REPORT 2016 – 2017
The important NSS events of the year 2016-17
are given in brief as follows:
29th May 2016 NSS Programme officers together attended the meeting of programme
Officers at MG university
6th June 2016 World Environment Day celebration at NSS office in MG University
attended by two volunteers – Christeena Thomas and Akhila K S of II
DC B.Com.
8th June 2016 Christeena Thomas and Akhila K S from II DC B.Com were selected
as the NSS volunteer secretaries of the academic year 2016-17.
10-12 June 2016 The newly selected Volunteer Secretaries attended the Volunteer
Secretaries Training Camp at B. K. College, Amalagiri.
13th June 2016 Programme officers met NSS volunteers in the auditorium to wish
them success in the new academic year and prepared the action plan
for the year.
17th June 2016 College NSS unit together with College Library and Malayalam
Department celebrated Reading Day. Dr. Sabu D Mathew, Associate
Professor, Department of Malayalam, St. Thomas College Pala
inaugurated the Reading Day Celebration. The function was presided
over by Dr. Alice Jose, The Principal.
In association with this, a collage competition was conducted in the
college. The winners are

21st June 2016 11 volunteers participated in the city level Yoga day celebrations held
at Baselius College Kottayam.
NSS unit together with the Department of Economics celebrated
National Yoga Day in our college together with Nehru Yuvakendra
and VICIB. Smt.Leena Sunny (Muncipal Chairperson) inaugurated
the function. Dr. Alice Jose, the Principal presided over the function
11th July 2016 World Population Day celebration: In connection with World
Population Day, College NSS unit together with Chemistry and
Mathematics Departments conducted an Essay Writing Competition
on “Population Explosion-Challenges”

15th July 2016 Programme Officer Sr. Sonia K Thomas and an NSS volunteer
Swathi Thomas of II DC English attended an awareness programme
on Corruption organized by District Police Cell and MG University at
Baselius College Kottayam.
01stAugust 2016 The NSS and NCC volunteers took oath on Cleanliness in accordance
to Swach Bharath Abhiyan. The NSS volunteers cleaned and prepared
a garden near Mathematics department.
08th August 2016 Thirty NSS volunteers of II DC filled covers with mud and prepared
papaya seeds for plantation.
12th August 2016 The college NSS unit observed International Day in collaboration with
NCC and Youth Red Cross. The unit also conducted an extempore
speech competition on the topic “Role of young people in eradicating
poverty and achieving sustainable development”.

15th Aug 2016 Independence Day Celebration: Independence day was celebrated in
the campus. The Principal Dr. Alice Jose hoisted the national flag.
NSS Volunteers delivered the Independence Day message in English,
Malayalam and Hind languages. Sweets were distributed to the
students on that occasion.
20th Aug 2016 NSS Orientation programme for Volunteers was conducted. Prof.
Jimmy James, Assistant Professor, St. Stephan’s college Uzhavoor
was the resource person. He motivated the volunteers with the
objectives and goals of NSS and inspired the volunteers to do selfless
service to fellow human being.
26th Aug 2016 Advisory Board Meeting was conducted at room No:2 to discuss about
seven days camp.
NSS volunteer secretaries Kum. Christeena Thomas and Kum. Akhila
K. S. participated in the intercollegiate camp at university NSS office.
9th-15th Sep 2016 NSS seven day special camp was in Chittar Gramapanchayath. The
camp was inaugurated by Shri. Roshy Augustine MLA, Kerala on
11th September at St. George L. P. School, Chittar. The activities of
the camp were Main-Road Beautification, the school compound
cleaning, Gardening, Awareness classes and Onam celebration with
Onam games. A medical Camp led by a team of doctors including Dr.
Sr. Magdalene from Kidangoor Lourde Hospital was arranged for the
people in Chittar Gramapanchayath.
23rd Sep 2016 Sreelakshmi C. S. of II DC Zoology and Jayalakshmi Ajith of II DC
Physics (Vocational) participated in the selection camp of Pre-
RD(Adventure, National) at BK college Amalagiri. Sreelakshmi C. S.
of II DC Physics (Voc.) has got selection for Pre-RD training camp at
Trichi (Oct 7Th-14th)

