MOVING FORWARD

he NW Chapter is proud to continue with the tried and true endeavors we have promoted

throughout the past number of years, but we are also looking at new ideas for the future.

In keeping with the traditional, the Chapter will present another season of technical lunches in both Edmonton and Calgary, which started in September, and will again continue until April next year. The Chapter is also hosting the Northwest Trenchless Conference again this year. This event is being held in Calgary on November 18 and 19 at the Coast Plaza Hotel. This will be the 19th annual year of this event and will include New Installation and Rehabilitation NASTT Short Courses on November 18, and presentations and the tradeshow on November 19. In conjunction with the Conference, the Chapter will

T

MESSAGE FROM THE NASTT-NW CHAIR

also be presenting the 2015 Northwest Trenchless Project of the Year, which best exemplifies the many outstanding trenchless projects that are constructed within our Chapter every year. I hope everyone has an opportunity to attend as many of these events as possible, and benefit from the knowledge and excellent networking opportunities that are made

available. Please check our website at www.nastt-nw.com for further information on these events.

For moving forward, the Chapter will incorporate a General Meeting presentation into the conference symposium this year, allowing us to update members on Chapter activities and resources. Municipal scholarship opportunities to attend the conference will once again be available. The Chapter is also taking steps, through a Membership Committee and coordination with NASTT, to promote membership though additional events being held throughout the year. Keep posted for further information on this initiative. Another initiative is the evaluation of our trenchless conference, and how it can be structured to better serve our membership and develop new members.

If we can find a good balance between tradition and change, then we will be able to maintain our strength from our previous successes as well as develop momentum from the excitement of new endeavors. As such, I look forward to any suggestions on how to improve our Chapter in this regard. If you have any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

MESSAGE FROM THE NASTT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

LOOKING AHEAD

his has been a year of record-breaking events here at NASTT! The 2015 No-Dig Show held in

Denver, Colorado was definitely a major highlight surpassing all of our goals and expectations. We hosted more than 2,400 attendees; presented a comprehensive technical program; and completely sold out our exhibit hall. None of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteer membership including your Northwest Chapter members.

Looking ahead to November, I am particularly excited to be able to join you once again at the upcoming 2015 Northwest Chapter Trenchless Conference in Calgary, Alberta. This will be the Chapter’s 19th annual conference! Under the leadership of the Chapter Chair, Alan Miller, this conference offers excellent

Tlearning and networking opportunities for trenchless industry professionals and includes several technical presentations covering a wide variety of trenchless topics and a trade show bringing you industry innovations in products and services.

Preceding the conference on November 18, the Chapter will offer NASTT’s Trenchless Technology Short Courses in New Installation and Rehabilitation taught by expert volunteer instructors Dr. Sam Ariaratnam of Arizona State University, Kevin Bainbridge of Robinson Consultants Inc., Dr. John Matthews of Pure Technologies, and Matthew Wallin of Bennett Trenchless Engineers. The New Installations session covers new construction techniques – microtunneling, HDD, pipe jacking, auger boring, and pipe ramming. The Rehabilitation session

provides an overview of the methods available to public works and sewer agencies to rehabilitate water and sewer systems with minimal or no excavation. Both sessions promise to be informative and valuable for newcomers as well as industry veterans.

Plans for NASTT’s 2016 No-Dig Show in Dallas, Texas March 20–24, are in full swing. The technical program will have many informative and innovative presentations. We have also expanded the roundtable discussions to include six expert panels bringing you lively and exciting discourse on all things trenchless. Of course, our exhibit hall will be full of new products and services to support the trenchless industry and is already close to selling out! We will also host our Good Practices training program, which includes seven different specialized full- and half-day courses. You definitely do not want to miss this show and please watch for further announcements.

As you may know, the Northwest Chapter is home to many trenchless advocates that serve on our 2016 Program Committee including Ali Bayat, David Krywiak, Jason Lueke, Jim Murphy, and Craig Vandaelle. They are sure to help bring you an excellent technical program in 2016.

