Message from the President

Welcome to the National Energy Efficiency Conference 2014.

The energy industry in Australia is undergoing a major transformation, with reduced electricity usage, soaring gas prices, changes in technology and shifting government policies. While these changes create significant challenges for energy users and energy service providers, they also provide an opportunity for new and innovative solutions that improve productivity and reduce costs.

Research by Vivid Economics has found that improving Australia’s energy efficiency by an additional 1 per cent a year would generate an extra $8 billion in GDP by 2020 and $26 billion by 2030. Whilst there is a very convincing case for greater uptake of efficiency, we are a long way from unlocking this potential.

The National Energy Efficiency Conference 2014 aims to explore the changing circumstances facing the sector, and the opportunities that it presents. It brings together leaders from Australia and overseas, providing an opportunity to think big about energy efficiency, to challenge assumptions about its potential, and to share ideas and innovation.

Your participation is appreciated and will ensure a successful conference. Please give others the opportunity to share your experience, concerns, ideas, and best practices. On behalf of the Energy Efficiency Council, I encourage you to help us make this a memorable event.

Rob Thomson, President, Energy Efficiency Council

Message from the Minister for the Environment

I’m delighted to welcome you to Sydney for the National Energy Efficiency Conference 2014.

The NSW Government has made energy efficiency a priority, because it empowers consumers, reduces households’ energy bills and improves the productivity of businesses. The NSW Government’s plan for the state, NSW 2021 includes targets to:

• realise annual energy savings of 16,000 gigawatt-hours by 2020• support 220,000 low income households to reduce energy use by up to 20% by 2014• deliver high standard building retrofit programs so 50% of NSW commercial floor space achieves a 4-star NABERS

energy and water rating by 2020.

To help achieve this, the NSW Government has developed an Energy Efficiency Action Plan. This plan details 30 actions to foster energy efficiency in homes, businesses and government operations. This plan includes two critical concepts – government must both lead by example and create a more open and competitive market for the delivery of energy efficiency services.

The NSW Government recognises that it needs to work closely with energy users and energy efficiency experts to achieve its goals, and we are delighted to continue our support for the Energy Efficiency Council’s national conference. We look forward to your insights and continued hard work in making Australia a more competitive and prosperous country.

To make the switch from a resource consumption mindset to a use-and-recover approach in today’s circular economy, Veolia provides customised waste-to-energy solutions that maximise the use of recovered and renewable materials that form carbon-neutral fuels such as biomass.

As a fossil fuel replacement for power, heat and steam generation, biomass sharply curtails carbon emissions and shelters users from the economic havoc of fluctuating oil and gas prices.
