Music was by the San Jacinto North jazz trio, and a video history of the chamber was prepared by Wayne Oquin, John Lewis and Chris Goss of the Ga- lena Park ISD. Wayne Oquin was the keynote speaker, tracing the history of the chamber since its founding in 1977 with Dr. Ed Lehr as its first chairman. The program concluded with remarks from outgo- ing chair Lucia Bates about the accomplish- ments of her year, and this was followed by remarks from the incoming new chairman, Adam Lund. NORTH SHORE – Gary McHenry, chairman of the Speakers Committee of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, made a presenta- tion to the Rotarians on January 19 at their week- ly luncheon. McHenry covered the usual fact, such as 33,000 volunteers, $430 million in scholarships since the be- ginning, today’s scholar- ships of $20,000 for 4 years, and more. This year’s show runs for 21 days, and starts Tuesday, March 7th. He mentioned the first performer was Gene Autry. The show is basically for and about ag- riculture, and students that are in that field. But the talk took an in- teresting twist, when McHenry told about bull riding, one of the most pop- ular events. He said that a rider only had to stay on the bull for up to 8 seconds, and in a full 20 day show could earn $56,000. To better understand bull riding, McHenry dressed Rotarians in clos- tumes and acted out a bull riding sequence. Imagine a clown, a cowboy rider, a barrel tender, a bull, and a matador type, and the club watched their moves, and listened to an explanation.

Alfaro said that federalsupport for the project end-ed in 2016, and now allfunding is from privatesources. On March 2 of thisyear, BAHS will hold a“Main Event: to raise mon-ey. It will be at the Sylvan

Beach Pavilion, and be a“roast & toast” of Fred Na-varre. It is expected to draw300 to 400 attendees, andAlfaro encouraged Rotari-

Crosby Subway robbed,suspect eludes deputies

CROSBY – The SubwayRestaurant in CrosbyTown Center was robbedMonday morning, Jan. 30,the suspect remains atlarge.

A call from a neighbor-ing shop operator at 5:55a.m. to the Harris CountySheriff’s Office was madeto report a robbery.

The caller reported thata man in a black hoodiewearing black pants andb r a n d i s h i n g a p i s t o lwalked up to the restau-rant operator, a womanholding a four-year-old andforced her inside the res-taurant the instant thatshe unlocked the door.

In about three minutes, two Sheriff’s patrol unitswere at the front door andwere joined there in twomore minutes by anotherpair. A minute later anoth-

er patrol car made thescene.

The suspect forced thewoman to open the cashregister. He took the con-tents, he insisted that sheopen the safe but she hadno access to the safe. Hetook the woman’s cellphone by point of pistol.

When deputies arrivedoutside, the suspect fledout the back door on foot. The operator and her four-year-old were apparentlynot physically injured.

This is the second rob-bery in as many weeks bysomeone described asabout 5’7”, thin build, me-dium brown completionblack male, believed to bebetween 30 and 35 yearsold.

It seems a donut shop onNorth Main in the vicinityof Crosby Town Center had

also been a robbery victimat about the same time ofday.

Likewise, within thattime frame, a woman hadher car window smashedat the Crosby Post Officeand the contents taken asshe went to her Post OfficeBox. All of these incidentshave in common that nosuspect vehicle is associat-ed with these incidents. Itmight be presumed thatthe suspect does not livefar from where the inci-dent took place.

Harris County Sheriff’sOffice considers this sus-pect armed and dangerous. The robbery division isseeking information thatcould lead to the arrest ofthis perpetrator. Anyonewith information shouldcall 713-274-9200.

Governor Abbott:Property andFranchise TaxReduction

AUSTIN – GovernorGreg Abbott today listedproperty and franchisetax reduction as legisla-tive priorities in his Stateof the State address. Low-tax advocates were quickto offer praise for theGovernor’s call to action:

On Property TaxReduction:

“Americans for Pros-perity is applaudingGovernor Abbott forpledging to supportproperty tax reform herein Texas. Currently, toomany hard-workingfamilies in the state areliterally being taxed outof their homes and that issimply unacceptable.Lower taxes have playedan essential part inTexas’ role as an econom-ic leader in the nation.Burdening Texas familieswith higher taxes is not asensible solution for ourstate budget. We areproud to stand alongsideGovernor Abbott in hiseffort to give taxpayersgreater control over risingproperty tax rates.”

