  • Hello to all residents.

    Recently your local Safer NeighbourhoodsTeam along with local residents held aNeighbourhood Panel meeting. The reason for this meeting was to discuss anyissues that local residents may have and to setthree priorities for the police or local council toaction.

    As a result of this meeting the followingpriorities have been set;

    1. Street drinkers on the corner of Northcote Road

    2. Reducing the amount of cycle thefts in thearea of Highfield and Portswood.

    3. Continue Operation Batcombe Patrols educating and dealing with those studentswho engage in alcohol fuelled rowdy andinconsiderate behaviour as they return totheir accommodation from late nightlicensed premises.

    As a result of these priorities being set, thepolice along with its partner agencies andhelp from the local residents will put in placeactions to try and deal with the issues set bythe panel meeting over the next three months.

    Please wait for the next SaferNeighbourhoods Team newsletter to see whathas been done to tackle these issues.

    If there are any issues that you feel the police, council can help with or you would like toattend the next Panel meeting which will beheld on 29th July 2010 at 7pm SwaythlingNeighbourhood centre at the top end ofBroadlands road or just have something toraise then please contact myself or Raf([email protected]) on thedetails below.

    Neighbourhood Watch Update

    Hampton Park ProjectHampton Park is an area covered and policedfrom Portswood Police Station. It has adedicated Safer Neighbourhoods Teamconsisting of, two Police Officers and a PoliceCommunity Support Officer. This teamconducts Hi-Visibility patrols, community reassurance and deals with Anti SocialBehaviour in the area.

    At the January Neighbourhood PanelMeeting, Hampton Park was recognised as apriority for the SNT team. What this means isthat the local Police along with the Council willlook at ways to improve quality of life forresidents who live in the area and to tackleAnti Social Behaviour problems.

    In order to do this the Safer NeighbourhoodsTeam had to find out what the core issueswere that the residents face everyday andwith their help try to put in measures whichwould help tackle these issues.

    To do this, three meetings were held overthree days in which every resident inHampton Park was invited. The point of thesemeetings was to give the residents thechance to say how it really is to live in the areaand what issues they face. To do it this waygave the Safer Neighbourhoods Team theopportunity to listen to the residents and gainan accurate portrait of the area and prioritiseissues.

    The three priorities for the area are as follows;1 Cut Ways to the rear of properties and

    fly tipping.2 Anti Social Behaviour.3 Criminal Damage.

    With the priorities being set the SaferNeighbourhood Team along with its partneragencies have now completed work in thearea that has looked at clearing the Cut Waysand installing bollards to prevent further flytipping. Extra patrols have been conductedto tackle Anti Social Behaviour and reduceCriminal damage.

    For three days the Neighbourhood Wardenscleared varying amounts of rubbish, rubbleand other fly tipping. Over these days it wasestimated that nearly 9 ? tonnes was clearedfrom the cut ways by hand and removed tothe tip at Marchwood. To try and prevent thisfrom happening again, at the end of each cutway a bollard was placed. Each bollard hasa combination lock that the residents canobtain to gain access. It is now theresponsibility of the residents to ensure thesebollards are kept in place and to report anyfurther fly tipping.

    Anti Social Behaviour and Criminal Damagehave been reduced in the area after an initialrise in complaints. It is believed that the risein complaints is due to resident awareness. The number of complaints has now reducedand the Safer Neighbourhoods Team willcontinue to address these priorities.

    This has been the combination of some hardwork over a three month period and the workwill continue with new ideas and projects setfor the future.
