August. Only a couple more months and the weather will be cooler and win-ter that much closer...=:-) This issue is focusing on the National Specialty. Results, and write ups on the event should adorn the pages of the NL. I was not able to attend this year, but from all accounts it was very successful. Kudos to the Quebec crew for putting on a great event!

Next year, in April 2012 the National shifts West again to British Columbia. Wishing the BC gang a great show. If your area is thinking of hosting a National event in the coming years, please get your application in to the Event Coordinator. The Sibyearian – The deadline has come and gone for submis-sions. Remember if you have sent in an ad and haven't yet sent payment to the Treasurer, the deadline is Oct 15. If you have paid already, thank you! I, for one, can't wait to see it in print! A reminder that membership dues for the 2011/2012 member-ship year are due! Get your renewals in! SHCC Archivist Position - Natalie Martin has decided to tender her resignation as the Club Archivist. E. Katie Gammill © TheDogPlace January 2009 - The Best of the Best or one that looks like the rest? Let’s be honest. Something called “preferred type” is flooding the rings today and in many breeds, it has little to do with the Breed Standard. When “current type” does not equal correctness, the best dog can lose because in many rings, the fatal flaw is being a stand-out.

A dog show friend, absent from the sport for several years, at-tended some local shows with me. Welcoming the opportunity to view dogs in general after her sabbatical, she became visually distressed. Her despair increased when a “less than average” class dog received BOB. The waning quality in her beautiful breed breaks her heart. She stated it would be wasted effort to show a dog correct to the standard today, as some judges feel compelled to award dogs conforming to the majority of the entries.

Observing other breeds, she remarks on the lack of neck, re-stricted front movement and the lack of rear follow through; we discuss “gay tails” and breed type variances. We watch faulty movement and see coats dragging the ground. Weak pasterns and sickle hocks complete the picture. She wonders what causes this to happen to functional dogs in such a short time. It seems the correct dogs have fallen victim to what one may refer to as the “Perfection of Mediocrity”.

Today, many breeders and owners turn to performance, choos-ing not to participate in a “crap shoot” where such variety in type confuses both judges and ringside. I make this statement at the expense of being tarred and feathered but increasingly, the best dog you’ll ever breed may be the hardest dog you will ever finish. It will be the “odd man out” and look different from the majority of dogs represented in the ring. Why? Some judges, insecure in a breed and therefore lacking courage, choose to walk “different” dogs rather than stick their neck out. Under-standable, but should those lacking confidence be passing judg-ment on another’s dog?

My old mentor said, “The pendulum of type swings to and fro, but those remaining true to the standard triumph in the end.” Those dedicated breeders have the knowledge to restore a breed to its initial form once it hits bottom.

Should a judge reward a dog to suggest it could possibly assist in correcting breed faults? NO! It is a breeder’s responsibility to incorporate such animals into their programs, regardless of success in the show ring. Judges are to judge to the written standard to the best of their ability, fairly and efficiently. They avoid awarding “drags of a breed” when possible but judges have little insight into the Pandora’s Box of breeding. A respected dog person of long standing approached me with this statement while at a seminar. “A judge CAN NOT GO WRONG by putting up winners conforming to the majority of

the type of dogs in the ring on a given day.” My response was “Surely not!” Well, I believe it now! After observing an all breed judge from ringside, I watched two outstanding indi-viduals “walk” because they looked different from the rest of the short neck, sickle hock, smaller than average dogs lacking side gait that toddled around the ring like fuzzy little carica-tures of the breed.

This strange “look alike” perspective takes over in many breed rings and not just among judges. Asking a breeder what their standard said about head planes, the response was: “What are parallel planes?” We discussed the occipital bone, short and medium muzzles, balanced heads, etc. Reading a standard and applying it can be two different things.

“The best dog you’ll ever breed

may be the hardest dog you ever

finish!”

Should we just BREED TO WIN

or should we

BREED TO THE STANDARD

and expect judges to judge to the Standard?

14

Judges should have the ability to articulate why one dog wins over another. So is that why they make terminology common among standards - to make it easier for judges? If anyone can describe a bulldog and an afghan using the same language, please step forward. Removing the “point system” from the old standards has had a negative affect. In a final decision between two comparable individuals, one has an idea where to hang their hat regarding prioritizing.

It is a "Judas Kiss" to any breed when a judge puts up a dog simply because it looks like the majority in the ring. It encour-ages people to breed to “winners” rather than to a breed stan-dard. In judge’s education, they address soundness but type takes priority. Educators assume that new applicants under-stand structure and corresponding movement. Type without soundness is as detrimental to a breed as soundness without type. A bad front and bad rear working in sequence produces “balance”. Do two wrongs make a right? The goal is “a balance between type and soundness”. A breed must be able to walk to the water bowl without falling over its own feet!

