Nassau Bay is one of 20 Texas cities to earn a five-year certification from 2015 - 2020. The Scenic City Certification Program is a project of Scenic Texas and its statewide program partners. It is the first program of its kind in the United States to incorporate a comprehensive set of model standards for design and development of public roadways and public spaces into one program. Texas cities apply to the program for evaluation of existing standards against the Scenic City Model. In granting the city its certification, Scenic Texas took note of Nassau Bay’s strong on-premise sign ordinances and its efforts to protect its watershed, Lake Nassau, through erosion control projects. The erosion control projects also serve as additional habitat space for aquatic wildlife and plants. The Scenic City model reinforces the importance City Council and City Staff have placed on improving ordinances and investing in public spaces and infrastructure to improve Nassau Bay while maintaining our community’s unique character. CITY NEWS The Lake Nassau Dredging Project - Phase 1 will begin on August 3rd. Dredging the lake is vital to improving drainage in the city and maintaining appropriate water levels to support aquatic life. Phase 1 will include excavating approximately 1,900 cubic yards of lake bottom and placing it in the 1.8 acre section in the open field behind the park pavilion. This material will go through a drying process and eventually be used in the trail expansion project in the park. Phase 2 will dredge the inlet area of Lake Nassau and transport that material to the holes dug during Phase 1. FAQs: Can we still go to the park? Yes, just be careful and cautious around the excavator and dump trucks carrying material through the park. Is the excavated material dangerous for people/ pets? No, the excavated material and truck pathway will be blocked off with orange construction fencing during this time. For your safety, please stay out of these areas. How long will dredging take? Phase 1 should take approximately three weeks. Phase 2 will immediately follow and should take three more weeks. The entire dredging process should be complete mid-September. I still have questions, who do I call? Please call the Public Works Department at 281- 333-2944.

These are advanced technology solar lights that eventually will replace all current decorative street lights in the city. Most light locations will remain the same but some lights will be moved depending on the results of a lighting analysis that factors in direct sunlight availability and overall neighborhood lighting levels.

Contractors will be installing the lights and City Staff will be overseeing this project. Any questions about the installation process should be directed to Project Supervisor Scott Kline by calling the Public Works Department at 281-333-2944.

WATER HYACINTHYou may have noticed the recent growth of water hyacinth in the water around Nassau Bay. This plant typically thrives after heavy rains/flooding in the area and usually dies off as the water salinity returns to normal. Due to the amount of water hyacinth and length of stay this year, City Staff is working with Texas Parks & Wildlife to find the best solution to remove this plant and prevent regrowth without harming other aquatic life.
