Dates to Remember
24th January Last Day of Semester 1
25th January First Day of Semester 2
1st February Secondary Parents Meeting
NBIS to C.B.A. ( China Basketball Association) @ Beilun.
The Ningbo Bayi Rockets are our local
basketball team that plays at the highest level
of basketball in China - the C.B.A. They are a
military team and their name ' Bayi Rockets'
comes from the numbers 8 and 1,
representing the date August 1st - the
founding date of The China Peoples
Liberation Army. We were fortunate to be
able to secure tickets for our NBIS. Basketball
Squad and the I.G.C.S.E. Physical Education
group for the C.B.A. match between Ningbo
Bayi Rockets and top of the league club, Xin
Jiang Flying Tigers on Wednesday January
17th.
And what a great experience it was for the NBIS students and staff (Mrs. Miles, Mr. Martin and Mr. Liu).
We left school in a private hire bus at 4.15 and arrived in Beilun in time for us all to enjoy dinner in local
restaurants before making our way to the stadium. Before the 7.30 Tip - Off we watched the teams
warm up, waved at the mascots, enjoyed the cheerleaders' performances and welcomed the players as
they were introduced individually to the crowd.
Basketball matches are played in 4 quarters and after the first 3 periods of time the score was very close.
It was just in the last quarter that the league - leaders stepped up the pace and scored some impressive
baskets to secure a close win with the final score being Ningbo Bayi Rockets 92 - Xin Jiang 104.
Fantastic for our students to have the opportunity to see a high class Chinese sporting event, locally!
Thanks to our school leadership for agreeing that the trip should be subsidised. The students were really
enthusiastic about the experience and are keen to return for another match!
Kung Fu Punctuation
To have some fun and try something new, 2B
has started Kung Fu Punctuation! In this
program, punctuation is divided into 5 levels of
difficulty represented in a pyramid. Each
punctuation mark (and capitalization), is
assigned a Kung Fu style action and noise. Our
goal is to help a climber move down the pyramid
by completing each level, and learning the
increasingly challenging punctuation skills.
Students begin each session by bowing to their
teacher or opponent, and then battling their
way through a sentence. Who will be the first to
master their skills, and help the climber down
the pyramid!?
So … what exactly goes on in Primary PE Classes Years 5 and 6?
Over recent years, the teaching of PE in Primary Schools has changed significantly.
Physical Education might once have been seen as an opportunity to get out in the fresh air, run around
and perhaps play some games. For some children it meant freedom! For others, it could be an
embarrassing nightmare.
Now however, the programme is much more refined than that, designed with very specific educational
goals in mind, and linked carefully to the much wider issues of caring for ourselves and others, and
developing a healthy lifestyle.
At NBIS, we now follow the National Curriculum of England which means that a wide range of skills are
taught and developed through many different sports and activities including invasion games, net/wall
games, striking and fielding games, athletics, gymnastics, and dance.
Individual skill development, health related fitness, team work and co-operation are all components of
the curriculum.
And of course, since many of our students are not first language speakers of English, there is deliberate
and purposeful reinforcement of the language of PE during lessons.
We are delighted that this year we have a Primary PE Specialist – Ms. Julie Miles – to deliver the
programme. Parents are always welcome to come and see what’s happening … so long as you make an
appointment … But remember … You may be asked to skip rope, swing a hoola-hoop or run like the wind!
Literary Magazine Club
We hope you enjoyed the holiday!
In case you missed our heartwarming December issue in which our students wrote letters to Santa and

INTO HIGHER PLACES
Our Chinese Teachers have been working very hard this year, especially to increase their qualifications
and skills in teaching the Chinese Language. This has meant giving up personal time at the weekend and
during holiday times.
It’s great to see them putting in such effort and flourishing as Teachers in our Learning Community.
Two Teachers – Simon Liu and Peach Chen – will also train in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme so
that they are able to lead our students, in future outdoor education activities. Secondary Biology
Teacher, Jason Jeffries, who has a particular interest in this field, will also train with them.
Deputy Principal Robert and I met with the Teachers this week to encourage them in their endeavours
and also to share with them some of the vision for their involvement in the development of the school.
Yearbook 2018
The Yearbook is currently underway but we would like more photos. If parents have any photos of a
class or school based activity taken this year, the Yearbook team would really appreciate them. Please
email to [email protected]
If they are specific class-based pics please specify the class in the subject line, thanks!
Parent Volunteers
The parenting and education of children is a
much more complex business than it used
to be. And none of us, it seems, can do it
alone! We need each other!
That’s why NBIS sees education as a
partnership between school and home, to
nurture and help develop the talents of the
children in our Learning Community.
We all know that school is ‘important.’ But I
sometimes wonder if parents really grasp
the impact they themselves can have on
school life, simply by volunteering some time in school.
In the UK, USA and Australia, Parent Volunteering is NORMAL! And recently, there has been a massive
increase in the number of parents offering their services in schools. Why is that? Well … it comes down
to school performance. In the USA, for example, it has been found that parental involvement:
Increases student achievement including higher test scores and grades. Promotes positive self-esteem. Creates positive behavior. Impacts attendance. Improves graduation success.
Another benefit – especially in a school like NBIS - is an increased appreciation for cultural diversity when parents from other backgrounds work with the class. Parental involvement:
Develops role model relationships. Exposes students to cultural diversity. Creates opportunities for children to communicate with other adults. Allows the teacher to work individually with students having difficulties. Broadens career awareness and real world connections to the curriculum from parents
employed in different occupations.
As Principal, I’d love to see parents volunteering in our school on a regular basis, helping us build the kind of community which recognizes that we need each other and benefit from the sharing of our time and talents.
What can I do to help?
There are too many possibilities to list … here are just a few examples:
act as a general classroom helper
mentor or tutor students
help children with special needs
volunteer in our school computer lab
help organize, cater, or work at fundraising activities such as bake sales or car washes
act as a lunchroom or playground monitor
help to plan and chaperone in-school events (dances, proms, or graduation ceremonies)
organize or assist with a specific club or interest group (if you have an interest in an activity that
isn't currently available to students, offer to help get a group started — for example, a
photography club or cycling team)
assist coaches and gym teachers with sports and fitness programmes
work as a library assistant or offer to help with story time or reading assistance in the school
library or classroom
sew costumes or build sets for theatrical and musical productions
work with the school band or coach music students individually
help out with visual art and crafts courses and projects
hold a workshop for students in business, finance, trade or technical programmes
spend some time with a specific club or interest group
volunteer to speak in the classroom or at a career day, if you have a field of expertise that you'd
like to share, or a personal story that would inspire young people
supervise or judge experiments at a science fair
We can tailor your involvement to your time and
needs … from a weekly regular slot, to a one-off visit
to present a workshop! No problem! It’s just great
if you can come! And we will help you with any
practical aspects of your involvement.
What should I do next?
Just copy and fill out the form below and send it to me by January 26. Email: [email protected]
In the subject line, write PV. We’ll then be in touch with you after the holiday to make some definite
arrangements! Simple as that!

Thinking Future Food
At NBIS we have a dedicated committee of
Teachers who give their time to trouble-
shooting food service issues, finding solutions
and coming up with creative, feasible ideas to
improve the NBIS Menu.
Their work sometimes includes teaching the
chef how to prepare new dishes and
recommending the purchase of equipment for
the efficient preparation of food.
We’re already thinking about options for next year! Thanks to Sarah NB, Celeste and Megan for their
work!
