Future for National Historic Ships UK secured

DCMS, the National MaritimeMuseum (NMM) and NationalHistoric Ships, working in closepartnership with Northern Ireland,Scotland and Wales have agreednew Terms of Reference whichsecure the future of National HistoricShips (formerly an Advisory Non-Departmental Public Body).

National Historic Ships UK willcontinue to be an independentorganisation which gives objectiveadvice to UK governments and localauthorities; funding bodies, and thehistoric ships sector on all mattersrelating to historic vessels in the UK.

DCMS will remain the principalfunder, with National Historic Shipscontinuing to seek additionalfunding from appropriate sources insupport of its work.

The organisation will be anindependent body with conduit forDCMS funding, support services, and the means for reporting theactivities of the organisation toDCMS through the aegis of theNMM. Similar reportingarrangements will be agreed withNorthern Ireland, Scotland andWales.

The Advisory Committeeappointed to National Historic Shipsin 2006 will be replaced by aCouncil of Experts drawn from theDevolved Administrations andorganisations working throughoutthe UK in the historic ships andheritage sectors.

In recognition of its role acrossthe home nations, and its growinginternational profile the organisationswill adopt the expanded titleNational Historic Ships UK.

John Penrose, DCMS Minister forTourism and Heritage said:“Following the DCMS review ofpublic bodies, I am pleased toannounce the new governancestructure for National Historic Ships.I am confident that the newarrangements, and the partnershipwith the National Maritime Museum, will enable this importantorganisation to continue to offerobjective and strategic advice abouthistoric vessels to the UKGovernments and funding bodies.”

Martyn Heighton, Director,National Historic Ships UK:“I am delighted with this outcome, which recognises the value of the

work we do, the importance of ourstatus as an independent body, andthe constructive partnerships wehave with the UK governments andthe National Maritime Museum. Thenew arrangements build on thecommitment and hard work of theformer Advisory Committee, whichlaid firm foundations for futuresuccess.”

Kevin Fewster, Director, NationalMaritime Museum:“The National Maritime Museum ispleased to continue both our strongrelationship with National HistoricShips UK and our commitment topreserving and sustaining our islandnations’ historic vessels”.

A review of the work we’veundertaken over the past five yearsfrom 2006 will be published in thenew year along with a forward lookat what we will be doing up to2014/5.

HMS is airbrushed from London 2012 poster just days beforeRemembrance Sunday

The Daily Mail has reported thenews story that HMS Belfast -veteran of the Second World WarArctic Convoys, D-Day Landings, post Second World War service inthe Far East, and the largest vesselin the UK’s National Historic Fleet -has been airbrushed from a London2012 poster featuring an aerial viewof London. The posters weredesigned to promote the London2012 Festival and have now beenremoved after Olympic organisersLOCOG apologised for theirmistake.

Martyn Heighton, Director ofNational Historic Ships UK said: “It isan astonishing thing to do and is aninteresting reflection on how the2012 Festival organisers view amajor heritage asset such as HMSBelfast. It shows a startling lack ofunderstanding of the ship’s history, war record and cultural presence inthe capital. It would be unthinkableto airbrush the Houses of Parliamentor the London Eye from images ofLondon as design inconveniences, and in this case the graphics shouldhave been worked around the ship.

“I am also disappointed thatearly representations made byNational Historic Ships to theOlympic organisers regarding theuse of historic vessels both inLondon and nationwide as apowerful component in the culturalcelebrations were not taken up andthat a real opportunity to use ourunique maritime heritage in excitingand innovative ways in support ofthe Cultural Olympiad plans is beinglost.”

Some 350 people were gathered atthe National Maritime MuseumCornwall on Saturday 1st Octoberfor a private ceremony to mark the100th birthday of pilot cutter KindlyLight- re-launched after a meticulous18-year long extensive restoration, funded and masterminded by ownerMalcolm Mckeand.

