The U.S.A is a highly developed industrial country. Its economy is the most productive in the world. The United States produces and uses more minerals then any other country. The country has ample-reserves of many of the mineral resources demanded by today’s complex economy.

Coal

Coal is America’s most abundant domestic fossil fuel resource. It is now recognized as the cornerstone of the nation’s energy future. The chief coal areas are the Appalachian coal-fields, the coal-fields in Kentucky, Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois. Bituminous, or soft coal, is the most abundant and widespread coal in the United States comes from fields of the Mississippi.

Petroleum

The U.S.A has rich oil -fields in California, Texas, Oklahoma and other regions. Petroleum occurs not only in the great reserves of Texas, Louisiana, California and Alaska, but in nearly thirty other oil-producing states. Exploration and technological advances are continually opening new areas such as the offshore fields of the Gulf coast and California.

Natural gas

Natural gas is found in almost all petroleum-producing states.

Iron ore

Iron ore comes from the regions of Lake Superior, Pittsburgh, Birmingham and Philadelphia areas.

Sand

Stone, sand and gravel occur in every state in commercial quantities.

Gravel

Copper

Copper comes principally from Arizona.

Although the United States is the world’s leading producer of minerals, it relies to an increasing are bauxite, tin and the components of ferro-alloys, for which the country must rely chiefly on import.
