December 2004 (Continued on Page 9) North Carolina Bicycle Club, Inc. Most cyclists think of De- cember as the dead center of the off-season; a good time to relax, enjoy tele- vised sports, and probably gain weight. It’s good to take a break and reflect on what you’ve accomplished, and contemplate what you still hope to do. I find my term as club president coming to its conclusion. I’m very pleased with some of the new blood in the club, especially Zonda Hill- man and Brandon Brown . Zonda’s done a tireless job publishing the newsletter each month, and Bran- don’s been helping with the web site, club meet- ings, rallies, and almost everything else. I’m also happy that the usual sus- pects continue make such a difference, such as Adrian Hands (Spring Rally, forums, club meetings), Henri Thomas (treasurer, rallies), Alan Johnson (membership, mailing la- bels), and Carol Schroeder (rallies). Some other folks work more behind the scenes but make contribu- tions just as significant, such as Smith Doss (ride calendar), Tom Sheffield (web site, century calen- dar), Bruce Rosar (education) and Steve Goodridge (advocacy). There are others as well, but I hope you’re realizing that a lot of people put forth a lot effort to make the club what it is. Please take the effort to thank them when you have the chance. (When might that be? See the Christmas party topic below and page 7 for more details). All that being said, there’s still things I hope we can make better progress on, and I still believe the best way to achieve that is by many people doing a few things rather than a few people doing most things. If you’re reading this mes- sage then you have more than a passing interest in the club. I encourage you (yes, You) to find a way to help make the NCBC the kind of home that cyclists are naturally drawn to. You can do this by helping with events, coming to meetings, or simply help- ing other cyclists and en- couraging them to likewise help others. Speaking of meetings, the NCBC Christmas Party will be Friday, December 3 at Henri Thomas home. By annual tradition, Alan Johnson will have his not- to-be missed Christmas brew (warning: 9% alcohol content). There’s a good chance Jack Powell might show up with his guitar, and there’s always a good time to be had. We’ll be electing new club officers, so this is an excellent time to come share your thoughts about what you’d like the NCBC to be doing (and relatedly, what you’d like to be doing with the NCBC). There are still cycling events to put on the calen- dar, such as the New Year’s Day metric century – always a good way to start the New Year. We’ll be having a variety of meeting topics in 2005, such as cycling nutrition, cycling the Virginia Creeper and New River trails, Cy- cling NC, and more. I wel- come your suggestions, and I really hope you’ll take the time to come en- joy the gatherings. (Read about Rich Giroux’s trave- logue in November and you’ll wish you had been there.) See page 5. It’s been a good year, in spite of a record number of events being rained out. (Who would have thought that both Bikefest and Bridge to Bridge would get cancelled due to hurri- canes?). I don’t know about you, but as a teenager I always had a fantasy of taking off on a motorcycle and touring the country. This was no doubt inspired by the movie Easy Rider, and my own teenage wanderlust. Since then that fantasy has evolved to touring the countryside by bicycle. Bicycling is just more inti-mate with the people you meet and the places you visit. As your pace slows down you see more, and understand more. Life is richer. I was thinking about all this as Rich Giroux pre-sented his slides from his cycling trip in Ireland at the November NCBC meeting. Living in the triangle, I for-get that places can be so rural, so old, and so green. Rich captured much more

than just the emerald countryside. He caught the nuances of the various B and B’s where he stayed, the owners he met, and even the food he ate. Rich is a good photographer and has an eye for detail. His slides were a mix of landscapes, architecture shots, portraits, and vaca-tion snapshots, and thinks that simply caught his at-tention. Perhaps most enticing was Rich’s method of touring. He had hotel reservations for only his first night, and then after that wandered between towns and found a room at a Bed and Breakfast when he was ready to stop for the day. No real itinerary other than where his interest took him, and the need to ulti-mately catch a return

flight. He’d eat in a local pub, and sometimes take side trips into the country-side to explore a little fur-ther. The roads were sur-prisingly narrow, and the hills were surprisingly steep (although most his route was mostly flat, and only crossed mountain ridges once or twice). Not so surprising, the locals were extremely friendly, even as motorists. Rich cycled by idyllic villages, stunning castle ruins, and the occasional sheep herd. And, amazingly, he was rained on only once. Rich packed his bike by simply wrapping it in a large, clear plastic bag. This made the contents obvious, and bike arrived at all destinations un-scathed. It also made packing and unpacking

simple, and made it easy to stow the bag for later use. I’ve heard other folks give good reports from using the same technique. Rich carried a small, de-tailed map book that he used to plan his routes each day. There were twelve other folks at the meeting, and they seemed to be enjoy-ing the show as much as I was. Many had come to Sammy’s early to eat, meet, and enjoy a beer. Afterwards I was ready to pack up my bike and fly to Ireland, my old touring fan-tasy having been thor-oughly enticed. That’s something I love about club meetings – you come away with new ideas and inspirations. Rich’s cycling tour show was no excep-tion.

with these observations from the Blue Ridge Brutal 100: 1. Expect some ridicule if you show up for a century

wearing blue jeans 2. Don’t tuck your jersey into your cycling shorts; it just looks stupid (except, perhaps, for the following)

3. Know when your cycling shorts are worn enough that they’ve become trans-parent So have a good off-season.

[WAIVER: In consideration of your allowing me to participate in North Carolina Bicycle Club rides and events, I, intending to be legally bound, release and discharge any and all claims for damages for death, personal injury or property damage, which I may have, or which may hereafter accrue to me, as a result of my participation in club rides and events.
