Natter Week 7 Term 2 2017 Dear Parents, Last Monday our 3/4 drama group auditioned for the Arts Alive Drama Festival. I watched the very clever and well- rehearsed performance which impressed the judges and I am looking forward to hearing about their entry onto the stage at the Seymour Centre. Congratulations to all the students and thank you to our teachers, Ingrid Mailler and Amelia Bannerman as well as their supportive parent group, for your passion, experience and effort to create this opportunity. Many thanks to Bruce Baker and the Music Committee members who assisted in moving some music equipment to the Creative Space (the room next to the K-2 toilet block) last week and thanks to Nicola Elliott and Stacey from Life Skills for accommodating the parents who were able to join in on a Life Skills session. Thank you also to Kellie Cheney, Sharon Smithies and Sandra Nicol, for supervising students for the Science competition last week. Year 4 also experienced a wonderful excursion to Barangaroo. Thank you to the Year 4 team for your planning and organisation of this fabulous learning opportunity. Great success was had on the sporting fields last week with the Senior Girls’ and Senior Boys’ softball teams both coming away with convincing wins and our Senior Boys Soccer Knockout team also experiencing a great win against Avalon. Congratulations to the students for their skill and teamwork, as well as David Cox and Greg Moran for their coaching expertise. More information can be found in the sports section of the Natter. Our P&C donations this year, will go towards playground improvements and a wonderful team of staff, parents and students are gathering ideas to assist with this planning. Next Tuesday 13 June, we have our P&C Meeting in the library. We look forward to our class parents or their representatives attending and appreciate your time to support us in this way. It must have been snowing somewhere in Australia over the past week and for those members of the Snowsports team, please ensure you have completed your 2017 Snowsports Interschools Payment letter with race selections and payment by Tuesday 4pm at the latest. Please note, there can be no changes to the events selected after this time, to allow for team planning and the entry of Newport students into the Interschools online registration system. Please also ensure that you have completed the waivers (participants and volunteer marshalls) on the Interschools site. Coming up this week we have our 5/6 Premier’s Debating Team competing at Mona Vale, our Multicultural Public speaking semi-finals, an environmental team meeting, a Year 1 excursion to Gibberagong, Year 3/4 Life Skills continues, we have a planning meeting with Aquafill, a Coastal Environment Centre incursion for Years 4 and 6 to coincide with World Environment Day, flu shots for staff, the Sydney North Cross Country and of course “duck fever” in Year 3 continues.

Read-a-thon There is a bit of friendly competition going on amongst classes to be the first to have all students return their read-a-thon money. 3JB, 3SN, and 4NE are all in the running. Cake Stall Just a note to save the date, we have a Year 6 fundraising cake stall coming up on 28 June – looking forward to supporting our fundraising efforts.

Warmest regards,

Sports News Sport News The last few weeks have involved a lot of sport as per usual at Newport PS. We took all the PSSA students up to Palm Beach for a team bonding session with the Sandhill Warrior. It was a fantastic day that was enjoyed by both students and staff. Rob spoke to the students about taking the energy from the sand hills and the pride of wearing a Newport jersey onto the field each time you represent Newport. This was evident the following week, with the students performing extremely strongly in both the Boys’ and Girls’ Softball Knockouts and the Boys’ Soccer Knockouts. State Knockouts On Monday, the Girls’ Softball Knockout team travelled to Lisarow to compete in Round 3 of the State Knockout Competition. The girls played extremely well with strong batting and sharp fielding. The girls were in control the entire game and came away winners 18-3. They will now play Harbord in Rd 4. On Thursday the Boys’ Softball Knockout Team played Hornsby North Public School at Rofe Park. Hornsby North had some extremely skillful players however, the boys kept them out of the game with superb fielding. The boys batted really well and their running between the bases was fantastic. The boys won the game 15-4. On Wednesday the Boys’ Soccer Knockout Team played Avalon at Kitchener Park. The boys put in a strong team effort and came away winners 3-1. The boys made the most of their scoring opportunities, moved the ball well and were strong in defence. We wish all our teams the best of luck in the next round. Thank you to all the parent drivers. Local PSSA On Friday Newport played Collaroy Plateau in the local Pittwater PSSA Competition. We experienced mixed success. The students all played well with enthusiasm and demonstrating great sportsmanship and school pride. There will be no PSSA this Friday as it is the Sydney North Cross Country Carnival.

Sydney North Cross Country Carnival On Friday, eight Newport students will travel to Gosford to compete in the Sydney North Cross Country Carnival. The students will compete against the best runners from north of the Harbour Bridge, west to the Hills District and as far north as the Central Coast. We wish them all the best of luck. They should be proud of their achievements to reach a Sydney North Carnival. Thank you to Emma Links who has given up her time to run some training sessions for the students competing.

Music News New Ensemble Times: Great News! We have secured a new rehearsal space in the room on the southern side of the infants toilet block. Senior Band, Junior Band and Stage Band will have all rehearsals in the new Creative Space. String Orchestra will continue to rehearse in the hall. This change will allow the drum kit to be set up permanently and more significantly reduce the need for 7.15am rehearsals. It will also allow flexibility when we reintroduce a third band, which we hope to do next year. New rehearsal times are as follows:

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Creative Space

8am Senior Band 8am Stage Band 7.10 Junior Band

8.15 Senior Band 8am Junior Band

Hall 8.15am Dance 8.15am String Orchestra 8.15am String

Orchestra 8.30am Dance

The guitar stand has been sold however, the Music Committee is still interested in selling a tenor saxophone stand and alto saxophone stand for $20 each. If you are interested please contact Paula Paterson at [email protected]. Assembly Line Report Last Thursday, Tim Seaton who is an Environmental Scientist from the Coastal Environment Centre came to visit Year 6 and he taught us all about the evolution of the Assembly Line and how products ultimately affect our environment. Firstly, we watched a clip on how the Assembly Line evolved. Henry Ford invented the Assembly Line, which worked by dragging the car being worked on along the line of workers. It evolved by Henry Ford assigning roles to

people making it a lot more efficient. The price of each car dropped by $350 as producing cars became a lot quicker. Henry Ford was the inspiration for robots making cars. It was Year 6’s turn to produce something. We were assigned teams to make heart notebooks. There were seven teams: a green, yellow, another yellow team, orange, purple, dark green, another orange team (the people working by themselves) and the lime green team. We set out rows of tables and put 12 people on each. We all had different roles and we learnt that it is a lot harder than it looks and it requires a lot of teamwork. My role was folding the hearts. Next, we had a set time to see how many products our team could produce. Different teams achieved various results. We learnt that being fast was not the only thing that mattered! Completed products were checked by quality control and surprisingly many products didn’t pass quality control. Lastly, we all talked about what we learned and I learnt that it is a lot harder than you think and it requires a lot of teamwork.

In conclusion, I think it was a great experience and it was a lot of fun. It was hard to make the hearts but imagine building cars! Thank you so much Tim for visiting us! Lucy B 6SS
