N.B. WAR corresponded about literary matters with friends as well as with professional colleagues and contacts, a few of whom became long-term friends. Correspondence with the latter are therefore listed under 353.2.1.

353 2.4 Historical Arranged, roughly, alphabetically. Includes correspondence re the Jamaica Historical Society, the Institute of Jamaica, the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. Also includes some original material e.g. the Manning-Gideon correspondence, and the D B Sangster papers, that probably came into his possession via his contact with the IOJ and should probably be recorded as separate NLJ acquisitions.

Arranged by type: autobiographical, fiction, non-fiction (history, politics, etc.), poems and poetry, and political. Include reports and papers. Mainly typed but also some hand-written works including composition books from WAR’s childhood. Works may or may not have been published. Works are by WAR and others, including his father. N.B. WAR occasionally wrote under the pseudonym, Stephen Endicott.

Most manuscripts by WAR are copies and are on poor quality, very acidic paper.

Number of ‘photos’ may or may not be listed.

Many volumes. 1. It is possible that a few items might have been acquired from the WIRL. [Recommend checking the NLJ’s rare books catalogue for publications that may have gone ‘missing’ and return.] 2. Books include copies of those written by WAR, about Jamaica, about Pan-American issues. Many are works of a general nature that are not relevant to the archive e.g. books about western art, cats, travel, other countries. [Recommend removing works of a general nature from the archive and disposing of them. These are of marginal value to any study of WAR - a list of the contents of his collection should suffice for the most intent of researcher - and are unlikely to conform to NLJ’s acquisitions policy.]

Periodicals include journals, magazines, newsletters, and newspapers etc. May have been kept because they contained works by WAR or for other reasons. Official publications includes all types of government publications.

1925-33 Mainly letters of thanks from dancers and actors re interviews and articles by WAR. Includes letters from Lillian Gish (who took out a subscription to ‘The American Parade’), Martha Graham (“You have given me happiness and a new courage”), Carol Dempster, Doris Kenyon, Norma Talmadge, and John Ford (who suggested that WAR send him a story). Also includes correspondence re WAR’s article on Mata Hari particularly with Donaldson Craig (who also wrote about Isadora Duncan), Mrs Edward Lasker, and G Wensley Waight. Also letter from Natacha Nattova about the suicide of Sacha Lyo, a dancer in the Casino do Paris; letters from Eugenja Liezbinska; and from Tina Valen who was a dancer, ex-Moscow Imperial Ballet.

353.2.2.14 ‘Semmes of Alabama’ 1938-44 Correspondence re WAR’s work on Admiral Semmes including with various members of the Semmes family, and with admirers of the book. Includes letter from Evelyn Kell d’Antignac about her ancestor John McIntosh Kell. Also, letter from Cyril Clemens, President International Mark Twain Society notifying WAR that he had been elected an Honorary Member of the Society, and print of a photo featuring Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) with two other men, signed by Cyril Clemens. WAR carried out early research with Semmes’ grandson, Father M O Semmes of St George’s College, Kingston, Jamaica.

1941-42 Correspondence re Bolivar. PAM helped WAR to obtain permission from Lady Decies to reproduce a copy of a portrait of Bolivar in her possession that had been painted by her Grandfather, Francis M Drexel.

353.2.2.19 Muna Lee de Munoz Marin

1941-49 Correspondence re ‘The Caribbean. The Story of Our Sea of Destiny’, 1941; ‘Pomegranate’ etc. In WAR’s letter of 3 Jun 1945 he writes that NWM was informed that the Governor’s decision not to authorise WAR’s visit to Jamaica was made “on the insistence of Bustamante”. Muna Lee was first writing from the University of Puerto Rico and later from the Division of Cultural Relations, Department of State, Washington.

Jul 1939-41 Correspondence between Wilfred Adolphus Domingo and WAR re the work of The Jamaica Progressive League of New York etc. Correspondence covers speculation on the progress and outcome of the war, on the intentions and actions of Great Britain and the USA in the West Indies, on the Act of Havana, on Bustamante, the Manleys and the PNP including its adoption of socialism and its new constitution, Lend Lease, Domingo’s return to Jamaica to take up Norman Manley’s offer of paid work, etc. From WAR’s letter of 8 May 1940: “Mrs Manley writes me: “We are a handful of intellectuals without a single mob orator. Domingo could make a world of difference to us…” WAD and WAR were concerned about the effects of censorship and WAR devised code names for certain individuals and groups in Jamaica e.g. American soldiers in Jamaica were to be ‘Hawks’, British

soldiers in Jamaica were to be ‘Mongoose’ etc. Includes: WAR’s draft of a ‘declaration for Jamaica’ which was included in his letter to WAD, 20 Jun 1940. The final declaration was submitted by the Jamaica Progressive League to a conference of foreign ministers from the Americas at Havana, Cuba as ‘Submission to the Delegates of the Pan-American Nations in Congress’, 2 Jul 1940, a draft of which is on file. (The Committee Chairman, Hope R Stevens3, represented the Committee at the Conference.) Also includes flyer published by the West Indies National Council: ‘England and the United States profess to be opposed to fascism, yet it is being proposed to sell millions of West Indians in approved Hitler fashion’, and copy letter to President Roosevelt from the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (Gertrude C Bussey), 17 Dec 1940, against the rumoured “selling” of Britain’s West Indies islands to the USA.

At a meeting in Dr Lucien M Brown’s office on 3 August 1936, WAR first put forward the idea for “an association to promote self-government in Jamaica.” This was unanimously supported by those present and a

committee was appointed with WAR as Chairman. The first mass meeting was at the Jamaica Benevolent Association Hall, 210 West 129th Street on 11 Oct 1936. Present included: WAR, A M Wendell Malliet, W A Domingo, Ethelred Brown, Dr T E Hanson, T Burrell, Ivy Esien, James O’Meally, and Senior Delgado of the Puerto Rican Junta. The Constitution was drafted by James O’Meally and adopted 17 Dec 1936.

353.13.1 W A Roberts 1961-63 and 1966

Correspondence with WAR, 1961-62, and with others following WAR’s death in London, England, on 14 Sep 1962, including with Lucille Iremonger, who entertained WAR the night he died, Ethel Rovere, his sister, and with the office of the High Commissioner in London. Includes messages of sympathy particularly from Edward Seaga; Vincent Johnston, The Jamaica Progressive League, Inc. of New York; and W G McFarlane, the Jamaica Progressive League of Kingston. WAR’s body was cremated in London, with Andrew Salkey and Vivian Virtue present at the service, and his ashes buried in the grounds of Manchester Parish Church.

Also includes letter from H P Jacobs, 28 Nov 1966, re WAR’s autobiography, its merit, and publishability. HPJ writes that: “Some of the accounts of Jamaican events (in particular pp.463-468, 494-496, 514-15, 521-2, 535) will give offence (unreasonably, in my opinion)….”
