    PROJECT REPORT

    1ST

    MONTH

    March-April

I WENT TO R.D. public school betul for taking workshop and prepare a

play on the theme gurukulam based on the gurukul system of

education from ancient times to modern times.

IT was a school with mamoth capacity of 5000+ students in the area of

betul and nearby villages with children having absolute no exposure of

theatre before.First day was a pretty interesting one as I came to terms

first time in life with the school system which is no exception to the

sarkari system one office to another from manager to vice principal

to reception to principal back to reception again and after few hours I

finally on my way to meet the children.I have to choose children from

all the classes and that means ALL. I took auditions of around 3000+

students in two days fort the span 4-5 odd hours for which I think I

should be given a guiness world record or something rather than just

internship but anyways I was a bit low in confidence in first class but

then I regained my composure and as the time progresses I started to

feel a lot more comfortable in facing the children .The rest of the

process gone smoothly with children from lower classes nursery or so

showing much more interest as compared to higher class students. One

primary reason being their exams are going on and some classes have

just finished their exams ,the students were a bit exhausted so I try to

convinece them that we are going to do something different from

their usual studies and it will not be that boring. Some of them

convinced others were made by teachers using their own hitlerish

techniques. So I hav got every kind of children ranging from 5 to

15,there was every possible diversity is present in terms of

height, attitude, attribute everything.I broke them into groups and at

first I decided to avoid children from smaller age group so I called only

    children above class 5th

.Intially I taught them basics of theatre parts of

stage etc ,then trust exercises and working in group.I have got around

70 to 80 odd children and the number keeps fluctuating. Then in the

following days I came on body and voice exercises. And then comes the

play part there are 8 different stories first one being prahlad and

hirnaykashyap, ram ravan the story when ravan was dying and he gave

all his knowledge to rama, then comes the story of krishna and

sudama, follwed by chanakya and chandragupta, then king

vikramaditya, then king bhoj and then modern india title under the

nemr Navjivan. There were plenty of girls involved as compared to

proper female characters , so I decided to do the vikramditya part only

with girls playing male characters and also done characterisation

exercises with them .Before starting the play I gave them improvisation

exercises. That helps them to understand the theme properly and

understand the characters. Each day I start with exercises related to

body movements follwed by breathing and voice exercises. It was

indeed an intriguing one month with them. I learnt a lot from

them.Their creativity was fantastic. There are also tense

movements. Also other teachers complaint about noise and other

factors but I able to connect with children more freely and to be at ease

with them with each passing day,I started to enjoy my work which at

the start seems to be quiet hectic. All in all an experience to remember

forever.I have been with them for almost 23 days from 21st

    march to

    13th

    april .

up and movements. Then breathing and voice exercises. Then different

acting exercise and improvisation related space, time, relationship

Character building, concentration, status etc.The play I have done there

was InspectorMatadeen chand par a satire on police system by

renowned author Harishankar Parsai. I converted it into a play by

adding recent incidents. At first I narrated the theme only to them and

ask them to improvise using their own imagination main emphasis

should be on the body languge. They came up with some interesting

ideas about the story and the characters.

The venue has never seen a play staged before It is quite a

task. But thanks to IPTA members we able to do that.

We used several songs in the play and for the costumes we used

newspapers. The participants gave their full cooperation in every

department. Also helped us in getting costumes and properties. Some

police officers gave their original uniform for the play.

    month

    May-june

Now I want to do a production with children in Ujjain. These were

difficult months as lot of thought process has been put in to what

should be done. Also talks with childrens, their parents and also

government organizations to help financially or by other means like

providing space for rehersal but nothing concrete could be found out.

Then Rang utsav Samiti came to help and Mr. Rajendra Chawda

provided me with the space to work with children .Currently the

workshop is going on and a production based on Ruskin bonds book

Hanuman came to the rescue which is based on the stories of

Ramayana is scheduled around mid july in Ujjain.
