PSEUDONYM: Each contestant will be randomly assigned a PSEUDONYM by draw once the Technical Meeting of the event has taken place on the first afternoon of the contest. Contestants should avoid disclosing their identity to other participants or event organizers. Participants must fill in the CONTESTANT DATA form and hand it in to the Organizing Committee. IMAGE SUBMISSION AND NUMBER OF PHOTOS TO BE SUBMITTED: The Organizing Committee will set up a room with computers, where each contestant can upload, process and deposit the images they have selected to present for competition. The use of contestants' personal computers is permitted and they can be connected to the competition's wireless network. Each user will have a personalized login and the USER NAME will be identical to their PSEUDONYM. Their assigned password will appear on the paper they are given during the draw made at the Technical Meeting. Each contestant can enter up to three photos for each of the themes, for a total of twelve. All final photos should be delivered as depicted below, not later than 10:00 pm on the fourth day, after which time no other entries can be submitted. IDENTIFICATION OF PHOTOS: Each contestant will have two non-modifiable folders in the computer room: 1. Download, to store all the images which the contestant wishes to work on digitally. 2. Selection, which contains 4 sub-folders with the name of each theme. The contestant will include in each of these up to 3 images they wish to enter in the competition, changing the name assigned to the photo by the camera, as exemplified below: Original name assigned by the camera (example): _DSC01234, to be changed to the Competition name: PSEUDONYM_THEME_# (from 1 to 3), for example: ROBLE_MACRO_#, or AGUAITACAIMAN_PAISAJE_# (Landscape), or TOCORORO_FLORAFAUNA_#, or MARIPOSA_HOMBRENATURA_# (HOMBRENATURA means Man and Nature). TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS FOR THE PREPARATION AND DELIVERY OF THE PHOTOS: FINAL PHOTOS CHARACTERISTICS: The file format to deliver is JPEG; max quality. Original capture can be done in RAW or JPEG. Photos can be in color or in black & white and the preferred color space is RGB. Long side dimensions of the photos should be 4500 px, being the accepted crop ratios 3:2, 2:3, 4:3, 3:4, 1:1 and 16:9 (only for digital panoramas). Image metadata cannot be manipulated, and could be used by the jury to verify authenticity. We recommend the contestants to adjust correct date and time in your camera on the first day of the contest. Do NOT visually stamp the photo with watermarks or the date/time. ABOUT MACROPHOTOGRAPHY AND LANDSCAPE PANORAMAS: Macrophotography implies the use of lenses tagged as “macro” by the manufacturer. It is not a result of extreme cropping. Participants knowledgeable in the use of “stacking” to achieve large depth of field focus in macrophotography can use this technique, always declaring it in the INFORMATION ABOUT THE IMAGES slip. In the Landscape category, it is optional for the contestant to build digital Panoramas based on multiple individual captures, using Photoshop®, Adobe Camera RAW®, Lightroom®, or other programs that allow this procedure. This technique should be declared in the INFORMATION ABOUT THE IMAGES slip when used. PHOTO EDITING: The original image should be subjected to minimal adjustments, in line with the basic development work that is done, for example, to an original RAW file. Contestants using Photoshop®, Adobe Camera RAW®, Lightroom® and other similar development and editing programs can apply: 1. Discreet adjustments of Exposure, and recovery of details in Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks. 2. Discreet adjustments of Contrast, Clarity, Intensity, and Saturation. 3. Removal of Chromatic Aberrations and enabling of Camera/lens Profile corrections. 4. Discreet adjustment of Sharpening, and of Noise reduction. Specs in the sky produced by dirt in the sensor can be removed. No HDR-LDR techniques/tools are to be used. CROPPING AND RESIZING: The jury will accept a re-composition (cropping) of the original image using the aforementioned crop ratios in order to achieve a better equilibrium in contents, and improve the aesthetic projection of the photo. The contestant should take into account that extreme cropping will ect the visual quality of the final image, which can be further degraded once resizing is done to achieve the 4500 pixels in the longer side of the photo. If your camera sensor has an original long-side resolution under 4500 px (below 13.5 Mp), or you perform cropping during processing, you are allowed to resize the photo using Photoshop®, Adobe Camera RAW®, Lightroom®, or other programs. USING FLASH: Because of undesired shadow projections and frequent photo un-natural appearance, the use of direct, indirect, and fill flash is not encouraged, and will remain at the discretion of the participant. COPYRIGHT: All the images entered during the competition, be they prize winners or not, may be used by the Gaviota S.A. Tourist Group for the promotion of their products and services. In this case authorship of the photo must be credited. Images entered during the competition, be they prize winners or not, may not be used for commercial gain by the Gaviota S.A. Tourist Group without previous agreement with their author. PANEL OF JUDGES: The panel of judges will be led by Dr. Jorge Víctor Gavilondo Cowley, and comprise prestigious photographers and specialists in Cuban biodiversity. For the selection of the winning photos, the jury will take into consideration Content; Composition; Technical in the capture; Technical quality (natural look; absence of artifacts [noise, chromatic aberrations, and optical distortions], detail and dynamic range; ect; and Compliance with Contest rules and ethics. Contestants and their companions may not socialize with the members of the judging panel until the decision concerning prizewinners has been made public. PRIZES: There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize for each theme, and one Main Prize. Each member of the jury secretly assigns points (0-5) to each of the anonymous contestant photos submitted to given category. The 3 winner photos per theme will be those who gain the most points. A Main Prize will be awarded to the contestant who wins the most points overall from all categories. For this, points are awarded as follows: 1. 10 points for first place in a given theme. 2. 3 points for second place in a given theme. 3. 1 point for third place in a given theme. The winner of the Main Prize must have won at least one first place in any of the four categories in the competition. If there is no clear overall points winner the judges will vote for the Main Prize winner based on the 1st prize winning photo of each category. After a decision has been reached in all categories, and the Main Prize is assigned, the real names of the contestants will be released to the jury by a member of the Organizing Committee that is not a member of the jury. The decision of the judges will be final. The prizes are personal and non-transferable.
