themanythingswesacrificewhenwehavekids? Many spiritual traditions basedon meditation, prayer and solitudemaintainthatnothingshoulddivertusfromourspiritualpractices—leastofallafamily, whichtakesupsomuchtimeandenergy. In India, one tradition holds that

spiritual development belongs to alaterstageoflife,roughlyafterage50.It isonlyoncewehave lived throughahouseholder stage, bringingupandproviding for our children and livinga worldly life, that we can turn ourattentiontotheinnerworld.Afterourchildren have reached adulthood,we have the privilege of meditatingregularly, andlivingmorequietlyandsimply. Many parents, however, findthat—far from hindering it—bringingup children actively advances theirspiritualdevelopment.Seenintherightway, parenthoodcanbeaspiritualpath, bringing a heightened sense of love, wonderandappreciation.

Natural MindfulnessAfter all, children are such stronglyspiritual beings. They naturally havemanyofthequalitiesthatadultsworktocultivatethroughspiritualdevelopment. For example, children are naturallymindful. They constantly live fully inthepresent, andtheworldisalwaysafantasticallyrealandinterestingplacetothem. As child psychologist ProfessorAlison Gopnik, of the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, puts it, “Babiesandyoungchildrenareactuallymoreconscious and more vividly awareof their external world and internallife than adults are.”They have whatshe calls an, “…infinite capacity forwonder,” that adults only experience
