PGR PROGRAM OF TURKEY

1963 The program started with aggrement between UN/FAO and GOT

1964 at Crop Research and Introduction Center (CRIC=AARI), ex situ conservation started

1976 NPGRRP established

1979 Projects started to conduct

1991 NPGRRP reorganised

1992 Convencion of Bio-divercity (CBD) signed, National PGR Regulation published

1993 In situ Conservation of wild plants applied

1998 National Plan for In situ Conservation prepared and CBD ratified

1999 In situ (on farm) Conservation of landraces project started

2002 National PGR Regulation started to revise

National Information System of PGR

• The Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) is National Coordination Centre for National Plant Genetic Resources Research Project (NPGRRP).

• AARI has national responsibility on coordination and undertaken collection, conservation, characterization/evaluation, multiplication/regeneration and documentation of plant genetic resources of Turkey.

• In Turkey, a national and advanced PGR documentation system exists. Standard descriptors for passport data are used by all national institutions.

• In general, all data on plant genetic resources are in compliance with the international standards such as the “Multi-Crop Passport Descriptors (MCPD), and also EURISCO descriptors (European Internet Search Catalogue).

The project was conducted between 1993 and 1998 jointly

by

The Ministry of the Environment

The Ministry of the Food Agriculture and Animal

The Ministry of Forestry with GEF/World Bank grant

support.

IN SITU CONSERVATION

The aim of project was the in-situ protection :

Wild crop relatives

Wild cereals

Wild legumes

Woody species

Wild fruit species

Forest tree species

Land races (on farm)

Endemic species under thereat

Ecosystem conservation and management

IN SITU CONSERVATION

The project undertook five main activities:

site survey and inventories

designation of Genetic Reserves

data management (GIS data management and

monitoring system)

development of national plan for in situ

conservation of plant genetic diversity

development of institutional capasity within

and between relevant ministries.

IN SITU CONSERVATION

IN SITU CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES

Survey and inventory

Ecosystem based survey to determine suitable habitats

Species specific inventory to describe species abundance, distributions

Some collections for ex situ preservation

GMZs and management

Identification/Selection GMZ

Represents: Ecogeographical ranges or environmental heterogeneity of target species

Set up strategies for the management of GMZs

Public awareness

TARGET AREAS FOR IN SITU – On farm CONSERVATION

Tree sites were selected on state –owned land

Southeast Anatolia: Ceylanpınar State Farm(wild wheat,

barley, lentil and chickpea germplasm

Northwestern Aegean Region: Kazdağ National Park

(fruit, progenitor, nut, ornemental and forest species)

Central Southern Anatolia: the Anatolian Diagonal

(Amonos, Bolkar and Aladağ mountains which line at the

extrame geographical limits of several species)

IN SITU CONSERVATION

wild crop

relatives

and

wild fruits

IN SITU CONSERVATION

• Turkey actively promotes in situ/on-farm

conservation of agrobiodiversity as well as various

protection activities of nature.

Land races (on farm)

• The main objective is to support in situ on-

farm conservation of LR within traditional

farming systems.
