Nature, do you exist any more?Where are you? You don’t seem as you’d look before!I know your green attire’s torn apart,The sympathy in my heart, I could not impart,Your children’ve been separated from you,Who stood tall, green, divine & true, Sad little squirrel, and the birdie on the rock,Awaiting for its homing flock,Ruthless humans are on a robbing spree,Your precious wealth they’ve looted with glee,I apologize on behalf of the ruthless humanity,And promise to give back your lost beauty, which might last till eternity!

Gone are the days when waste was perceived as sometimes unwanted and useless material. The most important waste perhaps known to mankind is paper waste.
Practicing the 3R’s (REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE) every day is not only important for a healthy environment but also a good method of waste management.
INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION
A key part of waste reduction is “conservation”-using natural resources wisely.
“Reuse” of materials in their original form is practiced instead of throwing them away.
It has been estimated that 60% of the materials that we throw away could be sorted and recycled.
INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION
Indian paper industry is a vast industry comprising more than 157 paper – producing divisions all over India. These 157 functional units together manufacture homemade paper worth around Rs 21 crores and provides employment to approximately 10,000 people.
PAPER RECYCLING:PAPER RECYCLING:PRESENT SCENARIOPRESENT SCENARIO
To make people recognize for protecting, and conserving environment.
To aware the local community about the importance and conservation of trees.
To generate awareness amongst local people that paper is an important resource and can be recycled.
To create awareness among people about the process of paper recycling.
To enlighten the people about the benefits of paper recycling which not only saves trees and minimizes pollution but also reduces the waste problem by utilizing waste material.
To motivate the local people to practice 3R’s ( Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle ).
To develop the sense of commitment among people to protect the environment.
To imbibe among people the essence of environmental values and ethics and live in harmony with nature a God’s gift.
• Paper is one item that most households consume in large quantities.
• By using paper carelessly, we contribute to the depleting forest cover, drastic climate change and water pollution.
• For every ton of paper, the paper industry guzzles up 2.8 tons of dry timber and 24,000 gallons of water, besides electricity and other resources.
• Paper wastage has a negative impact on the environment.
Today, 90% of paper pulp is made of wood. Paper production accounts for about 35% of felled trees, and represents 1.2% of the world’s total economic output. Industrialized paper making has an effect on the environment both upstream and downstream.
Recycling paper reduces this impact.
Two simple steps can go a very long way to help lessen the load of paper production:
Reduce the amount of paper we use. Where paper is needed, switch to products that are certified as environment friendly.
A process of using waste materials into valuable products.
•Paper recycling is the process of recovering waste paper and remaking it into new paper products.
•Paper suitable for recycling is called “scrap paper”.
*Less waste and disposal problem.
*60-70% energy savings.
*Creates more jobs.
*Reduces water pollution by 35%, reduces air pollution by 74%, and eliminates many toxic pollutants.
We together probed the minds of the people of Sector-41, Chandigarh through a questionnaire. We took the sample size of 200. They were very excited and wanted to learn about the recycled paper and its benefits.
PAPER RECYCLING
A learning experience for students.
“An idea that helped to create something good out of nothing”
QUESTIONING:
• This gave a clear insight to the remedial steps which could be put forward to save environment.
I. Which type of waste is generally produced? a) _____________ b) _____________c) _____________ d) _____________
II. What do you do with waste paper?a) Throw in a bin b) Junk dealerc) Burning d) Reuse
III. Do you have a separate bin in which waste paper can be collected?
a) Yes b) No
NAME -AGE -
COLLECTION AND SEGREGATION OF WASTE:
• In green bin waste paper was dumped.
• In red bin food items were dumped.
• In blue bin other non-biodegradable wastes were dumped.
SHREDDING OF WASTE:
• Waste paper like newspaper, notebook pages, copier paper, chart paper etc. was shredded.
PROCESS OF PULP MAKING:
Stage 1:-
• Shredded paper was soaked overnight for 10-12 hours.
Stage 2:-
• Soaked paper was further crushed in pieces.
PROCESS OF PULP MAKING:
Stage 3:-• Pulp was ground into a paste with the help of blender and
the pulp was ready.
PROCESS OF PULP MAKING:
DILUTION OF PULP IN WATER:
• Two mugs of pulp was added in 1 tub of water.
MAKING OF RECYCLED PAPER OF DIFFERENT SIZES:
• Wooden frames with and without sieve of different sizes were taken and muslin cloth was sandwiched between the frames.
DIPPING OF THE FRAMES:• The sandwiched frames were dipped obliquely in a diluted
mixture till the pulp got evenly spread on the frame and extra water was drained off. The frame without sieve was removed.
DRYING AND ROLLING:
•We kept the frames with muslin clothes for drying for a day. After 75% of drying, rolling was done to squeeze excess of water and to make the recycled sheet smooth.
• Finally the recycled sheet was ready to use and to make valuable paper products.
• Poster-making and slogan writing competitions were conducted in school for generating awareness among everyone.
• Project files were made on the various topics-
Importance of trees, recycling of paper, how to reuse paper, save paper etc.
• Workshop was organised for all the teachers and eco-club members regarding the methodology of paper recycling.

PAMPHLET DISTRIBUTION
• Pamphlets were distributed to the local residents of Sector-41 describing the benefits and methodology of paper recycling .
• The school authorities introduced ‘recycling of paper’ as an activity in activity period for the students in which many paper products were prepared by them like folders, envelopes, greeting cards etc.
• Powerpoint presentation was shown to the students describing the methodology of paper recycling and its uses.
POWERPOINT – CUM - DEMONSTRATION
BEST OUT OF WASTE
• We, with the help of other students conducted a rally to make people aware about the importance of recycling paper in order to save trees.
RALLY
• In the end all the participating students took a pledge-
“Let us wake up and do something about the problem, buy recycled paper now before it’s too late.”
PLEDGE
Reuse envelopes.
Put a “No junk mail” sign on your letter box.
Buy recycled paper products wherever possible.
India has one of the world’s most efficient recycling mechanisms. Use the service of raddiwala and fetch money.
Be creative.
Let us earn the blessings of future generations by paper recycling. The problem of paper waste has drawn the attention of local residents of Sector-41 B, Chandigarh. By practicing 3R’s, we can make our environment pollution free and remember:
“Nature provides a free lunch but only if we know that we are the only caretakers of this planet.”
If each child saves one sheet of paper a day then 40,000 trees are saved per year by students alone!
• Exchanging books in a new academic session.
• Fair-cum-exhibition will be organised in the school campus.
We’ve been working on RECYCLING
All the trash we can,
We’ve been working on recycling,
It’s a very simple plan,
Separate your glass and paper,
Separate your plastic and tin,
Take the trash that you have recycled,
To your recycling bin!

We’ve been working on REDUCING
All the trash we can,
We’ve been working on reducing,
It’s a very simple plan,
Don’t go wasting any products,

We’ve been working on REUSING
All the trash we can,
We’ve been working on reusing,
It’s a very simple plan,
If it’s a paper bag you are using,
Don’t use it once, use it twice.
Give old clothes and toys to someone,
To reuse them would be nice!
