picnic areas, a

flat-topped boulder - a local hangout for sunbathing and a refreshing river dip - tunnels, fishing, a you-pick berry farm,

wildlife and tremendous scenic beauty.

THE MOUNTAIN MUSIC TRAIL

Also known as the Seneca Trail, it connects music venues, festivals, musicians, radio stations, music groups and people

devoted to preserving and playing West Virginia's old-time music.

Do You Like “Off the Beaten Path” Places to Eat?

Well, you could be in a treat while in Mississippi and Louisiana. John T,

Edge, a James Beard Award Nominee, published a book, “Southern Belly”,

in 2000 that has different and unique places to eat in the southern states,

which luckily

include Mississippi and Louisiana. The section in Louisiana starts on page

127 and the Mississippi section starts on page 163. Within each state the

places are listed by region. Other states included in the book are Alabama,

Arkansas, North Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North & South Carolina,

Tennessee, East Texas, and Virginia.