This brings us to the next question. Are not judges “protectors of the breed standards?” Judges education is NOT at fault. Per-haps the problem is what some judging applicants do NOT bring to the table! It is a privilege to pass judgment on a breed but one has the responsibility of understanding “Basic Dog 101”. The AKC’s required anatomy test neither assures someone’s knowledge nor is it any guarantee a judge has the ability to ana-lyze structure and movement.

Some breeder judges today send dogs with a handler giving lit-tle thought as to their quality or future effect on a breed. Shouldn’t breeder judges be especially careful to send correct dogs for public observation? Breeders have a responsibility to put out “the best of the best” rather than a dog that wins simply because it “looks like the rest.” By so doing, they are sending false signals to both ringside and new judges

When judges say, “This must be what the breeders want as the ring is flooded with this type” it is detrimental to any breed. It IS NOT about “what breeders want.” Breeders and judges have a responsibility to breed and judge to standard.

Should handlers show dogs for clients when they KNOW the dog or bitch is not a good representative of the breed? Breeders and exhibitors have a responsibility to promote only dogs that DO represent their breed standard and to sell as pets those who do not! A good handler should make every effort to finish a dog but they too are responsible and should be more selective regarding client dogs. Handlers who read the standard and who have the courage to turn down an inferior dog are to be admired. Advertisement does not always mean a dog represents “breed excellence”. Handlers do not always present “good dogs”.

Advertising carries some influence and if a judge selects win-ners on advertising alone, they do a disservice to the breed and it reflects on their ability as a judge.

“Priority judging” can be detrimental to breeds as Judges be-come caught up in selecting for individual virtues be it eye, ear set, feet, or coat color. That is why some specialty judges “put up pieces” rather than the whole package. Virtues are impor-tant, but a dog should “fill the eye”. A single virtue cannot take precedence over a plethora of faults! Priority judging ex-plains why many judges take so long to judge a class. Dismayed exhibitors approach me with serious concerns re-garding the direction of our sport. Time and effort is required to understand what makes a breed “breed specific”, and what constitutes “breed excellence”. There is no short cut. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. However, it should be a knowl-edgeable opinion. Personal preference only enters in when two dogs are equal according to the breed standard.

Another issue is “spot entering”. Granted, today people enter under specific judges where they feel there is a chance of win-ning. However, why on a four-day weekend, do we see one point on Thursday, a major on Friday, one point on Saturday, and a major on Sunday? Should not one support the person who supports them by entering all four days? If there is a ma-jor, don’t break it by not attending. Don’t bump up a bitch or dog to BOB without first asking the other exhibitors their pref-erence. Many people drive miles only to find someone failed to show up ringside or” bumped up” a new champion and broke the major. This co-operation is something we used to be able to count on. Today it is “iffy” at best. This is “sportsmanship”!

"Winning because of an exceptional breeding program takes the breed and

breeders toward breed excellence. That should be the goal yesterday, and today."

15

Watch dogs go around the ring. Some are structurally inefficient. Some shoulders do not open up, the dog reaches from the elbow. Ask yourself why one dog out-moves another. Go analyze short coated dogs. Take this knowledge to your own breed ring and “look beneath the coat”. Understand top lines, body shape, breed spe-cific movement and toy/moderate/ giant. Do some study and then some soul searching. Ringside observers and breed enthusiasts look on in dismay today, wondering where the functional dogs of the past have gone. Sadly, some faults are so prevalent today they are viewed as “virtues”. Requested to address this issue, I decided to take time to sit back and see the “big picture.” The “big picture” is upon us, folks, and it is not pretty! My reason to become a judge was the challenge to select the best of the best according to a written standard. I love dogs! I love SOUND dogs with BREED TYPE! Both virtues, believe it or not, can be present in the same animal! Through combined efforts and a willing-ness to call “a spade a spade”, our breeds WILL survive. Breeding for the sake of winning is a downhill slide. This alone assures the future of our breeds. Turning things around will take dedicated breeders and judges, critical handler selection, and educated exhibitors. Our sport deserves nothing less than the best of our intentions. ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS. Why do breeder judges “put dogs with handlers when they know the ani-mal does not represent breed excellence? Why do handlers accept such dogs knowing once they finish, they will be “petted out”? Are you kennel blind and do you breed to standard? Should breeders and newcomers read the standard prior to stud and bitch selection? When will more mentors open up to newcomers? And lastly, are “gas money” and “filler” dogs destroying our sport? Putting a breed back on track requires ETHICAL HANDLERS, DEDICATED BREEDERS, AN UNDERSTANDING OF BREED STANDARDS and KNOWL-EDGEABLE JUDGES WITH THE COURAGE TO MAKE RESPONSIBLE SELEC-TIONS. Being a judge is not for the faint of heart. Sending the best dog to the next level and being a part of its journey to the pinnacle of success is a thrill of a lifetime. There is but ONE standard. “Preferred breed type” is like a flavor of the month, very fleeting! BREEDERS, JUDGES AND EXHIBITORS HAVE A RE-SPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THEIR BREED STANDARDS. CURRENT FADS AND PERSONAL OPINIONS ARE FLEETING AND DESTRUCTIVE. 10121 http://www.thedogplace.org/ShowDog/Preferred-Type_Gammill-0901.asp Copyright © NetPlaces, Inc. / TheDogPlace - All Rights Reserved, Under penalty of law, no portions thereof may reproduced or reprinted without obtaining Reprint Permission from the publisher- Privacy Policy - Disclaimer