Jerome Greener, StateDirector, Americans forProsperity-Texas

“There is a revoltbrewing in Texas oversoaring property tax billsthat are neither realisticnor sustainable. In 2015,Texas’ 4,171 local govern-ments walloped home-owners and businesses formore than $52 billion inproperty taxes, or about$1,900 for every man, woman, and child in theLone Star State. Asmammoth an amount asthat is, trends suggestthat the burden is likelyto get heftier still, withtax levies historicallyoutpacing standardeconomic measures by awide margin. GovernorAbbott’s call for structur-al property tax reformcould not have come at amore urgent time. Texanseverywhere are strug-gling to cope with therelentless onslaught oflocal property taxes, andsystemic change isneeded to secure neededand lasting relief.”

James Quintero,Director, Center for LocalGovernance-Texas PublicPolicy Foundation

On Franchise TaxReduction:

“We are pleased withthe Governor’s commit-ment to continue workingto eliminate the franchisetax. The compliance costplus payment makes thistax one of the mostburdensome taxes Texasbusinesses have tocontend with.”

Talmadge Heflin,Director, Center for FiscalPolicy-Texas Public PolicyFoundation

“Governor Abbott's callto ultimately phase outthe franchise tax is anapproach that the statemust continue to pursue. The franchise tax wascreated in 2006 to helplower property taxes andto keep the school financesystem out of court, yet ithas failed in both of thoseobjectives. Texas hasslipped in nationalrankings for tax policyand economic outlook, inpart, because of it.Economic projectionsshow that eliminating thefranchise tax wouldproduce 41,500 net newjobs, $3.4 billion in netnew investment, and $9.8billion in new personaldisposable income.Eliminating the franchisetax would make Texasone of only four stateswithout a corporateincome tax or grossreceipts-style businesstax, which would be aboon for investment, jobcreation, and economicgrowth.”

Washington, D.C. –January 30, 2017 –Congresswoman SheilaJackson Lee, a seniormember of the HouseHomeland Security andJudiciary Committeestoday released thefollowing statement afterintroducing H.R. 735, theUniversal Security ofAmerican Values Act of2017 (USA Values Act),which will invalidate thediscriminatory ExecutiveOrder issued by thePresident banningvisitors and refugees fromcertain countries fromentering the UnitedStates simply becausethey exercise their rightto religious liberty byadherence to the Muslimfaith:

“The United States ofAmerica is a countryfounded by personsescaping religiouspersecution and freedomof worship has been abedrock national valuesince the Pilgrims landedon Plymouth Rock in1620. It is no coincidencethat the first of theamendments comprisingthe Bill of Rights protectsinviolate the free exerciseof religion

“Neither the Constitu-tion nor the First Amend-ment recognizes anexception to the freeexercise of religion in thecase of persons of theMuslim faith. Theexecutive order issued bythe President last Fridayis discriminatory Execu-tive Order because it hasthe effect and intent ofexcluding from theUnited States thosepersons from predomi-nately Muslim countrieswhose religious faith isMuslim. This is the typeof invidious discrimina-tion that our Constitu-tion, laws, customs, andtraditions do not counte-nance.

“That is why I haveintroduced H.R. 735, theUniversal Security ofAmerican Values Act of2017 (USA Values Act of2017), which declares theExecutive Order issuedby the President onJanuary 27, 2017 to benull and void and of noforce and legal effect. Inaddition, USA Values Act

Washington, DC – U.S.Rep. Brian Babin (TX-36),who has been a leadingcritic of America’s UnitedNations (UN)-led refugeeresettlement program, issued the followingstatement today insupport of PresidentTrump’s executive orderon extreme vetting:

“I commend PresidentTrump for delivering onhis campaign pledge toput a common-sensepause on a broken refugeeprogram and immigrationsystem that has seriousnational security gapsand is in desperate needof repair.

“By temporarilyrestricting entry into theUnited States fromseveral nations that wereestablished as terroristhotspots by the ObamaAdministration, Presi-dent Trump is doingexactly what he promisedthe American people hewould do – and that’s puttheir safety, security andwell-being first.

