Background

• In 2014 WorkCover NSW appointed PIEF to

develop and deliver their 1 day AHP training

program into a online, self-paced training

program

• The AHP Online Training Program is mandatory

for those allied health practitioners applying for

WorkCover approval

• The training program is mandatory for

chiropractors, physiotherapists, exercise

physiologists, psychologists and osteopaths and

costs $300.

The training course was established

to:

• Drive high quality evidence based treatment services that

optimise the social and health outcomes of injured workers

• Provide an understanding of the NSW workers compensation

system and who else may be involved in the workers recovery

at work

• Set expectations for allied health practitioners working within

the NSW workers compensation system, and

• Assist allied health practitioners with the practical

requirements for delivering services within the workers

compensation system; such as treatment planning, seeking

approval to deliver services and communicating with the

support team.

Overview of three modules

• Module 1 provides an overview of the workers

compensation legislation, reasonably necessary

treatment, discusses the importance of setting

expectations with workers regarding the health

benefits of work and describes the role of each

member of the worker’s support team

• Module 2 is on the Clinical Framework for the Delivery

of Health Services

• Module 3 provides information regarding the

procedures for working as an allied health practitioner

within the NSW workers compensation system and

information about completion of the allied health

recovery request; offering practical experience through

case studies.

Current progress

The online program launched in April 2015

and over 1,500 participants have

successfully completed modules 1 and 2

(module 3 will commence in early 2016)

An overall satisfaction rate of 87% was

achieved, which was high for a mandatory

program and that is chargeable and that

some participants encountered some

technical issues when completing

Some of positive feedback received

‘Great, love the online format - work around family and work commitments

much better. Thanks.’

‘Great training package. Very good.’

‘Thought the format was very good. With the asking of questions

throughout that were relevant to my profession. ‘

‘As a rural member better to do this online than have to travel away to

update.’

‘Overall well thought out lay out and key learning points covered’

‘I was unfamiliar with the WorkCover system so I learned a lot.’

‘I found these modules very helpful and feel as long as you go through each

topic you should have a competent understanding of NSW workcover and

its procedures. I enjoyed completing these modules.’

‘very informative, looking forward to module 3’

RTWSA (formerly WorkCoverSA) have engaged

PIEF to develop a similar training program for

Changes to the

PIM qualification

framework

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015

Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future

Nationally

Recognised Training

There have been Nationally

Recognised Training

qualifications in Personal

Injury Management for

approximately 10 years.

The qualifications continue to

grow and evolve.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015

Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future

Previous PIM qualifications

Prior to March 2015 there were five Personal Injury

Management National Recognised Qualifications:

• Certificate III in Personal Injury Management

(Claims Management)

• Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management

(Claims Management)

• Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management

(Underwriting)

• Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management

(Return to Work)

• Diploma of Personal Injury Management.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015

Current PIM qualifications

From March 2015 the number of qualifications

were reduced from five to three Nationally

Recognised Qualifications:

• Certificate III in Personal Injury

Management

• Certificate IV in Personal Injury

Management

• Diploma of Personal Injury Management.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015

Certificate IV

The Cert IV qualification was reduced from three

qualifications to one, however now includes three

streams to choose from:

• Claims Management

• Return to Work

• Underwriting

The benefits of this approach are that additional

streams can be added without justifying that a full

qualification is required and students do not have to

enrol in another qualification to upgrade their skills in

another area of Personal Injury Management.

Diploma

Like the Cert IV, the Diploma of Personal Injury

Management has also moved to a streaming model.

Cert IV qualification was reduced from three

qualifications to one, however now includes three

streams to choose from:

• Advanced Case Management

• Disability Insurance

• Workplace Injury Insurance Management

The benefits of this approach are that additional

streams can be added without justifying that a full

qualification is required and students do not have to

enrol in another qualification to upgrade their skills in

another area of Personal Injury Management.

Upcoming changes

Upcoming changes to the Personal Injury

Management qualifications include:

• A Medical Indemnity stream will be added to the

Certificate IV

• An Advance Return to Work Stream will be added

to the Diploma

The Diploma will be renamed to the Diploma of

Personal Injury and Disability Insurance Management

It is expected that these changes will be made

available from early 2016 onwards.
