The NI ReputationA brand, in its simplest form, is a promise of consistency. It comprises two core components: identity and reputation. Our identity is documented in the pages of this style guide; our reputation is summarized below.

Who we are—trusted adviser How we act—visionary, innovative, responsive, and approachable

The definition of a corporate reputation is what a company is known for. The implication is that it is not about how the company views itself but how others view the company. The NI reputation is that of a trusted adviser to engineers and scientists. We live up to this reputation by having a visionary graphical system design approach to the marketplace through

innovative software and hardware products. We are also known for being approachable and responsive in all of our personal interactions, both internally with our peers and externally with our key stakeholders: customers, employees, suppliers, and shareholders.

Who Owns the NI Brand?I do. You do. Our customers do. We must embody the NI brand in words and in actions—in everything we do every day. Because the brand is the most visible extension of NI, every communication our company makes either strengthens or weakens it. Building a consistent and cohesive global brand grows our market share and strengthens the appeal of our products and services.

What Is a Brand and Who “Owns” It?

The 5 Metrics of a Strong Brand The brand—as idea, promise, and experience— must fulfill five standards:

1. It must be relevant—It must address a real or projected need in the marketplace.

2. It must be deliverable—The company must have the infrastructure, assets, and intellectual capital to fulfill the promise and deliver value.

3. It must be credible—The company behind the promise must be perceived as capable of delivering it.

4. It must be differentiating—It must possess some quality that distinguishes it from all other competitively relevant brands.

5. It must be both inspired and inspiring—It must motivate interest, action, and enthusiasm among associates, shareholders, customers, suppliers, and partners.

The following guidelines and suggestions can help you send the right message and create the right tone to best communicate brand promise. Getting the message and tone right will be the measure between the success and failure of each communication.

Audiences must understand the benefits—the points of differentiation – that come from working with the competition. Above all, you should strive to use the points of differentiation that uniquely position your brand in the hearts and minds of customers, partners, and other key stakeholders.

Be impactful. Create or find arresting images to capture the readers’ attention immediately by working with a designer or using stock image photography sites.

Be confident. Quietly. The message should be understated and subtle, not boastful. The voice is one of partner, not seller. This is not about making claims.

Be understated. The dramatic understatement of underpromising and overdelivering is the tone to strive for.

Be clean and crisp. Use elegant and simple but effective communication. Visually and verbally, less is more.

Be conversational. The message should speak with people, not talk at them.

Be respectful and nonpromotional. Engage the reader by speaking in a common language. No chest beating or competitor bashing. Avoid jargon.

Be benefit-focused. How does this product or service enhance people’s lives? Talk about the benefit.

Be global. Do not use metaphors or sports analogies. Consider translations and image selection with a worldview in mind.

Be sensitive. Not all cultures share the same values. For example, subtle humor is a wonderful tool to use, but humor “here” isn’t necessarily humor “there.” Also consider facial expressions and body language in the images you select.

Be sure. Test the visual and verbal content with the audience to be sure that you are communicating what you want to communicate.

Compatible With LabVIEW Logo Usage Guidelines

Aspect Ratio The original aspect ratio (height-to-width ratio) of the Compatible with LabVIEW logo must be preserved and must not be distorted in any way. When resizing, you must take care to lock the aspect ratio so that the type is neither condensed nor extended. Depending on the program you are using, instructions for locking the aspect ratio will be unique to that program.

File Formats You should maintain the file format in which the Compatible with LabVIEW logo was originally provided to you. For example, a JPEG file must remain a JPEG file.

Compatible With LabVIEW Elements The Compatible with LabVIEW logo should never be taken apart and recombined in any way to create new artwork. The logo text may not be altered or translated into any other language. No part of the logo may be changed or resized in any way relative to the rest of the logo.

Minimum Size Take care to maintain the integrity of all elements of the Compatible with LabVIEW logo. For example, the type and any trademark notations must be readable; in no case should the logo appear at such a small size that these conditions are not met. The minimum acceptable size for any NI logo is 1.5 in. (38.1 mm).

Use Cases for Product Images on the LabVIEW Tools Network

A product image is a photograph or diagram that depicts an offering, and they are the preferred visual way to differentiate your product on the LabVIEW Tools Network. The image should visually describe the purpose of a product and be visible in a small form factor. Where appropriate, the image should support the brand of the product and/or provider. All parts of the image should be clear and understandable. Here are some examples.

Use Cases for Logos on the LabVIEW Tools Network

■ Logos should only be on white backgrounds. If a color background is absolutely necessary, try using a background color in the template.

■ Color must bleed all the way to the edge. Avoid composite images; only provide company logos.

■ Avoid using radial or gradients, especially gradients that transition from color to black. We prefer a linear gradient from light on top that transitions to the same, darker color on bottom.

