The Indian mining sector has always been striving for achieving opmal extracon and ulisaon of mineral resources under the constraints of deeper-horizon of mine workings, lower-level of mechanizaon, smaller-scale of mines, stringent-provisions of safety and environmental regulaons, poor-planning of infrastructure, stressed-management of surface rights, etc. Moreover, as India has adopted the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of United Naon Organizaon, mining companies must determine their focus, develop strategies and align their systems and processes with the environment, social and economic aspects of SDGs. These goals can be realised only through scienfic, sustainable, producve and effecve mining pracces with due aenon to design, mechanisaon, safety and management aspects of mining.

The landscape of technological advancements and innovaons is changing with the fast pace in every walk of life including the mining acvies. Numerous advances are being noced worldwide in the domains of mine methods, mechanisaon, management & Safety to improve the capability, efficiency, effecveness and reliability of mining systems. The adopon and diffusion of these advancements will be the cornerstone for mining companies for negoang the issues of opmal extracon under exisng geomining constraints and staying compeve. Therefore, to keep abreast of these advances in mining, the industries, researchers, academics, policy makers and other stakeholders should come together to interact, share, and collaborate for making Indian mining industry world-class.

In view of the above, CSIR-Central Instute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR), Dhanbad; a premier R&D instute in the country, in associaon with the Instuon of Engineers, Dhanbad Chapter will be organising a Naonal Conference on “ADVANCES IN MINING” (AIM-2020) during 14-15 February 2020 at CSIR-CIMFR, Dhanbad. The conference aims to provide an effecve common plaorm for interacons and deliberaons amongst all stakeholders about the recent advances in mining, exchange ideas, address the core issues of mining for further advancement, promote the growth and sustainable development of mining industries. It will also provide an update about the recent advancements in the area of mining research and its applicaon.

Dhanbad is called the Mining capital of India because of its proximity to major coal and metal mining belts. Dhanbad is a well-known city in mining communies due its deep roots in the field of mining. Tata Steel Limited, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Steel Authority of India (SAIL) are some of the companies who operate coal mines in the district. The city is the Headquarters of Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) and the premier research instute CSIR-Central Instute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR). The engineering instutes like Indian Instute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, Birsa Instute of Technology (BIT), Sindri are located at Dhanbad.

Dhanbad is the second most populated city in the Indian state of Jharkhand. The city is well connected by rail network with rest of the country. Nearby airports are Durgapur, Kolkata, and Ranchi. Dhanbad has a very pleasant climate in the month of February when the maximum day temperature is around 20-22°C and nights cool down to 12-14°C.

Dhanbad: The Host City

CSIR-CIMFR, a constuent laboratory under the aegis of Council of Scienfic and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology (Govt. of India) New Delhi, strives to provide R&D inputs for the enre coal-energy chain encompassing exploraon, mining and ulizaon i.e. “Mine to Market”. CSIR-CIMFR is mandated to innovate safe and economically viable technologies, to make the best use of available knowledgebase and to transfer know-how in line with Naonal Missions. The laboratory also aempts to develop mineral based industries to reach the targeted producon for the country's growth and energy security. This instute has been assigned as a third-party evaluator for quality-assurance of thermal coal by the Ministry of Coal, thermal power units and coal companies. Since incepon, this instute is an important test-house to facilitate safety in mines by Ministry of Labour and Employment. It is located in the town of Dhanbad, known as Coal Capital of India, in Jharkhand state.

The Instuon of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest muldisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global plaorm from which to share the professional interest. IEI has membership strength of over 0.8 million. Established in 1920, with its headquarters at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata - 700020, IEI has served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of me it has been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering. In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every presgious and relevant organizaon across the globe. IEI funcons among professional engineers, academicians and research workers. It provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporng services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operang from 121 Centres located across the country. The Instuon has established R&D Centres at various locaons in the country and also provides grant-in-aid to its members to conduct research and development on engineering subjects.