Economics Participated In The World Heart Day Celebration Hosted
By K. E. College, Mannanam.
27th Oct 2016 Dr. Kochurani George attended the Programme Officers’ meeting at
M.G. university. The meeting was followed by a talk on “Organic
Farming”.
4th-6th Nov 2016 Jobina Jose and Haritha Haridas of II DC Botany attended the
intercollegiate camp at MES College Erumeli.
02nd Feb 2017 The college NSS unit conducted a Blood Donation camp and the
camp was led by a medical team of seven members headed by Dr.
Neethu Krishnan, Blood Bank MCH Kottayam. 100 students donated
their blood.
On the same day Archana Prakash, Jomol Jose and Jyothis Elsa
Jose of I DC Economics attended Intercollegiate Camp at Devmatha
College, Kuravilangad. Archana Prakash was selected as the best
camper at Kuravilangad.
03rd Feb 2017 A mini camp of three days was conducted. There were skill
development classes led by Smt. Charu from Christu Raj Socialwork
Society and a talk on Tuberculosis was given to the NSS volunteers
by Dr. Sabarinath from Paika government VHC.
13th Feb 2017 The NSS volunteer secretaries Christeena Thomas and Akhila K S
participated in Green Protocol Seminar held at BK College,
Amalagiri.
27th Feb 2017 Dr. Kochurani George participated in the Programme Officers’
meeting at MG University.
24th March 2017 Four NSS volunteers along with Programme Officers Dr. Kochurani
George and Sr. Sonia K Thomas visited Devadan Centre. Clothes,
soaps, tooth brushes, tooth pastes and a sum of Rs. 1000 collected
from our College students were given to the inmates of Devadan
Centre.
31st March 2017 The final advisory meeting of the year was conducted.

The first meeting of the Advisory Committee was held on 26-08-2016.The meeting
reviewed the activities of the year 2015-’16 and prepared the action plan for the academic
year 2016-2016. The committee discussed about the coming seven days camp at Chittar.
The second meeting of the Advisory Committee was held on 30-03-2017 at 3 pm. The
activities of the seven days camp were evaluated. Also the activities of the academic year
were reviewed and evaluated. NSS programme officer Dr. Kochurani George presented a
brief report of the NSS activities and accounts.
(The advisory committee consists of College authorities, Former and Current
Programme officers, Senior teachers, KSS members etc.)
Adopted Village: Chittar gramma Panchayat
Chittar is about 8 kilometers away from Pala at Kottayam district. Most of the
people belong to middle and low income groups. As a part of campus community partnership
the NSS unit of Alphonsa College has adopted this village and initiated several programmes
for the development of the people of this village.

1 Took leading role in constituting Advisory committee with members from college and
partner village.
2 Initiated the Clean and Healthy campus programme
3 Organized Noon-Meal programme for poor students.
4 Ensured participation of NSS volunteers in Inter-collegiate programmes of Mahatma
Gandhi University.
5 Attended programmer officers’ conference in the University. The conference
discussed the action plan for the current year.
6 Organized awareness programmes for the whole college. (Blood donation, World
AIDS day, Population day, Reading day etc.)

The University level preplanning of NSS activities was conducted on
29th May 2016 in the MG University. The programme officers Dr. Kochurani
George and Sr. Sonia K Thomas attended the meeting.
INAUGURATION OF NSS AND ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
The NSS activities of the year 2016-2017 were formally inaugurated
by Dr. Alice Joseph on 21.06.2016. Orientation Programme for I DC
Volunteers was given by Prof. Jimmy James, Assistant Professor and the
NSS programme officer, Uzhavoor College. The class was very much helpful
to bring out the views of the students in solving the social problems. In this
programme, there were Ice-breaking sessions and group activities like group
discussions, presentations etc. The NSS volunteers actively participated.

READING DAY
In connection with Reading Day with the collaboration of the NSS Unit of
Alphonsa College Pala, Department of Malayalam & College Library conducted
a Reading Day programme. Dr. Sabu D Mathew, Associate professor, St.
Thomas College Pala was the chief guest. He introduced many books and
writers to the students and reminded the students the importance of reading
books.

