Our Sodium Journey
• Where we’ve been:– Public Health Community has called on
Government to implement regulations to reduce sodium in the American diet
– New York City led the nationwide effort to reduce sodium through voluntary guidelines in 2010 – the National Sodium Reduction Initiative
– Mars Food was the first food company to officially sign onto NSRI
• Where we are: – Mars Food has achieved the NSRI reduction
targets for both 2012 and 2014
– The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommended that sodium consumption be limited to 2,300 mg per day for adults and children ages 14 and over, which Mars supported
– We’ve reduced sodium in our product line by 25% – and have committed to reduce sodium by another 20% over the next 5 years

Our Sodium Journey: Where We’re Going
• FDA has released draft voluntary sodium reduction guidelines for industry
• Mars is leading a coalition that supports the voluntary guidelines, within an industry that is largely opposed
12
Our Call to Action: • Encourage NSRI member companies to file
comments supporting the FDA guideline process
• Request comments from State & City Departments of Health supporting voluntary sodium guidelines, and demonstrate the success of NSRI

United States Food and Drug Administration’s
Voluntary Sodium Reduction Goals: Target Mean and Upper Bound Concentrations
for Sodium in Commercially Processed, Packaged, and Prepared Foods
What is the FDA Doing?
• Issuing draft, voluntary guidance on sodium reduction targets
‒ Gradual approach:
• Short-term targets (2 years)
• Long-term targets (10 years)
‒ Targets for 150 categories of food that are sales weighted to focus on dominant sellers in each category
‒ Applies to food manufacturers, restaurants and food service operations
• Draft targets serve as a basis for continued dialogue
‒ Additional data and information will help refine
Goals of the Targets
• Help Americans achieve healthier levels of sodium intake
‒ Short-term targets (2 years, goal=3,000 mg/day)
‒ Long-term targets (10 years, goal=2,300 mg/day)
• Provide national guidelines for industry to lead sodium reduction efforts
• Builds upon the NSRI framework and efforts made by industry on sodium reduction
FDA Is Seeking Comments
• The FDA is seeking comments in two phases:‒ August 31, 2016: short-term targets‒ October 31, 2016: long-term targets
• Items for consideration‒ Do the food categories make sense?‒ Are the targets feasible and meaningful?‒ Are there recommended adjustments to the methods used
to calculate baseline sodium content, targets, and maximums?
‒ Are there challenges of implementing the voluntary goals?
• Questions? ‒ Contact Elizabeth ([email protected])
