There’s plenty of storylines for the upcoming NBA season -- the new look Lakers, a team in Brooklyn, the Thunder breaking up, etc. But the storyline most overlooked is just how dominant LeBron James is going to be this year. James now has the “no championship” monkey off his back and is more comfortable in Miami than he’s ever been. Put superstar Dwayne Wade and third-wheel Chris Bosh beside LeBron with shooters like Mario Chalmers, Shane Battier, Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis and LeBron is destined for a historic season. LeBron is playing a power point forward type position that redefines traditional bas-ketball. Coach Spoelstra is asking LeBron to take an even more prominent role on the boards as well as facilitating the offense. Look for the guy to average 27/11/8 a night. Just imagine if LeBron is able to average a triple-double. Talk about an incredible season.

Rookie of the YearAnthony Davis

This is going to be a closer race than most people think. The Portland Trailblazer’s have this Damian Lillard kid and he’s pretty good. Lillard is the third player in NBA history to average 20+ points and 7+ assists in his first three games to start of his career. The Bobcat’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and the Wizard’s Bradley Beal will receive some rookie of the year attention as well. But Davis is a star in the mak-ing. Davis has a chance to make one of the All-Defensive teams in his first year in the NBA. I look for the University of Kentucky superstar to average 16 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks a game while shooting over 50% from the field. This isn’t to say that Davis’ team, the New Orleans Hornets, are going to be very good. Because they won’t. But their coach, Monty Williams, is one of the best young coaches in the year and should have his guys competiting game in and game out. Anthony Davis will be the face of the team for years to come.

Coach of the YearGregg Popovich

The San Antonio Spurs are old. They’ve been old for years now. Every year fans and analysts alike think it’s time for them to fade away into the sunset. Every year the Spurs go about their business and continue on a winning path. Last year Popovich led the aging spurs to a 50-16 season in a com-pacted year where the “old” teams were supposed to be at a disadvantage. He was given his second coach of the year award and once the Spurs capture the number one seed in the west again, he’ll win back-to-back Coch of the Year awards. Of course, this won’t come easy. Tyrone Corbin of the Utah Jazz and Marc Jackson of the Warriors will give Pop a run for his money if either of those teams find themselves at a six seed or lower in the playoffs. But neither of those teams seemed poised to make that kind of jump and thus their re-spectie coaches will have to wait for this prestigous award.

Sixth Man of the YearRay Allen

Yes, Jesus Shuttlesworth himself. The traitor. The guy KG deleted from his contact list. One of the most disliked sports figures in Boston since Johnny Damon. But let’s be real, he’s going to dominate off the bench for the Heat. He hasn’t forgot how to run off screens and his jumper is as silky as ever. He’s going to emerge quickly as LeBron’s favorite target. He’s also always going to be on the floor come crunch time.Photo by Keith Allison, Flickr

Most Improved PlayerEric Bledsoe

With Chauncey Billups rehabbing from knee surgery, a door opens for extended minutes for Bledsoe on the floor. Bledsoe is a light-ning quick point guard with a knack of rebounding despite his 6’1 frame. Some analysts will argue that Bledsoe is top 5 athletically in the NBA pound for pound. This year so far Bledsoe is averaging 9 points a game and is shooting just over 52% from the field in just 15 minutes. Bledsoe is also extremely feisty defensively. According to HoopData, he is averaging nearly three steals a game this year per 40 minutes of court time. I look for Clippers’ coach Vinny Del Negro to decrease shooting guard Willie Green’s minutes and use a regu-lar guard rotation of Chris Paul, Jamal Crawford and Eric Bledsoe.
