A nurse has spoken out about the disheartening working conditions affecting nurses at Auckland District Health Board.
The nurse, who wants to remain anonymous, has revealed nurses do not have the time to listen to oncology patients with the ward short five full-time equivalent nurses, have a lack of basic equipment such as thermometers and pulse oximeters, and are struggling with overwhelming nurse shortages and a dramatic drop in the number of health care assistants.
“Probably the biggest stress of all is as nurses we simply do not have the time to actually sit
down with a patient when we see we need to, and actually hear what they need to tell us,” the nurse said.
“These (oncology) patients are fighting for their lives and we are not able to fully support this fight as we flit in and out and do just the basic tasks – this is really getting to just so many nurses not being able to fulfil our caring role.”
The revelations come after a New Zealand Nurses Organisation survey revealed Auckland DHB has shortages of more than 120 Registered Nurses, including 48 nurses at Starship Children’s Hospital.
NZNO organiser Craig Muir said nurses are overworked, stressed and morale was low, resulting in dangerous working conditions.
Mr Muir said a DHB budget blowout of $4 million had slowed the recruiting process, with new employees delayed up to three months in starting work, while there was also a non-replacement policy on all staff on annual or sick leave, and casual staff numbers have been dramatically reduced.
He said the DHB could resolve the situation by prioritising staff levels and patient care.
“DHBs and unions need to draw a line in the sand; cost cutting should not impact on staffing and quality patient care,” he said.
The anonymous Auckland nurse has also revealed patients’ showers are often neglected while elderly patients are forced to wear pads because there are not enough nurses and health care assistants to help patients to the toilet.
“This is totally degrading for a normally continent person. Some will struggle to get to the toilet and will have fallen attempting to get to the toilet,” the nurse said.

Dietitians are crusading against Australia’s expanding waistlines with a new campaign designed to beat the winter bulge.
With Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing 61 per cent of Australian adults are now classified as overweight or obese, up from 56 per cent in 1995, the Dietitians Association of Australia has released a simple, four-step plan to help Australians ward off winter weight gain.
DAA spokesperson Milena Katz said the nation’s peak nutritional body wanted people to embrace healthy eating year-round.
“Physical activity levels often decline during winter,” she said.
“We don’t spend as much time outdoors expending energy. Therefore we do not need
as much food to fuel our bodies as we may need during other times of the year.
“So be sure to cut down on high energy, nutrient poor foods, such as cakes, biscuits and pies, and replace with plenty of lower energy nutritious options such as fruits and vegetables.
“Making it a priority during these three months to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly will help keep your weight in check and your body healthy, and help you feel your best.”
The DAA’s four step guide includes eating a healthy breakfast, using omega-3 fats found in fish to improve low mood symptoms, eating vitamin rich food rather than using pills to defend against colds and flus, and to swap comfort food such as puddings, pies and takeaway meals with healthy pastas, soups and steaks.
Ms Katz said expert advice from Accredited Practising Dietitians could help people keep their health in check.
“As many health experts say; prevention is better than a cure. So getting expert diet advice during winter can help prevent people from needing to turn to unproven detox diets and quick fixes to lose their winter weight come spring and summer.”

Around 1500 nurses and staff at New Zealand’s largest aged care provider have secured a 3.22 per cent pay rise, putting an end to their long-running pay dispute.
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation and the Service and Food Workers Union announced the deal, which fell slightly short of the union’s calls for a 3.5 per cent pay rise, but which also secured protection of overtime and other rights.
At its peak, the protracted nine-month dispute involved four-hour nursing strikes at more than 20 of Oceania Group’s 58 retirement villages and rest homes nationally, which provide care for more than 4000 New Zealanders.
The industrial action followed reports many experienced Oceania nurses were earning
up to $9000 less than similarly experienced colleagues at public hospitals.
SFWU spokesperson Alastair Duncan said the dispute highlighted widespread underfunding in the sector and a lack of focus on valuing care staff.
“The key issue in this dispute was getting government money passed on to the workforce and we are pleased that Oceania has now understood the need to pass on the funding it receives from District Health Boards to the care staff,” he said.
The Oceania agreement comes after a Human Rights Commission report found discrimination is rife against New Zealand’s 48,000 aged care workers.

