Cover Plates 818, 814 and 828 are Aluminum Alloy 3003, H14 hardness.

Architectural Bronze Thresholds are Alloy CDA 385 (Copper Alloy No. C38500), Architectural Bronze.

Brass Cover Plate 818BR is Alloy CDA 260 (Copper Alloy No. C26000) cold formed Cartridge Brass.

Stainless Steel Thresholds and Cover Plates are Type 304; known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high tensile

Slip Resistant Finish

SIA (Slick It Ain’t) finish is our slip resistant textured surface, available on all thresholds up to 24” wide and on 818 alu-

minum and brass cover plate up to 10” wide.

Our SIA technology embeds bits of hot nickel and titanium into the surface of the threshold using a high pressure ther-

mo-electrostatic process. It was originally developed for use on aircraft carrier decks. SIA finish is very durable and will

not wear off.

This results in a slip resistant surface that is similar to high grit sandpaper.

Aluminum and Stainless Steel SIA finish thresholds are a pewter color.

Architectural Bronze SIA finish thresholds are a brass color.

Powder Coat Finish

Powder Coat finish is available on most thresholds upon request. Refer to page L2 for standard color options. Consult

factory for custom color matching.

General Information

Thresholds are furnished longer than ordered to allow for field sizing and fitting.

½” is added to thresholds under 61”; 1” is added to thresholds over 61”.

Special Drilling and Notching is available; details must be provided with the order.

Radiation shielding with .030” thick Lead is available on most thresholds. Specify “Lead Lined”.

Catalog Illustrations are full scale, except as noted.

Returned Closed Ends

Return Closed Ends (RCE’s) are available on most beveled thresholds.

The corner is miter cut on a 45 degree angle and returned to the face

of the door frame for a neat, clean, finished appearance. Specify: “RCE”

Custom Fabricated Thresholds

Our Custom Fab dept. specializes in producing custom made-to order thresholds to your specifications. Submit

your details to our technical dept. for a quotation and drawing for your approval. Components shown on pages

T-26, T-27 and T-46 are used to build special assemblies like the one illustrated below. Aluminum, Brass and

Stainless Steel Cover Plates are also custom formed and welded to meet special requirements.

Select the proper height edge components. Select the appropriate center plates to construct the width needed. Plates

may be butted together or ripped to make specific widths. Support joints and wider spans with bar supports.

Threshold assembly plates may be used fluted or smooth side up. Slip-resistant SIA finish can be applied to all parts.

Threshold assembly components may be ordered separately for field assembly or welded into one piece units in our

custom fabrication shop. They are supplied undrilled unless a template is provided. Ripping and beveling options are

available. All custom fabricated assemblies have a tolerance of +/- 1/16”.

Choose from various height and width components to build custom thresholds to meet special job requirements. See

the custom fabricated threshold example illustrated on page T5.

Select the proper height edge components. Select the appropriate center plates to construct the width needed. Plates

may be butted together or ripped to make specific widths. Support joints and wider spans with bar supports.

Threshold assembly plates may be used fluted or smooth side up. Slip-resistant SIA finish can be applied to all parts.

Threshold assembly components may be ordered separately for field assembly or welded into one piece units in our

custom fabrication shop. They are supplied undrilled unless a template is provided. Ripping and beveling options are

available. All custom fabricated assemblies have a tolerance of +/- 1/16”.

If a welded assembly is desired, specify “welded”.

Materials

Metal retainers for gasketing are Aluminum Alloy 6063, T5 temper, unless noted.

Architectural Bronze gasketing is Alloy CDA 385 (Copper Alloy No. C38500), Architectural Bronze.

Stainless steel gasketing is Type 304; known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high tensile strength and

resistance to oxidation.

NGP utilizes a variety of gasketing materials including Vinyl, Neoprene, Silicone, Nylon Brush, Thermo-

Plastic Elastomers (TPE), Polypropylene Pile, Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer (EPDM), Polyurethane,

and Intumescent Fire Seals. Product Illustrations indicate the Gasketing material. Properties of many pri-

mary gasket materials are listed on the perimeter seal catalog pages.

Adhesive mounted gasketing utilizes a pressure sensitive modified acrylic adhesive protected by a release

liner. Once installed it provides a permanent bond in exterior or interior locations. End use temperature

range is 0°F up to 190°F. Shelf life of adhesive prior to installation is one year when stored at 75°F and

50% relative humidity or less.

