Art elements● Line is a mark with greater length than width. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or

diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin.

● Shape is a closed line. Shapes can be geometric, like squares and circles; or organic,

like free-form or natural shapes. Shapes are flat and can express length and width.

● Colour is light reflected off of objects. Colour has three main characteristics: hue

(the name of the colour, such as red, green, blue, etc.), value (how light or dark it

is), and intensity (how bright or dull it is). White is pure light; black is the

absence of light.

Art Principles● Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colours, texture, and

space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design

feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are

similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different

but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central

point and may be similar.

● Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art. ● Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of

elements of design creates unity within the work of art.

Outline of task1. Begin by collecting a range of resources from around the garden, nearby park or beach.

(This is always a great opportunity to go outside for a bit and get some fresh air!) If you don’t have the option to do this you can always use found household objects instead.

2. Only collect items that are already on the ground. Avoid pulling flowers and leaves off plants. Collect items in a bag or basket and return home.

3. Spread your found objects out onto the ground or the table. Have a look at the similarities between the leaves and sticks etc. Which pieces would look good together? How could you show symmetry, pattern and colour coordination using these pieces?

4. Find a spot outside for your nature mandala (eg. garden, yard, front porch – make sure it is a safe place, not on the road or near cars).

5. Then write your answers to the reflection questions in either a workbook or in the ‘Image upload and reflection’ section in the google classroom. Then take a photo of any written work and a photo of your mandala and upload them to your computer. Then go back to the visual arts google classroom and insert the photos to your google doc OR you can email me your work to [email protected].

*If you are unable to upload the photos onto the google classroom, save them to your computer and write your reflection in a workbook. Keep all of your artwork and reflections together and you can hand that into me at a later date.
