Let’s build the new Regional General Hospital in Navan now There has never been a better time to build the proposed new North East Regional General Hospital in Navan. The availability of an appropriate land bank has been identified; construction costs have reduced greatly & there is a locally based skilled workforce willing and able to carry out the work but who find themselves currently out of work. A plan must now be put in place by Govt to drive forward this project.

Maintaining Services at Our Lady’s HospitalFine Gael have been consistent with our view of keeping a full range of medical and surgical services at Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan until this new hospital is built. It is important that the health services that we need are available for us. Unfortunately over the past 13 years the FF led Govt and the HSE has clearly & deliberately downgraded Our Lady’s Hospital. They have forced patients away from the hospital instead of allowing us full access to it. The following services* are available at Our Lady’s Hospital:

Make vacant building available to Local Community Groups A better use for the vacant Government building on the Kells Road in Navan would be to make it available to all interested local voluntary & community groups. At the moment it has cost the taxpayer some €50,000 to keep the building closed. This does not make sense at all. A common sense approach would be to make the building available to groups for meetings and administrative purposes.Recently in the Dáil, when I suggested this, the Minister in charge, Martin Mansergh replied that the government are

currently debating whether to retain the building or not and were not presently considering accommodating local groups in the facility. This is wrong. I urge all interested community and voluntary groups make their views known to the Minister on making this building available. The building on the Kells Road previously housed the Department of Agriculture and the Navan Probation and Welfare Service team prior to 2007.

Long-awaited opening of M3 motorwayFine Gael Meath West TD Damien English is delighted that the M3 motorway has finally opened. The motorway would make an enormous difference to the lives of thousands of motorists every day of the week. This is probably the most anticipated road opening in Ireland. For the last ten years commuters and motorists in Meath have struggled to get to and from Dublin. What should have been a short journey regularly took a couple of hours. Fianna Fáil’s insistence on imposing two separate tolls along the motorway is ‘ridiculous’ and will deter some drivers from using it, particularly heavy goods vehicles.

Economic benefits must be realisedMeath’s economy will also benefit hugely from the new road. Navan has been an employment blackspot for far too long. The loss of so many jobs at Quinn Insurance, one of the few key employers in the town, has sent shockwaves through the local economy. The lack of a decent road to Dublin has persuaded far too many companies not to invest in Navan or Co. Meath, even though it’s so close to the capital. I now expect the IDA and Enterprise Ireland to double up their efforts to attract new employers into Navan. I have no doubt that local companies will benefit tremendously from the motorway, with positive knock-on effects for the local economy.

Fine Gael Jobs Plan – NewERANewERA is Fine Gael’s determined approach to fixing the economy that is focused on job creation and protection. This is one effective and significant policy that we wish to make known to you ahead of the next General Election. We want to have your backing to form a Government that will have clear strategies in place to guide us out of recession.

NewERA investments will stimulate the construction sector and the wider economy in the face of the recession, supporting just over 105,000 additional jobs in four years. These will be split almost evenly between jobs directly created from the investment spending (construction, engineering etc.) and spin-off jobs from the extra consumer spending and the positive competitiveness effects of the investment programme. The new jobs are likely to be spread evenly between regions and skill levels, and will likely be concentrated in the following areas:

■ Telecoms, civil and structural engineering

■ Plant maintenance and operation

■ Scientific researchers

■ Insulation and home energy appliances

■ Plumbing, electrical work and other construction crafts

■ Software programming and support

■ Forest maintenance and timber processing

■ Digital content production for health, education and Government services

FG’s proposal would have saved households €400 per year. The Bill required the Government to reduce all of its charges to consumers and business by 5%. The Government voted against these savings for you.
