Preamble

A major portion of our country lives in villages; and

people still are living in houses which do not meet safety

criteria to the fullest. Low Income Group people are not

much capable as well to get a good RCC framed house, as

it costs much. All these issues can be avoided if we try to

utilise locally available materials and make a properly

engineered house by utilising the same. Bamboo is

abundantly available in India and has the huge potential

with 14 million hectares of bamboo forest area. India is

the second largest country in terms of bamboo resources.

Bamboo products (bamboo boards, bamboo veneers,

bamboo mat corrugated roofing sheets, etc) due to their

physical and mechanical performance in terms of

hardness, stability and strength are gaining attention with

large opportunities in emerging market. Many of the

traditional architectural styles use Bamboo as one of the

major constituent. New technologies on jointing,

protection and preservation of bamboo has been

developed which has increased its durability and quality

and opened new areas for bamboo as wood substitute.

Traditional bamboo culm used in rural housing can now

be transformed into new and innovative bamboo based

products with latest technology and can be used in top

grade houses in roofing, flooring, doors, windows, etc.

Many organisations in our country are working for the

promotion of Bamboo, yet many steps need to be taken to

make a sustainable growth in the required section.

Workshop Content

The workshop aims to share the experiences of experts,

researchers and professionals working in this area with

focus on advanced practices and techniques on the

following;

Bamboo species characterisation for use as structure

members in building/housing

Design of bamboo structures including strength of

joints

Design & construction of Bamboo structures in India

& Abroad

Bamboo as building materials & components

Treatment of bamboo for fire, termite & moisture

resistance

R&D, testing & design facilities in India

The endeavour of this workshop is also to discuss case

studies in conjunction with sustainability & economy

covering social aspects as well.

The experts from various organizations working into the

field of utilisation of Bamboo as a building material, such as
