Schuldt tallied 10 points on four goals and six assists in five

games, while leading the Huskies to a 5-0-0 start and a No. 2 national ranking. Despite playing on the blue line, Schuldt tied for the NCAA lead among all skaters in October

with 2.00 points per game, while also ranking sixth during the month with 1.20 assists per game. SCSU’s team captain tallied at least one point in all five games in October, including four multi-point games, while posting a +8 plus-minus, which led the NCAA. He scored the game-winning goal in SCSU’s first two games of the season, and was a two-time NCHC Defenseman of the Week to start the season, as well. Mismash registered three goals and four assists for seven points

in his first seven games, helping North Dakota to a 5-2-1 start this season. His seven points and three goals both tied for the NCHC rookie lead in October, while his 1.00

points per game and 0.43 goals per game were tops alone in the con-ference. His seven points tied for sixth nationally among rookies during the month as well, while his three markers tied for fourth among fresh-men. Mismash tallied a point in five of his final six games in October. The Nashville Predators draft pick also logged a +3 plus-minus during the month and fired 18 shots on goal. After being held pointless in his collegiate debut Oct. 6, Mismash notched his first collegiate point with an assist in a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence Oct. 13. He then tallied his first career goal the next night in a 6-1 win to complete the sweep, which earned him his first NCHC Rookie of the Week honors. The following weekend, Mismash dished out three assists in a split with Minnesota, with one on UND’s lone goal in a loss Oct. 20 and two Oct. 21 in a 4-0 win, including setting up the game-winner, for his first multi-point game. Mismash closed October with two goals in a 6-4 win at Colorado College on Oct. 28 for his first career multi-goal game. He also fired nine shots on goal and was named the game’s First Star en route to his second NCHC Rookie of the Week honors during the month.

On the flip side, North Dakota ranks second nationally on the penalty kill with a 95.8 percent success rate, going 46-of-48 a man down. (page 30)• NCHC goaltenders logged three shutouts last weekend, including two last Saturday. It was the first time two NCHC goalies recorded a shutout on the same night since Jan. 28, 2017. Eight different netminders from six NCHC teams have now combined to record nine shutouts this season. The eight goalies with a shutout this season tie Hockey East for the most from one conference, while the nine shutouts are second behind ECAC Hockey’s 10 whitewashes this season (from only five goalies). Minnesota Duluth sophomore Hunter Shepard is the lone NCHC goalie with two shutouts this year.• Minnesota Duluth senior forward and captain Karson Kuhlman has never missed a game in his NCAA career, playing in 134 consecutive games, which is the longest streak among active NCAA players. North Dakota senior forward and captain Austin Poganski has also played 134 career NCAA games, which ties Kuhlman for the most games played among active players.

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie

and Spencer Penrose Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. Denver won its first Penrose Cup last season, while North Dakota won back-to-back Penrose Cups in 2015 and 2016 after St. Cloud State won the inaugural season.

FRIDAY, NOV. 10

On the first full night of National Collegiate Hockey Confer-ence (NCHC) play this season, home teams went 3-1-0

Friday night with the lone road team to win being Omaha. The Mavericks won their conference opener, 5-3, at Colorado College behind a strong power play. In the biggest game of the night, No. 3/3 Denver saddled top-ranked St. Cloud State with its first loss of the season, 4-2, at Magness Arena. Sophomore Hunter Shepard recorded his second shutout of the season as No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth blanked No. 18/15 Western Michigan, 3-0, for its first NCHC win of the season. And in Grand Forks, junior Nick Jones scored twice to lead No. 2/4 North Dakota to a 4-1 over Miami.

In a match-up of top-3 heavyweights, defending national champion and No. 3/3 Denver outlasted top-ranked St. Cloud State, 4-2, Friday night at Magness Arena to hand the Hus-kies their first loss of the season. The Pioneers (5-2-2, 1-2-0 NCHC) received two goals each from sophomore forward Henrik Borgström and junior forward Jarid Lukosevicius to pick up their first win in NCHC play. Borgström opened the scoring in the first frame, while the Huskies (7-1-0, 2-1-0 NCHC) pulled even early in the second stanza. Lukosevicius then scored the next two goals, including the game-winner on the power play only 40 ticks into the third period. Borgström assisted on the game-win-ner and added an empty-netter to seal the win for a three-point night. Despite the loss, SCSU outshot the Pioneers, 34-29, but senior goalie Tanner Jaillet made 32 saves in the win.

In a top-20 clash, No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth earned its first NCHC win of the season, whitewashing No. 18/15 Western Michigan, 3-0, Friday at AMSOIL Arena. Junior forward Peter Krieger opened the scoring midway through the first frame, while senior forward Avery Peterson tacked on two goals in the third period. His first came less than a minute into the final frame and the second came on the power play midway through the period. Sophomore goaltender Hunter Shepard stopped all 22 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season, as UMD (5-4-2, 1-2-0 NCHC) outshot the Broncos (5-4-1, 2-1-0 NCHC), 38-22, in the win.

Behind a strong power play effort, Omaha overcame an early deficit to rally past Colorado College for a 5-3 in its conference opener Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena. The Mavericks (4-2-1, 1-0-0 NCHC) improved to 4-0 on Fridays while going 4-for-6 on the power play and outshooting the Tigers (6-5-0, 2-3-0 NCHC), 38-29. Senior forward David Pope scored two goals and had an assist for Omaha, while classmate Tyler Vesel chipped in a goal and an assist. The Mavs scored four goals in the second period, including three on the power play, with one each from Pope and Vesel, after CC grabbed a 2-0 lead. Junior forward Trey Bradley struck twice for the Tigers in the second stanza, his second making it 4-3 Omaha, but CC didn’t score again.