Rev. Chris Courtauld led the as-sembled crowd in a rededication ofthe vessel and a rendition of thehymn 'Lead Kindly Light, amidth'encircling gloom', following whichKindly Light was officially re-namedby the daughter of boatbuilder DavidWalkey. In a remarkable turn ofevents, professional Barry seamanJohn Hart then produced the originalcoin from Kindly Light's mast-stepwhich he had removed for safekeep-ing following the vessel's last sailwhen her mast was lifted on entry toCardiff Museum. John presented thecoin, dated 1854, to Kindly Light'sowner and it was later found that this

was the birth date of the vessel'sdesigner, William Stoba.

All present at the ceremony weregiven the opportunity to go on boardKindly Light in groups and view thehigh level of authenticity which hasbeen achieved with maximum carein the restoration. She has been re-turned as closely to her originalspecification as research would al-low, complete with her build paintscheme (as depicted in a photo fromher launch day), origi-nal accommodationlayout, pilot cutterdeck fittings and noengine installed. Therewas also an illustratedtalk on her history andthe restoration whichwas held in the Lec-ture Theatre.

All those invited tothe ceremony hadbeen keen supporters

of the restoration, or had some con-nection to the vessel and her history.Amongst the guests was a descend-ant of Kindly Light's pilot, Lewis Al-exander, as well as members of theEllis family - whose father, Chris Ellis, had founded the Ocean Youth Clubwith Kindly Light in 1960. KindlyLight will be kept on the River Falthis winter whilst the remainder ofher rig is fitted.

SS responds to SOS fromfellow Scottish SteamshipThe historic Steamship and NationalHistoric Fleet vessel, Sir WalterScott, will this month come to the aidof another icon of Clyde'sshipbuilding heritage - the SSShieldhall.

On Saturday 29 October, proceedsfrom sailings aboard the Sir WalterScott at Loch Katrine in theTrossachs went towards funds torestore the Shieldhall which, after along career in the service of theGlasgow Corporation, is now beinglovingly restored by the SolentSteam Packet Company, who areraising funds to preserve her forgenerations to come.

Built by Lobnitz & Co in Renfrew in1954, the Steamship Shieldhall wasfor many years a familiar sight forClydesiders, as she plied the rivertransporting the city's waste out tosea whilst, during the summermonths, carryingpassengers and daytrippers.Graham Ellis,Trustee of theSteamship SirWalter Scott Trust, explains: "The SSShieldhall is aniconic part of theClyde's steamheritage and, asNorthern Europe'slargest workingsteamship, she is of

national and international importancetoo. However, as with all historicvessels, preservation and restorationis a very expensive business andwhilst much has been done to savethe Shieldhall, her future is very

much in jeopardy.

We have faced similarchallenges here at thesteamship Sir WalterScott and appreciate theefforts, funds andexpertise required torestore and maintainthese beautifulsteamships and ensurethat the importantchapter of steam in our

rich industrial history is bothremembered and celebrated. TheSir Walter Scott has been veryfortunate to receive the support ofthe Scottish Government and otherbodies, enabling her to continuesailing on Loch Katrine. However, there are many other historicallyimportant vessels out there whichdesperately need assistance toliterally keep themselves afloat andso we are delighted to support theSolent Steam Packet Company'sefforts, particularly as both of ourvessels share a link to Glasgow andher water supply history."

Just after midday on Sunday 21stAugust Maybird crossed the finishline of the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race. She had been at sea for 8 days and39 minutes and was the oldest yachtto complete the course. She wasbuilt by Jack Tyrrell at Arklow,Ireland in 1937 and was designedby Fred Shepherd. Maybird wasaccepted on to the National Registerof Historic Vessels in 2010 followingher restoration. With a crew of eight split into twowatches of four Maybirdencountered a wide range ofweather conditions from flat calms toF7 winds. This was Maybird’s first attemptat the Fastnet Race-howeverAideen, another Tyrrell/Shepherdcollaboration built in Arklow in 1935along very similar lines, did competein the 1947 Fastnet Race. And so itwas that 64 years to the day laterAideen’s younger sister Maybirdretraced her track to the FastnetRock and back.
