INTRODUCTION
V E N U E : D E P A R T M E N T O F C I V I L
ENGINEERING, AMU, ALIGARH
Infrastructure development is the backbone for the
development of a country. Geotechnical Engineers play
a key role in infrastructure projects. Geotechnical
Engineering is concerned with the design and
construction of foundations, slopes, retaining walls,
embankments, tunnels, levees, wharves, landfills,
marine & offshore structures and similar facilities. It
plays a key role in all civil engineering projects built on
or in the ground. Geotechnical Engineering is also vital
for the assessment of natural hazards such as
earthquakes, liquefaction, sinkholes, rock falls and
landslides. In recent years, our country has seen
tremendous growth in infrastructure projects related to
railways, highways, airways, ports, underground
tunnels, power plants etc.
The conference is aimed at bringing together
academicians, professional engineers, scientists,
executives from industries and government
organizations to interact and to exchange experience,
knowledge and views related to Geotechnical
Engineering and allied areas. Keynote lectures during
the conference will be delivered by technical experts
from IGS Delhi Chapter and other leading
organisations.
The Department of Civil Engineering came into
existence in the year 1942. It offers expertise in the
fields of Structural, Hydraulics, Environmental and
Geotechnical Engineering. The department has 38
qualified and dedicated faculty members with
specialization in various disciplines. The department
offers one undergraduate program, four post-graduate
programs (Structural Engineering, Hydraulic
Structures, Environmental Engineering and
Geotechnical Engineering) and research program
leading to Ph.D. degree. The department has been a
pioneer and leader in testing and consultancy works in
all fields of Civil Engineering.
Indian Geotechnical Society, Delhi Chapter was
established in 1982. It is affiliated to parent national
body, Indian Geotechnical Society. IGS Delhi Chapter
is very active in disseminating knowledge to industry
and academia. The Delhi Chapter is the largest Chapter
of Indian Geotechnical Society with the member
strength of over one thousand members. IGS Delhi
Chapter received two consecutive “Best Chapter
Awards” in 2014 and 2015 for remarkable contribution
in the field of geotechnical engineering.
