About Vidyalaya
Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya was started as a small residential school in 1930 by
the well known freedom fighter, educationist, former First Education Minister in Madras Province,
Late Dr. T.S. Avinashilingam Ayya and the foundation stone was laid by Mahatma Gandhiji in
1934. Since then it has grown enormously into a great educational complex with 15 institutions
under its fold including College of Education, Maruthi College of Physical Education, Polytechnic
College, Industrial Training Institute, Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ramakrishna
Mission Vivekananda University, Swami Shivananda Higher Secondary School (with both Tamil
Medium and English Medium) a Residential High School, T.A.T. Kalanilayam, Primary School and
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Dispensary.
Vidyalaya is situated in a land of about 300 acres at a distance of 18 kilometers from
Coimbatore on the Coimbatore - Mettupalayam highway. Vidyalaya is partly residential and about
2000 students live in eight hostels attached to different institutions. It has organized many
International and National seminars and published many educational publications. Besides,
Vidyalaya hosts several spiritual and service activities under the leadership of Swami
Abhiramananda, the Secretary, Vidyalaya. The Platinum Jubilee (1930-2004) was celebrated in
2004. The College celebrates Golden Jubilee in 2014.
About The College of Arts and Science
We are proudly informing that, 2013 is the Golden Jubilee year of our college. Since 1964
we are rendering educational services to the rural students. It has the mission of training the youth
to gain spiritual strength, intellectual independence and more character based on the great ideals of
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi.
The College of Arts and Science has 1o UG & 6 PG Programmes both under aided and un-
aided streams. Autonomous status was conferred in the academic year 1981-82. It has been one of
the foremost autonomous colleges in Tamilnadu. Under autonomy the institution has introduced
several curriculum and examination reforms. It was accredited by NMC in2003, and reaccredited in
2009.
About The Department of Co-operation
The Post-Graduate and Research Department of Co-operation is one of the pioneering
departments of the college. It has the distinction of inheriting the legacy of the College of Rural
Higher Education (Ministry of Education, Government of India) which had existed before Arts and
Science College, teaching Co-operation as a major subject since early 1960's for both UG and PG
Students.
About The Seminar
The Cooperative Enterprise is a complex human system that must be understood on several
levels, its dual role as a venture with social and economic outputs is a defining characteristic as its
collective ownership, cooperatives and other membership-based organizations have proven to offer
valuable opportunities (directly and indirectly) for farm and non-farm rural and urban
employment.
The United Nations General Assembly pronounced 2012 as the International Year of
Cooperatives. It helped us to know the contributions of cooperatives towards socio-economic
development. It has been noted that cooperatives impact poverty reduction, employment
generation and social integration which contributes toward creating better lives. The primary aim
of Cooperative has always been to better the precarious lives of those who struggle to get afoot hold
in the mean world. Cooperatives have been extending their services to strive towards a holistic
social development. Cooperative system is one of the strongest is flourishing; they have
significantly contributed in achieving the record food grain production of about 250 millions tones
during 2011-12. In India, Cooperatives created over a million job opportunities both in villages and
towns; slums have given way to affordable houses for the slum-dwellers-over 4 lakh housing units
have been constructed; women empowerment has been a key achievement through cooperative
movements like AMUL, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, TCMS, Annapurna Mahila Credit Cooperative Societies etc.
apart from the core activities, cooperative actively provide beliefs to victims of natural disasters
and assist in restoring the nature; conservation of environment, planting saplings, eco friendly
operations are also given utmost importance.
Cooperatives, thus aim at growth with equity. These can be useful institutions for inclusive
growth, as they meet the requirements in respect of their core clients - farmers, growers, artisans,
handloom weavers, producers and women, who need the support of the cooperative movement.
Cooperatives can also be an institutional mechanism for involving millions of our people who fall
outside the purview of the formal economy to participate in economic activities.
Message from Swami Abhiramananda
It is a great pleasure for me to have come to understand that the Post graduate and
Research Department of Cooperation of Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and
Science is conducting a UGC-Sponsored National Seminar entitled ‘Cooperative Enterprises:
Promoting Indian Economy.
The Cooperative movement in India which is one of the largest voluntary movements in the
world has been serving the people in various ways. Its genesis lies in the need, a few decades back,
of the farmers of this country who were being exploited by unscrupulous and usurious money-
lenders. It was felt at that time that for agricultural development, which was important for the
overall development of the economy, it was necessary to rid the farmers of the clutches of money
lenders. It was how the credit cooperative movement was born in India and it continued to be so for
quite a few years when it gradually expanded itself to other unpenetrated areas and diversified its
activities in almost every field of socio economic activity. The prosperity of the farmer and the
common man no doubt has increased due to cooperatives providing them help in various ways.
I believe that this National Seminar will be an eye opener for all the research scholars,
faculty members, students from various educational institutions to aspire further to accomplish
research excellence in this field
I appeal to the participants to gain the utmost benefit from this National Seminar. I extend
my best wishes to all the participants.