Correct

A logo is a graphic mark or emblem commonly used by commercial enterprises, organizations, and even individuals to aid and promote instant public recognition. Logos are either purely graphic (symbols/icons) or are composed of the name of the organization. With permission, NI uses third-party company or product logos in comarketing opportunities.

We have registered our mark through the US Patent and Trademark Office for its precise, consistent visual appearance. Any change to a trademark could result in NI losing the rights to use this mark globally. The NI brand is our most valuable corporate asset, with a total US dollar value of over $3.5 billion. It would be a big loss to the company if we lost rights to this mark. Please use it as it is here. Do not alter it in any way, shape, or form.

Respect and protect the NI and LabVIEW logos.

Do Not ■ Use anything but the approved

and provided logo

■ Attempt to create your own NI or LabVIEW logo

■ Reproduce the logo in other colors

■ Stretch or alter the logo’s proportions

■ Enlarge or reduce the artwork beyond the next size provided

■ Attach anything to the logo

■ Use part of the logo; it is an integral unit, so always keep it whole

■ Use the logo as text

■ Alter the orientation of the logo

■ Use the logo in a crowded space

■ Print on top of the logo

■ Use the logo as a watermark

■ Do not use the name “LabVIEW,” “VIEW,” or “NI” in any product names

NI owns a vast collection of text and images, including diagrams, photos, and illustrations. Partners often want to use images and other materials from our manuals, website, and marketing materials. Though we want to accommodate these requests, we must ensure that these images are properly used as prescribed and protected by federal copyright statutes and common law copyright.

Contact [email protected] to assist you in receiving proper authorization by supplying the following information:

1. Please identify the specific NI materials that you wish to use.

2. Specify how you will use such NI materials, the planned usage dates, and, if applicable, the book, document, or other publication in which these NI materials will be published. (Please indicate if you only intend to use NI materials for the purpose of defining National Instruments or NI products in requests for proposals or quotes. Third parties may NOT use, distribute, or otherwise reproduce the NI images in any electronic media or transmission unless written permission has been obtained from NI.)

3. Attach a copy of the pages from the publication, indicate links to electronic pages, or describe the electronic format in which you wish to include the images relevant to your request.

After evaluating your request, if we are satisfied with the proposed use of our materials, NI will send you a Permission to Use letter granting limited permission to use the NI materials as specified in the request, and the guidelines for using such materials. If we authorize the use of NI materials, we will also require an attribution or credit line. This entire process can take between 24 hours and two weeks, depending on the complexity and type of material being requested. If you submit answers to the above questions with your request, it shortens the processing time. Keep in mind, if you need multiple images from multiple documents, it may increase the processing time.

Images with incorrect appearance settings or blurred text will be sent back to you for recapturing. To prepare your computer to capture screens, complete the following steps:

1. Open your Control Panel and select Appearance and Personalization.

2. From the Personalization section, select Change the theme.

3. Select the Aero Theme Windows 7.

Be sure to follow each step carefully. Incorrect screens will be sent back for recapturing. To achieve the highest degree of image quality, use the following Windows 7 appearance settings when creating software screens. Then follow the steps below to capture each screen. Be sure to save the VI for LabVIEW screens and keep in mind that though product images are required for the LabVIEW Tools Network online listing, screens are useful in supporting technical and help documentation for your product.

12. Click the Next button five times until you get to the final screen and then click Finish. By turning off ClearType, the text is changed from color to grayscale. The grayscale font is more legible for printing and for enlarging screens when used on large format graphics, such as trade show panels. Some windows in Windows 7 and in applications have black-only text with ClearType off, which is how previous versions of Windows OS displayed text without ClearType. Black-only text is preferred for printing.

13. Use the back button to go back to the Appearance and Personalization window.

14. From the Display section, select Adjust Screen Resolution.

15. Set the resolution of your monitor to 1280 x 1024. If that resolution is not available, select 1440 x 900.

Screen Capture Process

Complete the following steps for each screen:

1. Run your application and set up the windows that need to be captured. Make sure all appropriate data is displayed on the screen before capture. What you see on the screen is exactly what will be captured.

2. For each window, enlarge it to fill the monitor top to bottom and left to right, excluding pop-ups, dialog boxes, and other windows that cannot be enlarged. Do NOT maximize the window because it clips the corners and edges of the screen capture. Instead, drag each edge of the window nearly to the edge of your monitor. Enlarging the window obtains screen captures with similar size ratios for more visual consistency.

3. In the Start menu, open the Snipping Tool in All Programs»Accessories.

4. In the Snipping Tool window, select New»Window Snip.

5. Click on the window you want to capture. The Snipping Tool highlights the window red, captures the screen, and opens it in the Snipping Tool.

6. Select File»Save As, name the file with a short descriptive name, and save it as a PNG.

7. Send the screen(s) to the LabVIEW Tools Network team at [email protected] for processing.

8. For LabVIEW screens, be sure to save the VI in case the screen must be re-created.

Note: Do not import the screen into any other application such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.