“This is not a radicalidea. In fact, polls show amajority of Americanssupport such a plan. It isalso not a new idea.President Obama did thesame thing in 2011 bysuspending Iraqi refugeeadmissions for sixmonths. The TrumpAdministration hassimply stepped up thescreening of those

AUSTIN — Gov. GregAbbott has stepped up thepressure on Travis Coun-ty Sheriff Sally Hernandezto participate in immigra-tion enforcement, warningthat she could lose statefunding if she refuses.

In a Jan. 23 letter, Ab-bott urged the sheriff toreverse her policy directive“forbidding Travis CountySheriff ’s Office employeesfrom cooperating with U.S.Immigration and CustomsEnforcement detainer re-quests.”

Failure to reverse herdirective would put in jeop-ardy millions of dollars infunding from the gover-nor’s office to Travis Coun-ty, Abbott warned. Abbottmentioned that last year,he conditioned all Crimi-nal Justice Grant fundsfrom his office to countieson their enforcement offederal immigration law.Furthermore, Abbott said,he is committed to signinglegislation that bans sanc-tuary cities throughout thestate of Texas.

Sheriff Hernandez post-ed a news release in reac-tion to the governor’sletter, saying: “I respect thejob of our state leaders, butI will not allow fear andmisinformation to be myguiding principles as aleader sworn to protectthis community. I am fol-lowing all state and feder-al laws, and upholdingconstitutional rights to dueprocess for all in our crim-inal justice system. Ourcommunity is safer whenpeople can report crimeswithout fear of deporta-tion. I trust the court sys-tem and our judges toassess the risks and setappropriate bonds and con-ditions for all who are in-carcerated. The voters, who elected state leadersand me, expect and de-serve a collaborative effortto come up with solutionsto this very complex issue. That is precisely what I’mcommitted to.”

“As I have been sayingfor nearly two years, therefugee resettlementprogram poses a clear andpresent danger to theAmerican people. Wewere told by PresidentObama’s own DHS, FBIand DNI Directors thatU.S. intelligence officialscannot properly vet orscreen refugees comingfrom Syria and otherterrorist hot spots. Wehave seen the deadlyconsequences in Europeas ISIS has alreadysuccessfully infiltrated itsrefugee population. Whyrepeat the same mistakeshere?

“As a compassionateChristian, I believe wecan and should helpdisplaced refugees bycaring for them in safezones near their owncountries. In fact, for thecost of bringing onerefugee into America, wecan help at least twelverefugees in safe zones.

“The President’sexecutive order willensure our U.S. intelli-gence agencies have timeto strengthen the vettingsystem and close thisgaping hole in ournational security. Presi-dent Trump has my fullsupport.”

the Third District on Jan.27 ruled unanimously infavor of the defendant, UTSystem Chancellor Will-iam H. Raven, in a lawsuitbrought by Hall.

Hall sued over McRa-ven’s refusal to grant Hallcomplete access to recordscontaining student-admis-sions information. McRa-ven had the legal standingto deny Hall’s requests forcertain information, thecourt ruled.

The underlying disputebegan in 2013, when Hallraised concerns about po-tential improprieties in theadmissions process of UTAustin and requested in-formation to conduct hisown investigation.

Hall was appointed tothe board of regents bythen-Gov. Rick Perry in2011. Hall’s term of officeends in February.

“ProtectingReligious Liberty”

OPINIONBy CongresswomanSheila Jackson Lee

prohibits the issuance orimplementation of anyExecutive Order that hasthe effect of abridgingreligious liberty or any ofthe privileges andimmunities guaranteedunder the Constitution orlaws of the United States.

“As Americans we arebest when we are true tothe values we hold dear, beginning with fidelity tothe Constitution and thelaws of the United States. The executive order, which represents thePresident’s attempt tomake good on his pledgeto impose a ban onMuslims from enteringour country, is a radicaldeparture from thevalues, principles, andpractices that heretoforehave made America theenvy of the world.

“Former presidentBarack Obama ‘funda-mentally disagrees withthe notion of discriminat-ing against individualsbecause of their faith andreligion.’ The formerpresident is right, thecurrent president iswrong and I call upon thePresident to rescind thisdiscriminatory orderimmediately.”

