In the Native American language spoken in the area, theoriginal word, “Naukotunk,” is said to have meant “one largetree,” and designated the preferred, shaded fishing spot used bythe area’s first inhabitants.

Like most names in this part of Connecticut, the borough ofNaugatuck has roots in the Indian heritage. Read on, and followthe tour through the early days of this community.

Naugatuck was part of Waterbury for more than 170 yearsbefore residents petitioned to be recognized as a separate town. For many years, Naugatuck’s first, unofficial name was Judd’sMeadows, after Deacon William Judd was given the first divisionof the meadows downstream of what was then Mattatuck (laterchanged to Waterbury). Years later, the region around Judd’s landincluded the land of many other men, who were the firstlandowners.

Religion played a major part in the second name change. By1765, there were enough residents of Judd’s Meadows to holdreligious services during the winter close to their own homes, instead of traveling to Waterbury each Sunday. This “winter priv-ilege” would allow them to have a service in their own communi-ty, from the first of December to the end of March. In 1773, a newecclesiastical society was created and named the Salem Society.Later, the region became know as Salem Bridge.

Finally, some time during the early 1840s, when there were1,730 residents of the region, a petition was submitted to theGeneral Assembly to form a separate town. A post office had

opened in 1834, and the name “Naugatuck” was used, in defer-ence to the river and to avoid confusion with Salem, Conn., inMiddlesex County. In the spring of 1844, the General Assemblyagreed that the region should be incorporated as a distinct town,by the name of Naugatuck.

Now, as to the meaning of “Naugatuck,” Dr. Joseph Andersonoffers this explanation: “It appears in the Paugasuck deed as theestablished designation of the Mattatuck River, it was once themost widely known of all the aboriginal names in the valley.”

This was offered in Dr. Bronson’s “History of Waterbury.”“Naukotunk,” the original form of the word, is said to mean “onelarge tree” and to have been the original name of Humphreysville(now Seymour), which was so named after a large tree, formerlystanding near Rock Rimmon at Seymour.

The same derivation also is given in a letter from StilesFrench, of Northampton, Mass., formerly of Seymour, whoseauthority was Eunice Mauwee. Mr. French says, “She [said] thatthe name Naugatuck meant ‘one big tree’ and was pronouncedby the Indians ‘Naw-ka-tunk,’ This ‘old big tree’ stood aboutwhere the copper works in Seymour now are and afforded theIndians some shade when they came to the Rimmon Falls tofish.”

For those living in Naugatuck today, or for its visitors, thesight of “one large tree” is reminder enough of the borough’shumble beginnings.

– Eileen K. Ehman

It all began with ‘one large tree’

Welcome!Citizen’s News is pleased once again to provide its readers with the

Naugatuck Town Guide. If there’s something you need to know about our borough, this is the place to find it.

It’s been a tumultuous year in Naugatuck: We’ve debated—sometimes cordially, other times not—educational and municipal budgets, open space, artificial turf, school reconfiguration and more.

But what no one debates is the fact that Naugatuck is home to dedicated public servants, benevolent organizations, glorious houses of worship, and proud and decent citizens. And for those reasons, Naugatuck is a great place to live, whether we agree about every issue or not.

It is Citizen’s News’ hope that this guide will help you take advantage of everything this borough has to offer.

We look forward to being your community voice again this year and hope you will keep the Town Guide at your fingertips.

Our best,Callum Borchers, Editor

Dear Friends:

For generations the citizens of Naugatuck have persevered through difficult times. While the economic struggles we

have faced over the past few years have been great, our history provides us hope that through challenge came opportunity.

From the earliest settlers to our current populace, the residents of Naugatuck have endured and ultimately prospered

through significant societal change, world wars and conflict, economic recession and even a depression. Each challenge

has been met with a commitment to hard work, self-sacrifice and the notion that tomorrow will be better than today.

While many development projects throughout the state have been abandoned, Naugatuck’s Renaissance Place remains

very much alive. Much time and effort has been devoted to planning for better economic times and convincing state and

federal officials that Renaissance Place is exactly the type of project worthy of public investment. While market conditions

have changed dramatically since the 2007 referendum, the overall concept of a mixed-use, transit-oriented smart growth

redevelopment of Naugatuck’s urban core remains. Complete remediation of Parcel C and environmental evaluation of the

privately-owned Parcel B is scheduled to be complete by the fall. Saint Mary’s Hospital is currently planning the

construction of a forty thousand (40,000) square foot medical office complex for Downtown Naugatuck. Not content to

simply wait for better days, the Borough, the Naugatuck Economic Development Corporation and Conroy Development

Company have been actively engaged in seeing Renaissance Place to fruition.

In addition, Naugatuck’s industrial park remains an integral part of our tax base. Relocations and expansions continue to

take place despite difficult economic times. Today’s smaller manufacturers use new and emerging technology to make

products sold throughout the world, as the industrial giants that built Naugatuck did years before.

Any discussion of Naugatuck would not be complete without recognizing the contributions from our numerous volunteer

groups. Our civic organizations have remained strong through good times and bad, and provide much needed support to so

many aspects of Borough life. Whether it is our Veterans groups, Garden Club, community service organizations, school

parent groups, musical and theater groups, the Ecumenical Food Bank or a variety of very active sports organizations;

dedicated and determined individuals continue our proud tradition of community service.

Limited resources have forced our government to become leaner and ultimately stronger. Every day, the fine men and

women who work for and on behalf of the Borough do more with less better than anyone in the state. Their contributions

provide all of us, from seniors to students, the environment to work toward our dreams and goals.

As difficult as this “Great Recession” has been on our beloved community, economic indicators provide optimism that

the worst is behind us. While unemployment remains alarmingly high, we are beginning to see an increase in activity in

previously dormant sectors of our economy. Quietly, with an eye toward the future, we have been planning for better days.

While reflection on the past year is currently focused on increasing needs and limited resources, we will one day remember

these times as the foundation for our future. Bad times today are no excuse for not preparing for the future. Together, we

will boldly move Naugatuck forward to a new era of prosperity.