Kudos to this team! There work was well received. We all benefitted from their tremendous organization and work. When I arrived Friday evening at the arena, there were several areas roped off for Siberian folks to groom in. Of course I found those after I had all my stuff in the building and set up, right across the aisle from my set up. Duh! Once I found them though I happily pointed them out to those who arrived later. Let’s talk about the venue, easy to find, spacious, restaurants and hotels close by. This venue had it all. Mother Nature decided to cooperate right up until I was leaving the banquet with Don & Rosemary Hooker when it absolutely poured. We had sunshine and a nice breeze every day up to that point. The rain that came arrived after dark so didn’t interfere with any of the festivities. Hotels and restaurants in the immediate area were plentiful and easily accessible. Though a group of us did discover when we tried to meet for dinner, there were 2 Comfort Inns very close to the show. Who would have thought such a thing? Needless to say we never did connect for dinner that night as we were on two very different roads. The day of the specialty was lovely. The trophy table was loaded with goodies and so was the auction. Our chief ring steward, Diane Solman guarded the loot and managed to get us all in the ring on time. Tough job but she got it done. First up was George Cook to judge all the sweepstakes classes. George is a first class historian and presents an informative semi-nar about form and function. He is a long time sled dog driver that has participated in races such as The Yukon Quest. George had his hands full right from the get go. When he got to the baby puppy classes (3-6 months) what a delight. Despite their tender age these little guys trooped around the ring for the most part like pros. It was a pleasure to see the addition of this class. Let’s hope it will be allowed by the CKC in future events. For the regular classes at the specialty Ann Cook officiated. Ann has been a part of the Siberian Husky Club of America judge’s education process and of course is George’s partner in life and dogs. Many of the classes were large and Ann had her work cut out for her. Her hands were light and deliberate and her decisions were precisely made. This show had lots of special moments. We didn’t just have a 3 generation class for the dogs we had the pleasure of three genera-tions from Kortar, Grandma Carol, daughter Melissa and grandson Brayden. All participated and enjoyed the day. Young Brayden won his class in Juniors making both his mom and grandmother proud. Kathleen & Norbert Kanzler joined us at ring side to take in the show. It was too long a drive for Sue Bain to make on her own so her good friend Shelly (McHugh) Boumans did the driving and the two of them joined the crowd. To add to the pleasure of Siberian fans, the winner of the breed at the all breed show also won the group. Broker and his breeder, owner, handler Anne Palmer had quite the cheering section for BIS. I have to say it was such a pleasure to see so many Siberian people entered and they didn’t just enter, exhibit and leave they all hung out at ringside chatting and watching. All in all, it was a lovely Siberian day. Congratulations to the committee for a well run event and of course to all the lucky ducks that took home some of the prize loot. Kim Leblanc

The Siberian Husky Club of Canada Quebec Regional Specialty was held on Saturday May 28th, 2011 in conjunction with the Ho-chelaga Kennel Club shows. The location was the Dollard Civic Centre in Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal. There was an exceptional turnout of dogs coming from all over North America with the furthest competitor coming all the way from the State of Kentucky. These were by far some of the best show entry numbers that the Quebec region has ever seen! It certainly helped that the National Specialty would be held that very same weekend. The Sweeps/Unofficial Class judge was Melissa Coulman, Innisfree Siberians of Chateaugay, New York. The Official Class/ Altered Class judge was Heather Brennan, Nuthatch Siberians of Georgetown, Ontario. A light Pot Luck lunch was held in the grooming area throughout the day. The prizes for the winners were beautiful, and the Spe-cialty was graciously sponsored by Purina Pet Foods. All in all a great time was had by all. Big Congratulations to all the winners, as well as to the Quebec Region’s Show Committee on a job well done. Thank you so much for your hospitality! We will see you all next spring to do it all over again! Natalie Deschamps-Martin