Again, I cannot thank our Northwest Chapter volunteers and members enough for your dedication and support. Your Chapter consistently offers support and enthusiasm to our Society and we value you all as Trenchless Champions. I look forward to joining you in Calgary for the regional conference as well as seeing you in Dallas next spring.

is a major roadway in a dense residential area of Edmonton. Though it is a main feeder road, it also supports a newly developed subdivision on one side and a large condo complex on the other. The weakening of a fiberglass transmission main on Castle Downs Road meant a drop in water pressure for the many nearby residents that it supplied. Replacing the 451 m length of failing pipe by traditional methods would cause a lengthy, major disruption of a busy Edmonton thoroughfare. The solution? The installation of IPEX Fusible Brute PVC piping within the current fiberglass pipe.

The existing 600 mm fiberglass line was installed in 1972. EPCOR, Edmonton’s utility provider, calculated that, in 2014, a 600 mm transmission main wasn’t necessary, and that it could be downsized to 450 mm. This resizing gives contractors the option to pull a new line through the old one. Joe Feraco, Infrastructure Project Manager/Estimator with M.A.P. Water & Sewer Services Limited, explains, “As the city grows, hydraulic analyses are done, and areas no longer require the same diameter transmission mains as they did many years ago. Fusible PVC (FPVC) creates a jointless pipe, so it doesn’t need a lot of extra diameter to install it inside another pipe.

Feraco, whose company oversaw the project, has used FPVC in the past. “We’ve had great success with it, and it’s becoming more and more common.” Allan Baker, Regional Sales Manager for Northern Alberta, adds, “EPCOR were early adopters of the technology. Some of the first FPVC projects we did were for EPCOR.”

Feraco sees many advantages to using this technique. “There is a huge savings in road construction. You don’t have to tear up asphalt and concrete; hence, the project goes a lot quicker because there’s no excavation. The old pipe also forms an extra layer of

protection for the new line. When you’re trying to fit 12 months of work into six or seven months of decent weather, every day we can gain is a good day. This method of technology and construction is very efficient and allows us to do the work in less time.”

Baker describes part of the process to assemble the replacement transmission main. “Each piece of 450 mm pipe is 12.2 m long, and it took 39 fuses to create the length of pipe needed for this project. The company that did the fusing was Clean Harbors. Their technicians are trained and certified by IPEX.” Feraco adds, “We’ve used Clean Harbors in all our projects. The two companies work very well together, and we make a good team.” Before the pipe could be pulled through the existing main, Clean Harbors used a directional drilling rig to clean the original fiberglass pipe to ensure that it was clear of any debris that could harm the new FPVC pipe as it was pulled through.

During the fusing process, each joint is data logged. Baker explains, “For each fuse, records are made of fusion temperature, cooling time, fusion pressure and other information that is essential to track for quality assurance.”

The fuses don’t just have to withstand the pressure of the material flowing through them, but also the full weight of the pipe as it is threaded through the existing main. “Every fused joint has to withstand the stress of pulling that weight. In this project, the length of pipe weighed 64,020 pounds,” said Baker.

The assembly and fusion of this near half kilometer of pipe took four days. The daily weather temperatures affect the process and can sometimes slow it down if they are not favourable. If the pipe cools off too quickly, it can affect the integrity of the fuse.

Rather than having to dig up 450 m of road, the project required only two initial pits. Feraco explains, “We dug an entry pit at the point of entry where the pipe enters the casing and another at the opposite end for the directional drilling rig. The entry pit was dug with an appropriate slope so that the pipe didn’t get strained. The pipe is also cradled on

rollers so that it is not dragged along a surface that could damage it in any way.”

The pull rods from the directional drilling rig are threaded through the fiberglass pipe and connected to a pullhead that is attached securely to the leading end of the newly fused pipe with bolts. The pull rods are then attached to a clevis hanger on the pullhead and then they retract, pulling the newly fused pipe through the fiberglass casing. The process ran very smoothly. Baker said, “The actual pull lasted only 3.5 hours. They started at 9:00 am and were done by 12:30 pm.” This project was a

straight stretch of road, but the technology does allow for other options.

