NAVIGATING CHANGE

Rules to Create, Bend, and Maybe Break

Page 2: Navigating change

Let’s Exercise Our CreativityLet’s draw a house, BUT

There are no “rules” about what the house ‘should’ look like.

You have 5 minutes…

Page 3: Navigating change

How Did That Feel?

• Weird, right?

• Well when you don’t have rules….

Page 4: Navigating change

That Exercise Was Us!• Our office was tiny relative to the

overall size of Temple-nine total full time staff

• Only two staff focused on employer relations

• It was a real “make it work” moment!

Page 5: Navigating change

Meanwhile on Campus…• We weren’t trusted or seen as a valued

partner• Individual schools and colleges felt the

need to fill the vacuum• Results: eight other career services

functions with no University-wide coordination

So What Did We Do?

CHANGED EVERYTHING• Since March of 2014, we have:• Changed our reporting structure• Approved to hire nine more people,

completely overhaul our web site and create a new brand

• Charged with leading a campus wide career network

There’s a BIG but…• All of our ducks didn’t fall magically into

line• Recruiting policies were a particular

challenge, because…

There was NOTHING!
