Keith’s “start” with Shorthorn Cattlewas through a 4-H project. He creditshis uncle, Milton Nagely, for beinginstrumental in getting him interested inthe Purebred business.The first significant purchase was

Melita Rosewood 2D, in 1954 at theKansas State Sale purchased from ArthurWaits of Cassoday, KS. Numerousoffspring have sold from this one cow,such as the pedigree of WaukaruGoldmine 2109 whose dam has two KLMelita Rosewood cows in her pedigree. In 1955 Keith purchased Solomon

Valley Rose, an 11-year-old bred-backcow with twin calves, (a bull and aheifer). His Dad thought Keith hadmade a bad mistake and told him, “Youhave an 11-year-old cow about ready tolay down and die, and a heifer calf thatwon’t breed!” So, Keith did not feel verygood about his $265-dollar purchase.Keith said he was only a year out of

high school and didn’t have muchmoney. But things didn’t work out toobad. The cow had another heifer calfand bred again for one more heifer andyes, the twin heifer did breed, which wasthe only heifer twin I’ve ever had, with abull twin that did breed.That twin calf established the KL

Royal Rose family of which KL DoubleDuty came from. For many years, KLDouble Duty had the lowest birth-weight EPD in the Shorthorn Breed.Three of the nation’s top nine Birth-Weight Trait-Leading Ladies for 2004were raised at the Lauer ShorthornFarm, two of which were from the KLRoyal Rose line.Additions were made to the herd in

1957 with the purchase of 1/3 of a herdfrom Missouri when his wife, Nadene’s,brother bought the other two-thirds. AllKL Rosewoods, KL Cassandria, and KL

Mina Star cow familiesstemmed from there. An important decision was

made in 1970 with thepurchase of HomedaleCornet Leader 72nd from theKaehler Family in Minn.which was Keith’s first polledbull. All the cows werehorned, but about 99% ofthe calves born were polled.Keith supported the

formerly active Mid-Kansas ShorthornShow and Sale held in Salina, Kan., formany years. and was President of thatAssociation for fifteen years. He also hasserved as President of the Kan.Shorthorn Association Board ofDirectors.He and Nadene helped coordinate

Kansas Junior Field Days held inAbilene for the Kan. ShorthornAssociation and Keith has served asCentral Kansas Free Fair BoardPresident. Keith was named one of the Builders

of the Breed in 1987. He says it was areal honor to be named with some of thegreat breeders of the nation that year. Atthat time, he had a goal of starting a newShorthorn herd each year. That was notalways possible, but as recently as 2016,he furnished stock for two new herds toget started. At different times, he hasserved as a Kansas delegate to theAnnual Meeting of the AmericanShorthorn Association.One highlight of their business was

being a host for the 2004 World Tour.Keith says that it was exciting to seepeople from many places arrive in bigbuses. After seeing tied-up Show Cattlefor several days, one person commented,“Now we get to see some real cattle!”The Lauers also hosted a group from

Wales who came because of their interestin cattle; and at different times havehosted the Kansas Shorthorn Tours. Keith’s cattle interests included

serving as a County Director and alongtime member of the KansasLivestock Association, held offices in theformer Extension-sponsored DickinsonCounty Cattle Producers, served as a 4-H Beef Leader, and he provided trophiesand Shorthorn awards for fairs andshows.

Keith and Nadene have been active inChurch, School, and Communityactivities for sixty years. They wereinducted into the Kansas Master Farmer- Master Homemaker organization in1990. They feel that their cattleoperation contributed to this award.The Lauers’ daughter, Rita and

husband Ellis Yoder, who live inMcPherson County, Kan., and havethree sons - Bradley, Kevin, and LaneYoder. Keith said, “I am still farmingand ranching - partly because I do nothave anyone to take it over, which is dueto the fact that our grandsons allgraduated from Kansas-State University,and the professors made all of them intoMechanical Engineers!”Keith feels the Commercial part of his

business has been important, bysupplying “sound” and productive cattlein numbers to commercial cattlemen;such as supplying 69 bulls in six years toa Nebraska breeder, 10 bulls each tobreeders in CO. and WY., 40 heiferseach for two breeders in KS., as well asthe majority of customers who onlyneed one bull at a time.Great satisfaction has come from

being able to supply breeding stock tosuch outstanding operations as DeerTrail Ranch, KS; Waukaru Farms, IN;Jungels Polled Shorthorns, ND;Leveldale Farms, IL; Loving PolledShorthorns,KS; Sullivan Farms, IA;Hugh Moore & Sons, IL; Triple CShorthorns, KS; Fischer Cattle Co., KS;Fieser Family Polled Shorthorns, KS; 5 JFarms, CO.; and many other goodcustomers.Keith has been a member of the

American Shorthorn Assoc. for 63 years.He still loves to raise good PolledShorthorns, which when handled right,are so docile and their maternal traits areunbeatable! He feels many folks are“missing the boat” by not using goodShorthorn bulls on black cows. Having sold cattle to customers in

thirteen states, Keith says, “The mostenjoyable and lasting thingis notmonetary, but good friends in manyplaces. The few heifers that I had in myteens have proved to be more than a 4-H project - - instead, a VOCATION.