“Arbitrarily excludingMuslim visitors to ourcountry will not make ussafer and makes amockery of our reputationas the world’s mostwelcoming nation. TheUSA Values Act, whichaffirms the nation’s corevalues, complements the‘Statute of Liberty ValuesAct’ (SOLVE Act), whichbars ethnic and religiousdiscrimination againstrefugees that was alsointroduced today by mycolleague, Congresswom-an Zoe Lofgren of Califor-nia, and sponsored by meand more than 125Members of the House.”

There was a young manwho had been diagnosedwith a terminal illnessand had been given threemonths to live. So as hewas getting his things ‘inorder,’ he contacted hisPriest and had him cometo his house to discuss cer-tain aspects of his finalwishes.

He told him whichsongs he wanted sung atthe service, what scrip-tures he would like read, and what outfit he want-ed to be buried in.

Everything was in or-der and the Priest waspreparing to leave whenthe young man suddenlyremembered somethingvery important to him.

“There’s one morething,” he said excitedly.

“What’s that?” came thePriest’s reply.

“This is very impor-tant,” the young man con-tinued.

“I want to be buriedwith a fork in my righthand.”

The Priest stood look-ing at the young man, notknowing quite what to say.

“That surprises you, doesn’t it?” the young manasked.

“Well, to be honest, I’mpuzzled by the request,”said the Priest.

The young man ex-plained. “My grandmotheronce told me this story, and from that time on Ihave always tried to passalong its message to thoseI love and those who arein need of encouragement.

In all my years of at-tending socials and din-ners, I always rememberthat when the dishes ofthe main course were be-ing cleared, someonewould inevitably lean overand say,

“Keep your fork”.”

AUSTIN, TX- January31, 2017 – Governor GregAbbott delivered his bien-nial State of the State Ad-dress.

"Governor Abbott saidthat 'the only good tax is adead tax.' But he failed tostand up to the disastrousproposed Trump tax onMexican imports that willincrease costs for Texasconsumers and devastatelocal businesses," saidState Representative AnaHernandez. "As Texas'slargest trading partner, weshould be working to im-

Diamond Jim: "Do you havea good story to share?"

“It was my favorite partbecause I knew that some-thing better was coming….like velvety chocolatecake or deep-dish applepie. Something wonderful, and with substance! So, Ijust want people to see methere in that casket witha fork in my hand and Iwant them to wonder‘What’s with the fork?’”

The man went on,“Then I want you to tellthem: ‘Keep your fork …the best is yet to come.’”

The Priest’s eyes welledup with tears of joy as hehugged the young mangood-bye. He knew thiswould be one of the lasttimes he would see himbefore his death.

But, he also knew thatthe young man had a bet-ter grasp of heaven thanhe did. He had a bettergrasp of what heavenwould be like than manypeople twice his age, withtwice as much experienceand knowledge.

He KNEW that some-thing better was coming.

At the funeral peoplewere walking by the youngman’s casket and they sawthe suit he was wearingand the fork placed in hisright hand. Over and over, the Priest heard the ques-tion, “What’s with thefork?” And over and overhe smiled.

During his message, thePriest told the people ofthe conversation he hadwith the young man short-ly before he died. He alsotold them about the forkand about what it symbol-ized to him.

He told the people howhe could not stop thinkingabout the fork and toldthem that they probablywould not be able to stopthinking about it either.

He was right. So thenext time you reach downfor your fork let it remindyou, ever so gently, thatthe best is yet to come.

Friends are a very rarejewel, indeed.

They make you smileand encourage you to suc-ceed.

Cherish the time youhave, and the memoriesyou share. Being friendswith someone is not an op-portunity, but a sweet re-sponsibility.

Share this story witheveryone you consider asa FRIEND… and I’ll betthis will be somethingthey will remember, everytime they pick up a fork!

And just remember …keep your fork!

The BEST is yet to come!A personal note from

Diamond Jim: “AlthoughI did not write this story, the thought of cherishingthe relationships of fami-ly and friends is very nearand dear to my heart. Please, take a momentthis week to be loving tosomeone who isn’t expect-ing it…be kind to someonewho perhaps does not de-serve it…and be generousto someone who is in need. For giving (and forgiving)is its own reward. I wishyou Peace my friends” Di-amond Jim