Manon Parent QUEBEC

On behalf of the Quebec Region, I would like to thank every single person, child, exhibitor and Siberian that at-tended the National and Regional Specialties in May, 2011. It was a super weekend with a lot of dogs, many classes to watch and very, very nice trophies. The committee had a great time organizing and planning this event; I’d like to thank them, so a big round of applause for Don and Rosemary Hooker, Barb Collins, Eric Schweichler, Ray Smith, Trish Kanzler and Diane Solman. The Quebec Region held the National in 2001, now in

It’s time for the September report already and I can’t believe summer is almost over. We have had two shows in Saskatchewan. The first was Regina on the May long weekend; 4 days of showing. I did not get to that show. Group placements went to Ch Shisaido’s SandKist SailRunner who picked up another group 1st on the Friday, and Ch Shisaido’s SandKist SailSpeed who won Gr 4th on Sunday and Monday. The third weekend in July brought us to the Swift Current show, probably the favorite show of the year. At the exhibition grounds, camping, always hot and usually a storm goes though at some point. The show committee also hosts a great BBQ on the Saturday evening after BIS. On Friday, Ch Shisaido’s SandKist SailRunner won Gr 1st in both shows and BIS. Saturday, Ch Shisaido’s SandKist SailRunner won Gr 2nd then in the second show Ch Shisaido’s SandKist SetSail won Gr 3rd. Sunday, Ch Shisaido’s SandKist SailChaser won Gr 1st. Congratulations to Sandy and Mark!!!! I did not stay for the last day as I had puppies due on the Monday. I called home at 7:00 am Sunday morning to

find out she had just had the first one. So I packed up quickly and was home by 10:00, only to find out she had already had 5 puppies. The last two arrived after I got home. Seven puppies in all, 3 males and 4 fe-males, three black and white and 4 copper and white. It has been 6 years since my last litter and I am really enjoying them. The dam is doing wonderfully; she was out to visit and play with the others within 2 days of their arrival. Lisa Amos had a litter of 5 puppies born 5 days later, 2 males and 3 females, 1 black and white and 4 grey and white. We are both enjoying puppy breath right now. Reminder: Memberships are due!!!! Until Next Time...

Showtime & Racetrack - Jessica Scott ALBERTA

First of all, a HUGE Congratulations to all the winners at the National and Regional Specialties in Quebec back in May! I wish I could have been there to see it! Over the past few months, many different Siberians have continued to light up the show scene in Alberta! At the Grande Prairie show weekend, Marg Cox’s Ch Unicornhill’s Last Action Hero picked up a Group 4th, two Best Puppy in Groups and a Best Puppy in Show. He also picked up a Best Puppy in Show at the Northern Alberta Canine Asso-ciation show in Edmonton. At the Lakeland Kennel and Obedience show, Ch Ringkona’ s Turkey Piccata, owned by Trudy Babey and shown by her breeder Georgena Graham, finished her Canadian Championship and picked up two Best Puppy in Groups, a Best Puppy in Show and a Group 3rd. My girl Teslin, Ch Nanook’s Yukon Lady, picked up two Group 4ths the same weekend, shown by me! Ebonyshadow’s Siverfox Rock’n, owned by Candice and Cassidy Proctor, was awarded two Best Puppy in Groups at the Alberta Kennel Club Show at the world famous Spruce Meadows, beautifully presented by Cassidy. Rhonda Ovenden’s Ch Kimlan’s Skigal Sunshine Dlerium and Sandy Cairns and Mark Dakin’s BIS Ch Shisaido’s Sandkist SailRunner each picked up a Group 4th at the Edmonton Kennel Club Show. Congratulations go out to all these Group Placers, and a big thanks to the judges for recogniz-ing our breed! It has been wonderful to see so many different Siberians out in the show ring and being recog-nized! There have been some pretty awesome things happening in the Obedience and Rally Obedience rings for Siberi-ans lately too- make sure to check out Cheryl’s report for those results! Don’t forget that our Back to Back Boosters are coming up on October 21 and 22! They are taking place in con-junction with the Battle River Canine Association’s fall show weekend at the Camrose Regional Exhibition in Cam-rose, AB. We will have prizes for Best of Breed, Best of Opposite, Best of Winners, Winners Male, Winners Female

and Best Puppy, as well as for the highest scoring Siberian in Obedience and Rally-O on both days! We hope to have an area of reserved benching for Siberian exhibitors so we can all bench together and have a great time! This venue holds its Obedience events in an area that is separate from the Conformation, making it ideal for Obedience competitors. The premium list is out for this show weekend (check it out on CanuckDogs.com) and entries close September 28, 2011, so make sure you don’t miss out! If you wish to donate towards the Booster prizes or benching, please contact me at [email protected]. Hope to see you all there!

