NAVY RELIEF FUND DRIVE

The 1993 Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society's Annual Call for contributions has begun for the Monterey Area and will last until June 13. This year's goal for the Monterey area is $65,000.

Since its founding in 1904, the NavyMarine Corps Relief Society has been the naval service's own organization for the relief of distress among Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families. _

security number on the check. ''This requireln!nt has been in existence since June 1988, but has not always been enforced by NEX personnel," said Lt. Lisa Yustak, NEX officer-in-charge.

Yustak said the reason for this requirement is that in some cases, the military sponsor may not always be liable for the dependent's bad checks. By requiring the-dependent's social security number on the check, accounting has a method for collecting from the dependent through the Internal Revenue Service.

In Fiscal Year 1992, $2.4 million in checks returned by the banks were written by dependents. Approximately $480 thousand required further collection action.

Uncollectible checks impact all Navy Exchange patrons in that this is a loss to the Navy Exchange System. By reducing these losses, better prices can be passed on to all of us.

Parking spaces surrounding Navy Exchange facilities are often short term parking spaces. If a parking space is marked with yellow paint and a time frame, be aware that security can ticket cars exceeding the time limitation. Remember, brown spaces are open parking spaces and can be used for longer term parking.

AIRSHIPS • ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

The Arts and Entertainment Network will be airing "Airships," episode of "Brute Force: A History of Weapons at

War" on Thursday, June 17 at 7 and 11 p.m.

The program includes segments on the airship "Macon."

Following World War I, the U.S. Navy tested the feasibility of deploying rigid airships as aerial aircraft carriers. The small Sparrowhawk aircraft carried in the underbelly of the airships were used for long range reconnaissance (radar had not yet been invented). The idea was based on the conunercial success of the • German Graf Zeppelins, which were making regular transoceanic flights from Europe to the United States.

The "Macon" was the third and last of the U.S. rigid airships. It crashed off the coast of Big Sur while on a return flight to its hangar at Sunnyvale (now known as Moffett Field).

The remains of the "Macon" were found by the Navy's deep diving manned submersible, the Sea Qiff, in June 1990.

UNDERGROUND GAS TANK FAILS PRECISION LEAK TEST

A 10,000 gallon underground fuel tank was removed from the Navy Exchange Gas Station recently after it failed a precision leak test.

An annual precision leak test was conducted on all three underground fuel tanks - - 10,000 gallon, 15,000 gallon, 20,000 gallon - - at the Navy Exchange last April. Inunediately upon failing the test the tank was taken out of service, emptied and secured, according to Frank Vogl, NPS environmental coordinator.

The removal of this contaminated soil was conducted under the Navy's "Comprehensive Long-Term Environmental Action program for the Navy" (CLEAN).

" This 10,000 gallon underground fuel

some contamination is evident and that a project to decontaminate the soil and/ or water will be required.

"The process is similar to what was done at the pesticide rensate area," said Vogl.

Gardeners of the Old Del Monte Hotel used the pesticide rensate area to store various types of pesticides. The area was excavated and refilled with soil from a certified clean landfill.

tank and all other storage tanks on the campus will eventually be replaced." said Vogl.

" The replacement tanks are more environmently safe and will include new design features such as double walls, leak detection, spill/overflow protection and cathodic protection."

The tank re11Dval contract was awarded by Western Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command.

4TH OF JULY PEBBLE BEACH

The Beach and Tennis Club at Pebble Beach is gearing up for another fantastic Fourth of July celebration, according to Pat Ward, event coordinaor.

Last year over 1,200 people attended and were entertained with the reintroduction of fireworks as well as with many entertainers and community groups who participated.

"This year's event should be even more exciting," Ward said. The theme of the celebration is "Lady Liberty: the Gateway to Freedom."

The event will be showcasing the ethnic diversity which has created the "great melting pot."

"We are looking for volunteers to • participate in any way; dancers and singers who represent this ethnic diversity would be especially welcome," she said. Those who choose to participate would receive free admission to the day's activities. The admission fee is $65.

The celebration is on July 4 from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Volunteers will be scheduled to petform for about one hour each during the program.
