Health& Fitness The Flagship | flagshipnews.com | 06.06.13 | C3 By David Todd The Flagship Managing Editor NORFOLK Fitness is in the air. Although the gym was quiet for the moment, the long mirrors that line the walls paint a vivid picture of physical po- tential just waiting to be seen. Among the as- sorted barbells, BOSU balance trainers, yoga mats and exercise machines sits a determined woman, dedicated to making a positive change for her health and future. That future was simply her dream, but in eight short weeks, it became a reality. Diane Ruhl, a former command master chief for the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), homeported here, who retired after 26 years of military service – now working part-time as a dog walker for The BowMeow, based here – said her life felt like it was on a “road to destruction.” Her weight had reached a limit she had never seen in her lifetime, she said, and to her, it felt like she was losing control of what she was eating. “For the longest time I had wanted to get healthy and fit, and over the last few years, it seemed like it was getting harder and harder for me as I got older, especially my last 10 years or so in the Navy because I spent a lot of time at sea,” she said. “I wasn’t feeling good about myself and I knew that I could do better.” As command master chief, Ruhl said she was oftentimes more focused on her Sail- ors than she was on herself, but once retired, she wanted to achieve a healthier lifestyle by eating right and getting fit. While searching on Facebook one day, she discovered a local training competition called “Fat 2 Fit” and decided to apply. Fat 2 Fit America, the founders of the com- petition, is a non-profit organization that brings awareness and education about health and fit- ness to those who are most at risk – youth and seniors. They do this through their annual “Top Trainer” competition, where eight personal trainers are paired with eight weight loss cli- ents – selected through submission packages, but trained at no cost to the client. The trainer who produces the highest percentage of fat loss for their client over an eight-week training period wins. Ruhl was paired randomly with personal trainer Lacey Lee of Lacey Lee Fitness, based here. When the training was complete and the numbers were tallied, Ruhl walked away as the winner, losing nearly 12 percent of her total body fat, and Lee was crowned as the Season 2 “Top Trainer” for Hampton Roads. “[The competition] is for the ‘Top Trainer,’ but I wanted her to win,” said Lee, “because to me, it’s her winning, not necessarily me.” Ruhl trained every day on a one-on-one basis in Lee’s fitness studio for approximately 45 minutes a day. Those daily, unscripted workout routines eventually evolved into boot camps, group classes and even two-a-day workouts – morning and evening sessions. “Every time I came in, I never knew what was going to happen or what exercises I was going to do,” Ruhl recalled. “I was excited every time because it wasn’t boring to me – it was some- thing new every day to challenge me.” Lee said nutrition played a major role in Ruhl’s road to fitness recovery, and she ad- vised her to keep a daily journal of everything she ate – avoiding certain foods such as starchy carbohydrates in the evening and junk food – and in return, she adapted a healthy habit of eating nutritious foods every few hours. “I think that people don’t realize that nutri- tion is a huge part of the goals being achieved,” said Lee. “You can bust your butt in the gym, but if you’re not eating right, then you’re going to be frustrated and discouraged by the work you do in the gym.” Throughout the training, Ruhl remained fo- cused on her goals, she said, never complain- ing once. But with just a little more than a week left in the competition, the unthinkable happened – she injured herself by tearing her Achilles tendon, an ongoing ailment that had followed her since she played competitive vol- leyball at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Whereas many competitors may have decided to wave the proverbial white flag and give up, Ruhl stayed positive and soldiered on ... con- tinuing her training and finished the competi- tion strong. “For her to stay strong andprevail through the injury saysa lot in general about her,”said Lee. “There’s a lot youcan do with just your upperbody – and getting your heartrate up too! It was good forher emotional and mentalwell-being, because when youhave an injury, it can get youdown … especially when youare active.”

When the competition wasover, Ruhl had reconstructivesurgery to repair her tendon, which her doctor says couldtake anywhere from six monthsto a year to heal fully, but ithasn’t kept her away from thegym. The new lifestyle chang-es she adopted during the com-petition have become a part ofher DNA, and she values thelessons learned throughout ...looking forward to the nextphase, she said.

“It’s the best thing that Ihave ever done in my life,”she said of the competition. “Ithas totally changed the way Ilook at everything, from work-outs to food. I met some reallygreat people – a lot of the cli-ents and trainers – and I got tosee their struggles. All of ushave a different story.”

“Overall, this competi-tion was the jump start thatI needed, the motivation Ineeded,” she continued. “AndI found that motivation inLacey. Every time I walkedin her studio it was like a‘ray of sunshine.’ There wasalways something great thatwas going to happen to me be-cause I always felt wonderfulwhen I walked out. Even if Ileft sweaty or felt totally beatdown, I could still feel myselfchanging … and I’m continu-ing it! I’m on a journey andit’s not going to end.”

The FedEx 400 at Dover InternationalSpeedway, in Delaware, on Sunday may windup being the race that launched comebacks forsome of the sport’s most talented drivers.

After a dismal start to 2013, Tony Stewartcame away with the win on Sunday, breakinga losing skid that stretched back to last July atDaytona.

Stewart’s win came a week after he fin-ished seventh at Charlotte, his best effort ofthe season up to that point. And the three-timeCup champion typically is at his best whensummertime rolls around, and the tracks gethot and slick.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who lost the lead atDover to Stewart with just three laps remain-ing, also appeared poised to put his struggles

of the past season and a half behind him. Inthe past five races, he’s finished fourth at Rich-mond, eighth at Darlington, S.C. and secondat Dover, Del. after posting an average finishof 21.7 for all of last year. In his favor as wellis the schedule, which includes two races onroad courses, his strong suit, between now andAug. 11.

Jeff Gordon also came on strong at the endat Dover to post his second third-place finishin the past three Cup races.

All three are currently outside the Top-10in the points standings, but they’re not out ofthe running for berths in the Chase, especiallywith the wildcard provision that allows thoseinside the Top-20 with race victories a chanceto compete for the championship.

Gordon is 11th in the standings, while Stew-art is 16th and Montoya is 22nd.

As late as the Dover race’s final caution at

Lap 378 for a wreck by Denny Hamlin, noneof the three appeared to have a winning hand.Points leader Jimmie Johnson, going for arecord eighth Dover victory, had the car tobeat. But he jumped race leader Montoya onthe restart and his trip down pit road to servethe penalty left him with a 17th-place finish.Johnson disputed the penalty, saying Montoyadidn’t take off, but NASCAR officials said thecall was simple, since Johnson should havegiven Montoya the lead back.

With Johnson out of the picture, Montoyaheld the top spot until Stewart made his movein the high groove with three laps to go andscored his 48th career Cup victory.

Stewart said in his winner’s press conferencethat one win doesn’t mean his Stewart-HaasRacing team has corrected all the problems thathave plagued the three-car team this season, butit is a sign of better things to come.