Well fall is finally here and soon the snow will fly-it’s the most wonderful time of the year for those of us who enjoy sledding with our SiberiansJ. There have been a lot of conformation happenings this summer, see Jess’s Alberta report and Debbi’s Saskatchewan report for results.

I am sooo excited to finally have other obedience news to report on!!! HUGE congrats go out to Jackie Wepruk

of Tucoldturain Siberians, who continues to amaze with her accomplishments in the conformation and obe-dience ring, as well as on the trail. Tucoldturain’s Triton RE SD has added OTCH to his name in fine style, earning his Utility Title in 3 straight trials! Their first time out this year, at the NACA show, he earned his first 2 legs, with a score of 196 , good for 2nd in class in his second leg. At the Evelyn Kenny show in Calgary in July, Triton earned the final leg of his title with a 3rd in class. He is Jackie and Rick’s first home bred Utility dog!!! At our submission deadline, Triton was ranked #1 obedience Siberian, and # 3 Working Group in Can-ada!!! He has also earned a Sled Dog title this spring! Not to be outdone by cousin Triton, Tucoldturain's Renegade CDX RN SD had to prove the girls can do it too!!! At our submission deadline, Renegade was ranked #2 obedience Siberian, and # 4 Working Group in Canada!!! She has earned the first leg of her Utility title this summer, as well as a Sled Dog title this spring. I am hoping to see their runs at our booster, held at Camrose the weekend of October 21st -23rd, 2011. Congrats again Jackie, Triton, and Renegade!

Flint and I have not done much showing this year…the EKC show held the weekend of August 6th was only our third show of 2011, and our first at an outdoor venue. I was unsure how things would go, since we had-n’t been in the ring since April…4 whole months, limited training time, and NEVER at an outdoor show, but my sweet red boy surprised me yet again and did wonderful, placing all 4 days, with a 2nd, a 3rd and 2- 4th place rosettes. We even earned our highest score yet with a 96 on Saturday-had a redo and lost 3 points when he anticipated a down, which totally shocked me since that has been the hardest thing for him to learn, and then only lost 1 point on the remainder of the course. Our final show of the year will be at Cam-rose on our booster weekend-come on out and cheer all the Siberians on!!!

Rally on!!!

Please consider adopting a rescue dog instead of supporting the greed and abusive practices of puppy mill operators. Check out all the adopt-able dogs across Canada at http://www.shccrescue.com/adoption2.html If you have lost a pet, please post it to this web-

site: http://www.canadastrays.com and let us

know and we will post it on our website. If any-

one is looking to place their dogs up for adoption

SHARP would be more than happy to list them

on our Up For Adoption page of our website.

We get a good flow of traffic to the site and I'm

asked frequently if any puppies or purebreds

need a home. All that is needed is a Bio on the

dog, contact info (where the dog is and how to

contact you) and a picture if possible.

S.H.A.R.P. Rescue Report

Things have been pretty quiet here at S.H.A.R.P. Our youngest dog is 10 now so I’m trying not to call him the baby anymore but I can’t help it. Our resident nut Cojo has de-cided he likes to be out in the front pen by himself and will not go out the back to visit the others. Needless to say he’ll be

13 in December so he can do whatever it is that pleases him. Our rescue SNOW has been battling Cancer and she developed another tumor; she has Mammary Carcinoma and is approximately 12 years old. I am not putting her through another operation because the S.H.A.R.P. budget just couldn’t survive it, so I am treating her with Transfer Factor (http://www.4life.com/) which can sometimes reduce the size of the tumor. I will keep you posted on that. I’ve gotten several donations of raw meat for the dogs which is a huge gift for us, one from a friend and the other from a local business that has offered me some. Pictures below are of the Moose carcass a local hunter gave us last fall. S.H.A.R.P. is still asking if anyone with web-page knowledge that might want to keep a province or two up to date let us know as we have been having a hard time keeping our dogs that are up for adoption current.