Behind a three-goal second period, No. 2/4 North Dakota topped Miami, 4-1, Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena. Junior forward Nick Jones scored twice for the Fighting Hawks (7-2-2, 2-1-0 NCHC), both in the middle stanza, while classmate Rhett Gardner tallied the game-winner in between Jones’ markers. Despite the loss, Miami (4-5-0, 1-2-0 NCHC) outshot UND, 28-

26, but freshman goalie Peter Thome made 27 saves to earn his second career win.

SATURDAY, NOV. 11

After home teams won three of four National Collegiate Hock-ey Conference (NCHC) games on Friday, two home teams

were victorious Saturday, while two teams pitched a shutout, one team earned a sweep, and the first shootout of the season in NCHC play took place. The only NCHC team to complete a sweep on the weekend was No. 3/3 Denver, which raced past No. 1/1 St. Cloud State, 5-1, at Magness Arena behind a strong power play effort. The only road team to win Saturday was No. 18/15 Western Michigan, which blanked No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth, 5-0, at AMSOIL Arena as sophomore goalie Ben Black-er returned the favor after UMD shut out WMU on Friday. Also logging a shutout Saturday was Colorado College, which held Omaha scoreless in a 4-0 win to salvage a split in Colorado Springs as sophomore goalie Alex Leclerc earned the whitewash. Miami used an extra-attacker goal late to tie No. 2/4 North Da-kota, 3-3, in Grand Forks and force the first 3-on-3 overtime in NCHC play this season as the game went to a shootout with the Fighting Hawks picking up the extra point in the standings for a five-point weekend.

Behind a strong power play and a big second period, No. 3/3 Denver completed a sweep of No. 1/1 St. Cloud State with a 5-1 win Saturday at Magness Arena. Senior defenseman Adam Plant scored two power play goals in the second period to help the Pioneers (6-2-2, 2-2-0 NCHC) grab a 3-0 lead, before SCSU freshman forward Kevin Fitzgerald put the Huskies (7-2-0, 2-2-0 NCHC) on the board. Junior forward Dylan Gambrell then added a power play goal and an assist in the third period to close out the 5-1 victory. Denver outshot SCSU, 42-23, including 33-10 over the final 40 minutes, while going 3-for-8 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. St. Cloud State is back in action next weekend hosting Colorado College, while the Pioneers re-main at home to host No. 2/4 North Dakota in a likely top-three series.

One night after being shut out, No. 18/15 Western Michigan returned the favor, blanking No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth, 5-0, Saturday at AMSOIL Arena, as the top-20 teams settled for a series split. After a scoreless first period, the Broncos (6-4-1, 3-1-0 NCHC) broke the game open with three second-period markers, including two in the first 2:07 of the stanza. Soph-omore defenseman Luke Bafia scored the first goal, which was the game-winner and the second goal of his career, while freshman forward Austin Rueschhoff also potted a goal and had an assist for a two-point night. WMU tacked on two more tallies in the final frame to close out the win. Sophomore goalie Ben Blacker made 31 saves to earn his fourth career shutout and first this season. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs (5-5-2, 1-3-0 NCHC) outshot the Broncos, 31-20, but went 0-for-6 on the power play. WMU returns home to host Omaha next weekend, while UMD heads to Oxford for two games at Miami.

Despite being heavily outshot, sophomore goaltender Alex Le-clerc did not allow a goal as he backstopped Colorado College to a 4-0 win over Omaha Saturday at the Broadmoor World Arena

and a weekend series split. Sophomore forward Nick Halloran opened the scoring for the Tigers (7-5-0, 3-3-0 NCHC) in the first period on the power play. He then set up a power play goal early in the second stanza for a two-point night and a two-goal lead. Junior forward Mason Bergh added a third-period goal and dished out two assists for a three-point outing. Leclerc totaled 41 saves to earn his first shutout of the season and third of his career, including 13 saves during a five-minute Omaha power play in the third period, as the Mavericks (4-3-1, 1-1-0 NCHC) outshot the Tigers, 41-22. CC hits the road next weekend for two games at No. 1/1 St. Cloud State, while Omaha remains away from home with two games at No. 18/15 Western Michi-gan.

In the first tie in conference play this season, No. 2/4 North Da-kota came away with the extra point in the standings, winning a shootout after playing Miami to a 3-3 overtime draw Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The RedHawks (4-5-1, 1-2-1-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the second period, but right after junior forward Ryan Siroky scored for Miami, sophomore defenseman Colton Poolman, who also had an assist Saturday, answered for UND (7-2-3, 2-1-1-1 NCHC) less than a minute later. The Fighting Hawks then pulled even in the first minute of the third period, before junior forward Shane Gersich gave UND its first lead at 3-2 with less than four minutes re-maining in regulation. However, Miami pulled goalie Ryan Larkin for an extra attacker and junior forward Josh Melnick tied the game with 1:24 to play in the third to force overtime and give him a two-point night. After neither team found the back of the net in 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 overtime, junior defenseman Christian Wolanin converted in the fourth round of the shootout to give UND a 1-0 shootout win and the extra standings point. The Fighting Hawks outshot Miami, 32-23, with Larkin making 29 saves in the tie. The RedHawks return home to host No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth next weekend, while North Dakota heads to Denver to tangle with the No. 3/3 Pioneers.
