Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America

Annual Report 2014-2015 3

Hello everyone, I do hope all is well and you are in good spirits. I myself moved out to Nebraska Oct 2015, with my parents. I wish you another great year with plenty of events and activities. This is, however, our Annual Report where we look back and reflect on the previous year’s financial’s and other going’s on.First things first, our audit and financial report has turned out to be acceptable and has met all State and Federal requirements as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the state of Oregon. Over the past year we have managed to put on some great outreach events working with other organizations such as Oregon Adaptive Sports with Heroes in Sisters snow skiing; the MS society and their annual MS Walk; Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs Expo; Joint Car Show with State Veteran Home in Lebanon, OR. The Nation Forest Service and our Free Fish Day at Detroit Lake. OPVA annual Gold Cup Golf Tournament; Home Depot and their grant program to help veterans make

their homes more accessible with wider doors, new decks with ramps and walkways free of obstacles. We raffled off a 64 ½ Ford Mustang to this year’s lucky winner Debbie Tracy and the winner of the Glock Pistol was Russel Bowling. We have made good use of our Chapter van picking up and delivering donated Durable Medical Equipment (DME). We managed to cover all our bases and we still feel like we have fallen short somehow. I know many of you feel the same way and all that can be done is to never give up and keep moving forward. This Chapter continues to reach out with its “Paralog,” newsletter, website www.oregonpva.com, Facebook page; Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America, Electronic Banner Ads, setting up booths at various events, networking, membership outreach, hospital visitations and word of mouth. Last but not least, I want to thank all the family members and volunteers who help out week-end and week-out to help all of our events run smoothly.

We have just completed our 2015 fiscal year. Overall, we had a great year. As Vice President, I oversaw all the department heads concerning the scheduled events. This year was busy and we had better participation than last year. We appreciate all the participation from our members and are still looking forward to seeing more of you at events. Our directors work very hard to provide activities for all our members.

Our goal at Oregon Paralyzed Veterans is to help all of our members and their caregivers improve their quality of life. We need your help to get to know what we are offering as far as activities and programs. The Paralog is a good source for information and our website www.oregonpva.org is new and improved. We are proud of what we accomplished in 2015 and have high hopes for this coming year.

Hospital Liaison Program Annual ReportMike Rosebalm

Sports and Recreation Program Annual ReportLarry Gardner

The PVA-Oregon (OPVA) Chapter Hospital Liaison Program primary purpose is to advocate for and monitor the delivery of high-quality and appropriate healthcare benefits and services for our members. To do this OPVA keeps a working relationship with the Seattle SCI Center and the Vancouver, WA SCI Primary Care Team, Portland/Vancouver Veterans Administration Volunteer Services (VAVS) and PVA National Service Officer (NSO) serving our members. This includes monthly visits to Seattle and weekly visits to Portland/Vancouver VA as well as an ongoing communication with the NSO.

This year the Hospital Liaison Program assisted a member to receive prosthetic equipment delay problem, provided

scholarships for continuing education so SCI RN’s could receive their Rehab RN qualification to enhance SCI care and issues, continued to support and/or fund recreation programs with the medical facilities and veterans home in our service area. The Hospital Liaison Program Director served on the VAVS Executive Committee and participated in the annual PVA Site Visit of the Seattle SCI Center to ensure Compliance with VHA Directive 1176 and Handbook as well. Some other current activities include keeping updated with the ongoing construction at the Vancouver campus. The new construction includes a new 50 unit apartment complex for homeless veterans, new outpatient specialties clinic and new Fisher House which is scheduled to open January 2016.

OK, its been another good year for the Oregon Chapter Sports Events. Oregon Adaptive Sports put on another snow skiing weekend at Mt. Bachelor and Hood, called Heroes in Sisters. If you like the outdoors and the snow, you will love this event. Then came the annual Rabbit Hunt at E.E. Wilson game preserve with Mary’s Peak Hound Club, over by Corvallis, OR. This is a fun event to get out and hunt a rabbit and watch the trained dogs chase the rabbits out of the brush, the whole hunting area is wheelchair accessible. Then as it warms up we have a free fishing day at Detroit Lake, this is a great time for kids to learn and have fun fishing. This year we had 3 bottom fishing trips out of Depoe Bay, Oregon, it’s a five hour trip, dropping crab pots on the way out, then hopefully catching your limit, then pick up the crab pots on the way in, lots of fun.

Trapshooting is always a favorite, with the OPVA Trapshoot in Hillsboro, and several other shoots during the year at Hillsboro and Albany trap clubs, including fund-raisers and national events around the country. For the golfers we had our big golf tournament at McNary Golf Club in Keizer, OR, which is always a big success and fun event. The VA has a golf clinic at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club where you can learn to putt; drive; chip then go out and enjoy the sport.During hunting season, we had 3 members win a draw for a elk hunt at Dale and Wendy’s Ranch just out of Prinville, Oregon. This include a weeks stay at their cabin up in the woods, which was supplied and ready to go with a beautiful view right off the cabins deck.Well thats all for now and looking forward to another year with lots of sports programs.
