New Hope Lutheran Church as a congregation would not exist without its many volunteers. Everything that makes New Hope the vibrant congregation of believers that we are, would be lost without people giving so generously of their time, talent, and treasures. Much of what is done is seen by most; setting the altar every Sunday by the altar guild; donations of food left at the front of the church that go to several outreach organizations is there for all to see; the won-derful music we hear each Sunday; these are just a few of the visible signs of the many volun-teer opportunities. But did you know that much of the volunteer work to keep New Hope func-tioning, and some important volunteer opportunities, go relatively unseen by the congregation? Some examples are the prison ministry where several of our members serve; the Stephen Min-isters who privately give help to those of us who need someone to talk to; and the property committee that keeps our building and grounds so well maintained. These ministries happen mostly behind the scenes, and many of us never know they’re even being done or who is doing them.

This month, I would like honor an individual who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes for several years to make sure that the business end of New Hope comes off without a hitch. Ira Burcham has chaired the Finance Ministry Team for the last 3 ½ years. He has monitored each of our accounts, ensuring each ministry team has the resources they need to do their work. He’s worked closely with council and ministry chairs to create the budget each year, and he has been a valuable source of information for me and the church’s council, providing a histori-cal background on past financial decisions.

Ira has decided to step down from the Finance Ministry Team this past month. He will contin-ue to serve as a counter and be a regular at our early band-led worship. When you see him at worship or between services, please extend to him your deepest thanks. I know that there are many of you in this congregation who give of yourselves, out of a desire to serve in Jesus’ name, and so to you also, I express my gratitude.

Peace, Perry Anderson President, Congregational Council

F i f th Sunday Worship August 30!

Mark your calendars now and join the family of New Hope for our Fifth Sunday worship and celebration at 10 am, on Sunday, August 30.

We will lift up, share, and celebrate ministry in all its forms, during service and in our potluck lunch to fol-low. New Hope is truly blessed to be a community of doers -- putting ministry in action as we are called to do in Christ's name. We will celebrate and recognize how we minister to the family, our neighbors, and friends near and around the world whom we may not have yet met; and do so as a family in faith, together.

"But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: 'When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.' ... It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evange-lists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and be-come mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." (Ephesians 4:7-8, 11-13)

As has been our practice with our Fifth Sunday cele-brations, we'll follow the service with a potluck lunch. Hotdogs and other "tubular meats" will be provided; bring a finger food contribution to share with others!

Tell me something about Stephen Ministry….

Stephen Ministers are members of Christian congregations who:

provide confidential one-to-one care to others: listening, praying, encouraging, caring, visiting faithfully, and bringing Christ’s love and care.

work with people who are hospitalized, grieving, divorced, unemployed, homebound, relocating, dealing with parenting issues, etc.

Stephen Ministers don’t take the place of trained professionals when such help is needed, and they don’t solve problems – they help the care receiver figure out his or her own solutions. They’re ministers in the broadest sense of that word. When you minister to someone, you take care of them. All of the meanings of minister — both as a noun and as a verb — contain a grain of the original Latin meaning, "servant."

Stephen Ministers complete 50 hours of training before ever meeting with a care receiver. They learn about listening, assertiveness, confidentiality, and many other aspects of caregiving. This training helps their relationships become richer and deeper in many contexts: at home, at church, at work, and with friends.

The next training program will begin in mid-September. Most classes meet on Monday evenings for about 2 hours; training will be completed in early February. Is it time for you to join this ministry? There are handouts explaining more about Stephen Ministry on a table near kitchen in the MPR – pick one up!

Fill out the application form (available on the Stephen Ministry table in the multipurpose room on Sunday mornings; also available from the church office – call Sharon at 410-381-4673 and ask her to send you one). Applications for the fall 2015 class must be received by the end of August. You will then have an opportunity to meet with our Stephen Leaders to ask any questions and make your final decision.