The NSS volunteers took oath on Cleanliness in accordance to
Swach Bharath Abhiyan. The NSS volunteers cleaned college front part and
planted some plants near Mathematics department.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
On 15th August 2016, College NSS Unit celebrated the Independence
day. The Principal Dr. Alice Joseph hoisted flag and Ms Anu Jose, Assistant
professor in English, gave the independence day message. Three NSS
Volunteers - Kumari Nimmy Sunny, Kumari Swathi Thomas and Kumari Alka
George- delivered the Independence Day message in English, Malayalam and
Hindi languages. Sweets were distributed to the students on that occasion.
In connection with Independence Day, College NSS unit and History
department together conducted a patriotic song competition.
Pre-camp activities
College NSS volunteers prepared for the seven day camp by planting
seeds of Papaya and Chilly. Also the NSS volunteers collected saplings from
houses and Kozha Krishivkuppu .
NSS SEVEN DAYS SPECIAL CAMP
The NSS Seven Days special camp commenced on 9th September 2016.
Adopted village was Chittar.
The seven day special camp at Chittar was inaugurated by Shri.
Roshy Augustine MLA on 10th September 2016. The Principal Dr. Alice Joseph
presided over the inauguration function.The vicar of St. George church Chittar
Rev. Fr. Shaji John, Karoor Gramapanchayath president Smt. Aniamma Jose,
the Block Panchayath member Sri. Santhosh Kuriath and the ward member Sri.
Mathew Veranal addressed the gathering. The inaugural function of the camp
came to an end with the vote of thanks of NSS programme officer Sr. Sonia K
Thomas.

Yoga class by Dr. Simon Augustine
The special faculty for yoga pointed out the importance of yoga in order to
remain physically fit and mentally alert. Yoga deepens our breath, opens our vocal chords,
increases the intake of oxygen by the blood, alkalizes our body and relaxes our mind. The
exercises began with a simple meditation which was quite therapeutic and soothing. This was
followed by the Suryanamaskar in the soft evening sunlight. Some gentle and effective
aasanas were taught to the students that would keep their body fresh even in this summer,
when it is unbearably hot and sultry. By 8:00 pm, the exercises came to a close with a
meditation. It was a refreshing experience for the students.

Closing day of the camp: Valedictory
The chief guest of the valedictory function was Sr. Dolly, the Head of Social Work
Department from BVM Holy Cross College. Kumari Nayana delivered the welcome speech.
The camp members selected the Best NSS workers as Kumari Archana Prakash and Jomol
Jose. The other supporting best campers were Kumari Nayana K.K. and BBhema. The chief
guest distributed prizes of best campers and winners of various Cultural programmes. The
valedictory function came to an end with the vote of thanks of the programme officer Sr
Sonia K Thomas.
A Free Medical camp
A team of doctors from Kidangoor L. L. M. Hospital conducted a medical camp
together with the college NSS unit for the Chittar people. It included a class on Diseases by
Dr.Sr. Marzeles, Tests on Blood group, Diabetic and Medical consultations on General
Medicine, Peaditry, Dental section etc.
Blood Donation camp
The college NSS unit conducted a Blood Donation camp on 2nd Feb 2017 and the
camp was led by a medical team of seven members headed by Dr. Neethu Krishnan, Blood
Bank MCH Kottayam. Nearly 100 students donated their blood.
MINICAMP
A minicamp of three days was organized for the NSS volunteers on 25th, 26th and
27th February 2017. The principal of the college, Dr. Alice Jose formally inaugurated the
function. She stressed on the importance of socializing with people around us rather than
those in the virtual, technical world. The class was led by our Alumnae Ms. Charu Kumar
from Christu-Raj Social-service Society, Pala. The volunteer secretary Kumari hristeena
Sebastian delivered the vote of thanks.
Awareness programme on Life Style Diseases
Dr. Sabarinath from Paika VHC handled a class about Tuberculosis on 21st January
2017 to 100 NSS volunteers of this college. Through the class he enlightened the students
about the cause and symptoms of Tuberculosis and the necessary steps to be taken to
prevent this disease. He also conveyed the message of staying healthy with proper food
habits. The students were provided light refreshment after the class.
A visit to Devdan Centre
The college NSS unit collected old clothes, other daily usage items and a sum
from each department class wise to give to Devdan centre inmates.

DC Economics attended Intercollegiate Camp on 2nd Feb 2017 at Devmatha College,
Kuravilangad. Archana Prakash was selected as the best camper at Kuravilangad.