Acoustical Gasketing

The chart above indicates the STC rating of specially made acoustic doors using various applications of

gasketing. The first column is the rating of the door panel only; tested in a static inoperable condition to

determine the sound transmission through the door. The second column is the rating of the operable door

installed with hardware and gasketing which provides the STC rating of the door assembly.

STANDARD DOORS without special acoustic core - solid core wood doors with gasketing test to an

STC rating of approx. 28 to 30. Mineral core wood doors and Honey comb core hollow metal doors with

gasketing test to an STC rating of approx. 32 to 36. Without gasketing these doors have no sound control

and test to an STC rating between 15 and 20. To most effectively reduce sound transmission around the

perimeter and maximize the acoustic performance we recommend the following be used:

The International Building Code (IBC) requires swinging fire doors to be tested in accordance with NFPA 252

or UL10C, with the neutral pressure level established at 40 inches or less above the sill. This causes “positive

pressure” forces against the door assembly above 40 inches.

The result is hot gases and smoke leak out between the door and frame above this level, posing a serious

threat to life-safety; and on wood doors rapidly deteriorating the integrity of the door edges, requiring either a

built-in or supplemental “edge sealing system” to pass the test.

Fire door assemblies in corridors and smoke barrier walls are required to be smoke and draft control assem-

blies tested in accord with UL1784 allowing a maximum air leakage of 3 cubic feet per minute per square foot

of door opening at ambient temperature (75°F) and elevated temperature (400°F). These assemblies require the

letter “S” on the fire rating label of the door indicating compliance “when listed or labeled gasketing is also

installed.”

Fire doors are classified into category A or B based upon their construction and edge sealing system require-

ments. Fire-rated gasketing is classified as follows:

to gasketing installation. Two way tape is applied to the metal

housing insuring a quick and easy installation. Then for security, 3

tek-type self drilling screws are provided to further secure each

holes to drill.

Corrosion Resistant Sealer: A polymeric green seal (non-chrome) corrosion resistance extender isapplied under all NGP powder coat finishes. Laboratory salt spray tests prove a dramatic increase incorrosion resistance on steel products with this sealer applied to the metal prior to the powder coat fin-ish.

Salt Spray Test Results: Steel lite kits with NGP’s corrosion resistant sealer and powder coat finishwithstood 1,248 hours without failing. This is 2 1/2 times longer than the protection provided by powdercoating only.

Zinc Electro-Plating

Available on steel lite kits and louvers for extra corrosion resistance; recommended for exterior, wetareas, and coastal salt air locations. Zinc electro-plating will be applied prior to the powder coat finish.Specify on order “Zinc EL-Plate” and powder coat color desired.

Lite Kit Technical Information

Fire-Rated Lite Kits: Lite Kits installed in fire-rated doors require fire-rated glass and glazing tape.

Refer to pages L25-L28 for fire-rated glass and maximum sizes for fire-rated applications.

Impact Safety Rated Glass requirements: IBC requires all individual glazed areas in swinging

doors to be impact safety-rated to comply with the CPSC 16CFR 1201 Category I or II. Refer to

page L31 for detailed information regarding compliance on fire-rated doors.

Accessibility Standard Compliance:

ICC/ANSI A117.1-2003 Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, section

404.2.10 requires that the bottom of the glass panel in a vision lite is 43” maximum above the floor.

An exception for vision lites with the lowest part more than 66” above the floor are not required to

comply.

Louver Technical Information

Steel louvers over 46” wide and aluminum louvers over 36” wide must be furnished as two louver

cores mounted in one louver frame with a mullion in between. All Louvers over 64” or more in

height will be furnished as two louver cores mounted in one frame with a mullion in between.

national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings developed by the U. S.

Fire & Impact-Safety Rated Glass

Building Codes including the 2000 International Building Code (IBC) traditionally permitted wired glass

installed in fire doors, fire windows and view panels to comply with ANSI Standard Z97.1 - Safety Glazing

Materials Used in Buildings, rather than require compliance with the more stringent CPSC 16 CFR, Part

1201 - Safety Standard for Architectural Glazing Materials.

The 2003 edition IBC maintained the wired glass exemption from the CPSC 16CFR 1201 requirements

except for Education and Day Care use and occupancy classifications, effectively eliminating standard

non-safety rated wired glass from these types of facilities.

The 2006 edition IBC completely removed the wired glass exemption for all buildings; requiring all individ-

ual glazed areas in hazardous locations, specifically including doors and sidelights, to pass the test

requirements of CPSC 16 CFR 1201 and comply with category classification I or II.
