Ejemplo de ello son los tours a través de la red de ríos subterráneos. Los cenotes, que son la puerta de entrada a esta red, son elemento recurrente en la historia, mitos y leyendas de la cultura Maya. Su formación es resultado de la evolución natural desde hace 120 millones de años, cuando la península se encontraba sumergida en los mares.

En ninguna otra parte del mundo hay cenotes y ríos subterráneos en forma tan abundante como en esta parte de la geografía mexicana. Por ello, uno de los tours a través de un laberinto de pasadizos debajo de la tierra, en una gruta de estalactitas y estalacmitas, ha sido galardonado como la mejor expedición ecológica de América y Centroamérica por los World Travel Awards.

One example is a tour through the underground river system. The cenotes, which are the points of entry to this network, are a recurring element in the history, myths and legends of the Mayan culture. Hay impresionantes reservas naturales y áreas protegidas cerca de Cancún, como Sian Ka’an y Yum Balam donde pueden observarse monos, flamingos, tortugas marinas, cocodrilos y muchas especies más.

Se han instalado en medio de la selva diferentes opciones de puentes colgantes y tirolesas, o bien, caminos para conducir vehículos de doble tracción. Existen tours que se contratan desde los hoteles a comunidades mayas que aún conservan sus tradiciones, administran ellas mismas su patrimonio natural e histórico y excursiones a las impresionantes zonas arqueológicas como Tulum, Cobá y Chichén Itzá.

Otra forma de aventura es a través de los parques eco-arqueológicos, donde podrá nadar a través de un río subterráneo, practicar snorkel, ver gran parte de la fauna local y hermosos paisajes o admirar el sistema más grande de caletas y lagunas de la región, entre otros.

There are impressive natural reserves and protected areas near Cancun, such as Sian Ka’an and Yum Balam, where monkeys, flamingos, sea turtles, crocodiles and many other creatures can be observed.

Different kinds of hanging bridges and zip lines have been set up in the middle of the jungle, along with tracks for driving four wheel drive vehicles. There are tours that take visitors from the hotels to Mayan communities that still conserve their traditions and administer their natural and historical patrimony by themselves, and excursions to the impressive archaeological sites such as Tulum, Cobá and Chichén Itzá.

Another kind of adventure can be found in the eco-archaeological parks, where visitors can swim along an underground river, snorkel, observe a large part of the local fauna and beautiful landscapes or admire the largest system of coves and lagoons in the region, among other attractions.