“PVC appears to be a pretty rigid pipe, but over a long length it flexes and bends to get around corners. There is an allowable bend radius on PVC, and we provide all of the technical information to our contractors,” said Baker.

After the new FPVC transmission main was in place, smaller pits needed to be dug for hydrants and to tie the main to two other lines. But even with these extra construction digs, projects using FPVC technology pulled through existing

pipe save both time and money. Feraco explains, “All and all there is a savings in road construction costs because this type of project avoids large open cuts that use a lot of workers and equipment. Resources and materials are saved when old materials don’t need to be disposed because they stay in the ground. The process probably shaves 30% to 40% of time off the project, too, and causes less disruption to the public.” Feraco adds, “The life span of this material is between 100 and 150 years, so I don’t think I’ll be replacing it in my career!”

The winners in this project were, finally, the nearby Edmonton residents. Said Baker, “After months of low water pressure, the residents now have their water pressure restored.” Baker acknowledges that the technology that allows them to fuse PVC pipe has helped IPEX compete. “Municipalities have standardized a lot of their water lines to PVC, so by using standard material that they’re used to, but in an innovative way, the process of promoting the product is easier. Municipalities already use PVC technology, and they are comfortable with it. If they need a repair or to make a change to our fusible pipe, the fittings they need are readily available. Our ability to fuse pipe over long lengths gives municipalities other options for solving their problems.” Contractors who see the benefits of working with fusible pipe are excellent advocates for IPEX products. IPEX has had a long-standing association with M.A.P. Water & Sewer services in the Edmonton area, dating back to their very beginnings. They do good work, are professional, and make good working partners. “Working with reputable and professional contractors like M.A.P. and Clean Harbors also makes the promotion of fusible PVC easier.”

Feraco likes working with IPEX. “We have a long-standing relationship with IPEX. We install IPEX products, and they have been tested to be very successful over the years. Al and his team really make things happen for us—even on short notice at times. They’re great if we have any questions, and product support is second to none. On the odd time that there is a problem, they don’t shy away from it and tackle it head on. I’ve had nothing but the greatest experience with IPEX, and they’re always on the cutting edge of technology as well. Fusible pipe is a prime example.”

M.A.P. and Clean Harbors have recently contracted to install another 2.4 kilometers of 450 mm DR 18 Fusible PVC for a local waterline serving a new industrial site just outside of Edmonton.

MM-T3-01 Assessing the Performance of 38 Years of CIPP Installations in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaMonday, March 21 – AM Sessions

By Christopher Macey, AECOM, Winnipeg, MB, and Armand Delaurier, City of Winnipeg, ManitobaChris Macey, P. Eng., is the North American Practice Leader for AECOM in North America for Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation of Underground Infrastructure. With more than 30 years of experience, Chris has considerable expertise in material failure assessment for pipelines in both gravity and pressure service.

A detailed assessment of long-term use of CIPP liners in service from 10 to 30 years. The City of Winnipeg, Manitoba has a sewer system that services approximately 700,000 people. It commenced sewer rehabilitation with cured in place pipe (CIPP) in its first trial installations in 1978, one of the earliest installations of CIPP in North America. A trial rehabilitation method initially, the program increased in frequency from

a project every couple of years in the 1980s to annual trials in the 1990s. By 1998, the annual Sewer Condition Upgrading Program was transformed and CIPP evolved from a trial rehabilitation technology to a competitively bid technology that encompasses approximately 75% of the annual rehabilitation program from 1998 to date.

Previous papers at No-Dig 2012 and 2013 presented the results of physical and visual inspections of the oldest CIPP installations dating back to 1978 and 1984. This paper reports on the much broader use of CIPP liners in the city, those installed from 1989 (the first year of ASTM F1216) through 2005. The modern Sewer Condition Assessment in Winnipeg has visually captured the condition of these liners after many years of service (ranging from 10 to 30 years). The long-term data base on initial testing results also has as-built physicals for the vast majority of installations from 1989 to date. The assessment of this broad a cross section of CIPP liners with known loading and initial installed conditions, provides unique insight into the adequacy of prevailing CIPP installation standard as well as realistic insight into the longevity of the product.

