Here at Natural Health we’ve been advocates of natural and ethical beauty for years, so we’re delighted to see it entering the mainstream, with more and more people considering what they put on their bodies as well as in them. It’s taken time, but word is spreading, and products that look and play the part while also being free from harmful chemicals and ingredients are getting their moment in the spotlight – and that’s exactly what this mini magazine aims to highlight. Showcasing the winners from the 12th Natural Health International Beauty Awards, it’s packed full of the best natural and organic products of the moment and proves that the new generation of green skincare is definitely something we should be investing in.
Every year our awards get bigger and better, and 2017 was no exception. We were seriously impressed with the quality and variety of entrants and our expert panel of judges had a tough task on their hands choosing between such excellent products. Our guide to the natural ingredients that should be on your radar and the nasty chemicals that you need to avoid
VsCLEANWhile the number of chemicals hidden in everyday products may seem a little overwhelming, fear not – there are plenty of natural brands that offer great alternatives to mainstream skincare. Our awards are a testament to this, but someone new to the world of natural beauty may not know where to begin. To help you get started, we’ve highlighted some of the best ingredients to achieve lustrous tresses and glowing skin.
HAIRJojoba oil Jojoba is similar to the oil that hair creates naturally so it's great for relieving dry scalps and can help to balance oil production for those with overproducing glands. It's also a humectant, which means that it will retain moisture in your locks, and is light and non-greasy, leaving hair soft with a natural shine. If you're prone to dry, frizzy tresses, this is an ingredient for you.
Aloe vera pH balanced aloe vera is a key ingredient for promoting hair growth, treating scalp problems such as dandruff and preventing hair loss. Packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, it will rejuvenate and moisturise your mane. The easiest way to use it is to add a small amount to your shampoo or conditioner.
Coconut oil If you have dry hair that's prone to breaking, natural products featuring coconut oil should be high on your shopping list, or you can just use it on its own as a leave-in conditioner. As an emollient, it is very effective at sealing in moisture and actually penetrates the hair shaft, working from the inside out to strengthen fragile and damaged locks.
SKINVitamin E Both a nutrient and antioxidant, vitamin E has been used in skincare for many years, even in products that aren't completely natural, and is most commonly found in sunscreens, anti-ageing moisturisers and skin brighteners. It protects us from the sun and environmental pollution and stops the formation of wrinkles by preventing and repairing damage caused by free radicals. Vitamin E is particularly beneficial for those with dry or irritated skin, as it helps to reduce inflammation and prevent transepidermal water loss, thereby increasing the natural moisture content of the skin. It also enhances the penetration of other compounds into the skin.

ParabensParabens are the most widely used preservative in skincare and cosmetics as they extend shelf life by preventing the growth of fungus, bacteria and other microbes. They became popular as an alternative to formaldehyde, another harmful chemical that has been linked to cancer, but parabens have also been associated with the disease as well as hormone disruption and skin irritation, so keep an eye out for both of these nasties.
SulphatesSulphates are a synthetic ingredient present in a variety of personal care products, from shampoo and toothpaste to body wash and cleansers. They are partially based on sulfur, which can be naturally derived, but for manufacturing purposes it is generally produced using petrolatum – this comes from crude oil and is at risk of being contaminated by cancer-causing chemicals. As for sulphates themselves, they can be harsh on the skin and lead to redness, itching and dryness.
Phthalates
The fact that these chemicals are found not just in cosmetics but also things like household cleaners and food packaging is quite a good indicator that they’re not something you want to be putting on your skin. Over the last few years, phthalates have been linked to asthma, cancer, type 2 diabetes, behavioural problems and fertility issues, so they’re definitely worth avoiding.
Synthetic fragrances Be wary of products that have the words ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ included in the ingredients list. A lot of chemicals can be hidden under those words so you could be unknowingly exposing your skin to a variety of harmful compounds. If the fragrance is naturally derived, this will usually be indicated on the packaging.
A few others to be wary of include silicones (e.g. dimethicone), mineral oil (also known as petroleum) and propylene glycol.
MEANThe skincare and cosmetics industry has been awash with harmful chemicals for decades, and to list them all would be a mammoth task. Some brands will disclose what percentage of their products is natural and organic, but others can come across as clean when they’re actually not. Here are a few of the key ingredients commonly found in beauty products that you should be steering clear of.
Shea butter This wonder ingredient is anything but a one-trick pony and is often considered a superfood for the skin. It's an incredible moisturiser and provides the extra hydration, nutrients and protection that we need in cold and hot weather. Shea butter also works as a natural sunscreen by shielding the skin from ultraviolet radiation and its anti-inflammatory properties make it extremely effective at healing and soothing the skin. As if all of that wasn't good enough, it's thought to be one of the best anti-ageing ingredients too, as it stimulates the production of collagen and contains vitamins A and E which keep the skin supple and halt signs of ageing.
Rose water and rosehip oil Rose water, an ancient homeopathic remedy created by distilling petals in water, is suitable for most skin types thanks to its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and hydrating qualities. If you suffer from a skin condition such as acne, rosacea or eczema then you should definitely be using a product that rose water features prominently in, or you can apply it to affected areas on its own. Another flower-derived component that you should be seeking out is rosehip oil. As a natural source of essential fatty acids omega 3, 6 and 9, it's extremely nourishing and is good for improving tone, texture and pigmentation and relieving sunburn. All hail the rose!
