NATIONAL KELPIE FIELD TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP TASMANIA from WKC “News Bulletin”, December 2009 No 538 The Fortieth NKFTC was hosted very successfully at Westbury between 12 & 14 of November th th by the Pyengana Sheepdog Club committee. The Showground proved to be a very good venue and spectators appreciated having a grandstand where they could sit in comfort to watch the dogs working and were particularly grateful for its shelter during a heavy shower on the first day. A total of over 60 dogs competed representing NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. and they were thoroughly tested by a very even lot of young sheep who consistently tried to avoid being drafted which meant that the yard work section took more time than estimated with the result that a big percentage of workers failed to complete the course in the allocated 15 minutes. The fastest time was 12.30 seconds by Matthew Johnson of Tasmania with Halsteds Johnny. This years event was won by Kevin Howell, working Karana Abba ll- an attractive black and tan rising 4 year old dog sired by Boanong Buster (Milburn Basil x Coleslea Sandy) x Karana Sap ll (Karana Scud x K Vicki) who was top scorer into the final on 82 points 14 points greater than the next best score. In the final Abba put us another good run to top score with a 75. Jim Luce finished second with Coopendale Tim ll 042895 a 7 year old black and tan dog bred by G Cooper of Bethungra sired by Capree Beau ll ( Tanners Boots x Capree Poppy) x Lauries Abby. (Capree Boss ll x Glenlee Rose) Tim a smooth moving dog put up two good runs and was unlucky not to have penned in either - the loss of the points for the pen cost him a chance to beat Abba. Gary White finished third working Binnaburra Luke a 5year old red and tan dog bred by Gordon Curtis (WA) Sired by Whites Tex V (Jendara Bobby x Whites Sally IV) x Ramulan Samantha (Binnaburra Ottis x Ramulan Dusty) Luke put up two good runs he drew an un-cooperative sheep in the finals of the NKFTC and just failed to pen. Gary White and Luke won the Novice event convincingly. David Motley finished fourth with Timaru Bull a 4 year old black and tan male bred by Bill Gibbs, Narromine. Whilst he scored well in the heats he had no luck in the finals. A demonstration of their working ability preceed the Auction with 32 registered bidders buying to a topoof $%2650 for Lot4 a 22 month old Kelpie showing good style and calm touch on his stock in the yard and paddock.Other sales at $2000.00; $1850.00, $1650.00 and younger dogs sold bewtween $800.00 and $300.00 - there were5 lots passed in..A big crowd enjoyed both events in warm weather and a friendly atmosphere.

GREAT SOUTHERN WORKING SHEEPDOG CLUB Annual Three Sheep Trial 12, 13 and 14 November, 2009This club has reformed and held the inaugural official three sheep dog trial at the Albany Agricultural Show. The sheepthat were used in the trial were mixed aged ewes and proved to be very challenging for all the dogs. A number of thedogs were chased by the sheep during their runs. We actually saw another side of the dogs because they had to standtheir ground to be able to force the sheep around the course. In a couple of cases the dogs had to top not the sheepto be able to get them over the bridge.
