A scene imprinted on my memory
4
When the environment is meaningful man feels ‘at home”.
The places where we have grown up are such “homes”.
A phenomenology of natural place ought to take these mythologies as its point of departure;
In general any understanding of the natural environment grows out of a primeval experience of nature as a multitude of living “forces”;
A scene imprinted on my memory(cont.)

The marriage between heaven and earth forms the point of departure for the further differentiation of “things”;
The mountain, thus, beiongs to the earth, but it rises towards the sky. It is “high”, it is close to heaven, it is a meeting place where the two basic elements come together. Mountains were therefore considered “centres” through which the axis mundi goes, … a spot where one can pass from one cosmic zone to another;

7
2가지측면• Thing and order: spatial (공간적측면)• Character and light: general atmosphere of a place (일반적분위기측면)
2가지차원• Thing and character: dimensions of the earth ( 지의차원)• Order and light: determined by the sky (하늘에의해결정되는차원)
The basic categories of concrete natural understanding(cont.)
8
Time• The dimension of constancy and change
• Makes space and character parts of a living reality
• At any moment is given as a particular place, as a genius loci
Things
9
The first mode of natural understanding takes the forcesas its point of departure and relates them to concrete natural elements or “things”.

Cosmic order
20
The second mode of natural understanding consists in abstracting a systematic cosmic order from the flux of occurrences.
Character
21
The third mode of natural understanding consists in the definition of the character of natural places, relating them to basic human traits.

Light
25
But nature also comprises a fourth category of phenomena which are less palpable.
Time; temporal rhythms
26
Light is intimately connected with the temporal rhythms(시간적리듬) of nature which form a fifth dimension of understanding.

Complex landscape
28
The romantic, cosmic and classical landscapes are archetypes of natural place.
As types, however, they hardly appear in ‘pure” form, but participate in various kinds of syntheses.

Monotony(단조로움)• Clearly defined hills and mountains which are rarely covered by the
shaggy woods of the North, clearly delimited, imageable natural spaces such as valleys and basins, which appear as individual “worlds”.
• A meaningful order of distinct, individual places.
• Hardly “used” in the Nordic sense of “going into nature”.