MA-T6-02 Preliminary Design Considerations to Slipline a 42-m Deep 2642-mm Trunk Sewer in Complex Soils in the Region of York, OntarioMonday, March 21 – AM Sessions

By Christopher Macey, AECOM, Winnipeg, MB; Adam Braun, AECOM; Allan White, AECOM; and Birju Shah, Region of York, OntarioChris Macey, P. Eng., is the North American Practice Leader for AECOM in North America for Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation of Underground Infrastructure. With more than 30 years of experience, Chris has extensive knowledge of pipeline materials, pipe/soil interaction, pipeline deterioration processes, material limit states, and innovative trenchless construction techniques.

This paper will discuss the complex slipling of a very deep sewer with innovative by-pass and installation methodology. This paper reviews the preliminary design considerations to rehabilitate the 16th Ave Trunk sewer by sliplining methods in the Region of York, Ontario, Canada. The 2642 mm (104") host pipe is a trunk sewer that was constructed using a traditional tunnel boring machine (TBM) in highly permeable soils with a corrugate steel plate primary and monolithic concrete secondary liner. The portion of the trunk sewer targeted for rehabilitation is approximately 42 m deep and located along 16th Ave, a busy thoroughfare in the City of Markham in the York Region. The trunk sewer is exposed to very high external groundwater pressure which

combined with the concrete cold joints in the secondary tunnel liner has resulted in high levels of groundwater infiltration and the risk of losing structural support through the migration of sounding soils.

Given the design objectives and installation constraints, rehabilitation of the trunk sewer using full Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes installed by sliplining methods was selected as it may be deployed from relatively small access shafts in live flow and completely independent of sewer depth. Concepts for deployment of the sliplining operations have included both single and multiple access shaft options with liner diameters ranging from 1950 to 2250 mm. Installation methods include both jacking in live flow versus hand installation using pipe trolleys. The ability to downsize the liner has facilitated the use of a unique in-pipe by-pass in the annulus between the host pipe and the liner.

TM2-T5-02 Bowness Sanitary Offload Trunk – Intelligent use of MTBM Construction Technology to Minimize Construction Footprint in a Mature Calgary Neighborhood with Complex SoilsTuesday, March 22 – AM Sessions (2nd Session)

By Christopher Macey, AECOM., Winnipeg, MB; Pat Ilasewich, AECOM; David Lagore, City of Calgary; and Marv McDonald, AECOMChris Macey, P. Eng., is the North American Practice Leader for AECOM in North America for Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation of Underground Infrastructure. With more than 30 years of experience, Chris has considerable expertise in trenchless technologies.

This paper will discuss intelligent use of MTBM construction technology to minimize construction footprint in a mature Calgary neighborhood with complex soils.

The Bowness Sanitary Offload Trunk is being constructed to provide sanitary sewer relief to Calgary’s northwest to accommodate wet weather flows and future growth. The relief concept involves construction of approximately 3.7 km of 1,650 mm sewer with a twin 900 mm siphon crossing of the Bow River. The project is located in the community of Bowness in northwest Calgary, which is a mix of dense mature residential and commercial land use. Subsurface conditions in the area are highly variable; mixed, complex soils units which, combined with the depth of the required relief sewer (8 to 10 m deep), make convention open-cut construction impractical.

The project also involves multiple critical infrastructure crossings including major road crossings, large diameter storm trunks and a large diameter feedermain, a vital piece in the City’s water delivery system.

Various trenchless construction methods were reviewed for feasibility, with the project ultimately being designed and constructed with an MTBM equipped with earth pressure balance technology. Successful implementation involved navigating through both congested right-of-ways and complex soil units with adequate ground loss control and spatial accuracy. The alignment required two curves in one drive to navigate a back lane, which allowed an alternate alignment to be employed, deferring approximately 1 km of trunk for 20 years. The MTBM minimized the construction footprint, limited disruption to area residents to acceptable levels and met all technical hydraulic relief objectives.
