“Strategize on spending on skill development for the community” says S. Ramadorai, Chairman, NSDC October 12, 2014, New Delhi: In line with the Government’s Skill India Mission, S. Ramadorai, Chairman, National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) sent out a strong message to the industry and various stakeholders in the skilling ecosystem. “One thing we all agree upon is that, achieving the vision of powering our economy to a sustained growth of 8% and above requires a strong talent base. Given the scale and quality challenges in skilling 500 million youth it is imperative that all the players - the Government, Industry, Industry bodies, Foundations, Training providers and NGO’s have a very high order of collaboration. This will mean a relationship of give and take, it means changing things that have not worked so far and adopting new ways of meeting the goal.” Being in the space for over 4 years, and having met hundreds of training providers, NGO’s, funding agencies, not to mention the 4 decades in TCS where building talent was a critical element of growth, Ramadorai had given some suggestions – “When it comes to industry – we as consumers need to not just play a central role but also need invest and contribute towards the benefit of the sector that we are in. It’s time to ask what is the right thing to do for the sector rather than what’s in it for me, of course we must think of profits as well and I firmly believe that these two are not contradictory.” Msg to Industry : What we can do Wherever possible, employ formally trained people with skill certification and give them an appropriate compensation premium

October 12, 2014, New Delhi: In line with the Government’s Skill India Mission, S.

This will mean a relationship of give and take, it means changing things that have not worked so far and adopting new ways of meeting the goal.”

Being in the space for over 4 years, and having met hundreds of training providers, NGO’s, funding agencies, not to mention the 4 decades in TCS where building talent was a critical element of growth, Ramadorai had given some suggestions –

“When it comes to industry – we as consumers need to not just play a central role but also need invest and contribute towards the benefit of the sector that we are in. It’s time to ask what is the right thing to do for the sector rather than what’s in it for me, of course we must think of profits as well and I firmly believe that these two are not contradictory.”

Msg to Industry : What we can do

Wherever possible, employ formally trained people with skill certification and give them an appropriate compensation premium

Adopt ITIs, Polytechnics, Community Colleges and work with Universities to create role model industry partnerships – enhance curriculum, donate machines, equipment, computers, upskill faculty, offer on the job training, engage apprentices, have your HR offer sabbaticals to your employees to teach and lastly help your experienced workers become formally skill certified as per the provisions available under 'Recognition of Prior Skills'

The focus should be as much on entrepreneurship as on employment in jobs in the industry Strategize on spending on skill development for the community - a part of the 2% of net

profits CSR mandate, join hands with others to create a larger fund rather than do this alone Save on capital expense, get into flexi MoUs with the Government of India or State

Governments to utilize their facilities to skill people for your own captive requirements with the possibility of getting even the operating expenses reimbursed by the Govt.

Embrace the new industry-friendly apprenticeship regime and take more interns onboard;, MSME units now set to get reimbursement of 50% of the stipend paid to apprentices

Depute the best-of-breed professionals on Sector Skill Councils so that the NOS result into appropriate curricula leading to development of highly skilled people with high employability

Participation with the SSCs in affiliation, accreditation and certification Encourage highly skilled employees to volunteer as master trainers to train the faculty or as

guest lecturers with various training providers Engage with industry bodies like CII to utilize the collective experience and connects which

they have to offer such as skill development programs, advocacy, outreach and most importantly forging international partnerships, sending delegations and organizing summits for skill development

Leverage technology to the fullest in all aspects of the value chain- from mobilization to training to placement. For example – digitization of content, creating online platforms for learning, assessment, counselling; gamification of course contents etc.

Participate actively in world skills competition selection organized by NSDC to ensure that India gets rightly recognized on the world podium of skills

And lastly while addressing the skill mismatch in the economy, focus on the larger perspective of the vision of ‘inclusive growth’ i.e. – encourage employment of persons with disabilities, rural, minorities and underprivileged women and youth