The latest research on using cutting-edge transcranial magnetic stimulation technology to treat patients with neurogenic speech, language and swallowing disorders will be showcased to more than 500 Australian speech pathologists later this month.
Neuroscientist Professor Bruce Murdoch will unveil the new approach, a non-invasive method designed to help people with Parkinson’s disease and post-stroke patients communicate, in his keynote presentation at Speech Pathology Australia’s 2012 national conference in Hobart, Tasmania, from June 24-27.
Professor Murdoch is the founder and director
of the Centre for Neurogenic Communication Disorders Research at The University of Queensland, which is renowned world-wide for its research into physiological assessment and treatment of neurologically-based communication impairments.
Dr Murdoch’s presentation, including research and case examples, will be one of more than 130 presentations as part of the annual conference.
SPA national president Chris Stone said the conference would provide delegates with access to the latest research results and knowledge, which they could take back with them to their every-day practices.

CLINICAL MANAGER
Western Australian paramedics are calling for more detail on the State Government’s plan to inject more nurses and nurse practitioners into caring for patients waiting for emergency department beds.
The union representing the state’s paramedics, United Voice WA, fears the plan will not solve the state’s ramping crisis and has instead called for more paramedics and ambulances.
Health Minister Kim Hames has revealed the Health Department is investigating a plan for nurses, NPs and fewer paramedics to care for patients waiting for ED beds to enable ambulances to get back on the road.
Dr Hames said the plan could be introduced in the next month in a bid to reduce the problem of overcrowded EDs, due to an 11 per cent rise in patient numbers and extra hospital beds not being delivered until the new Fiona Stanley Hospital opens in 2014 and the new Midland Hospital opens in 2015.
A spokesperson for the Minister said the plan was an Australian first but would not be revealed until it had been fully investigated.
Dr Hames said the government had strategies to reduce ramping.
“Unlike other states, when patients are ramped in WA they do not remain in the ambulance,” he said.
“Instead, they are taken out of the ambulance and are cared for by paramedics. Ramping figures in other states is up to three times worse than in WA.
“One system we are looking at is a way of managing patients who are ramped that would ensure they received ongoing care
from hospital staff immediately, which would then allow ambulance drivers to get back on the road immediately.
“St John Ambulance is meeting all emergency response targets which shows the ramping is not having an adverse effect on emergency care in WA.
“Ideally, we would have no ramping and that is the goal I will continue to work towards.”
But a United Voice WA spokesperson said the initiative sounded like a pre-waiting area and would not fix ramping problems.
“We would just like to see the detail but it’s still not a better outcome for patients,” he said.
“We would like to see more resources. We think that will be better for everyone.
“Now seems like a pretty good time for an incredibly wealthy state riding a high boom to pour that money back into better community resources.”

An innovative Melbourne midwife has developed three iPhone applications for new parents.
Cathryn Curtin, the midwife consultant for Kaz Cooke’s renowned books Up the Duff and Kidwrangling, last year launched the first app of its kind in Australia – Midwife Cath’s Parenting Advice, designed to help new mums get through the first six weeks of parenting.
A nurse for 36 years and a practicing midwife for 32 years, Cathryn’s other apps feature video tutorials on bathing and wrapping, titled Midwife Cath’s Baby Bathing and Midwife Cath’s Wrap, and in the medical section of apps Cathryn is ranked 177 in the world.
“Even though I am 55 it was my aim to make these apps, to do something contemporary – that’s what my patients need. The parents of today are looking to apps and looking to Google,” she said.
“Anyone can go and do an app but not everyone has the length of experience and depth of experience that I have.”
Cathryn said apps were a faster, more convenient way of providing information
on topics such as breastfeeding, mastitis and reflux to new mums who often turn to Google where information is rife and often overwhelming.
Cathryn first started work at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1975 and has since worked at most hospitals around the city.
Instrumental in establishing birth centres in Melbourne in the 1980s, Cathryn has also worked as a maternal and child health nurse and now works alongside obstetrician Dr Len Kliman in East Melbourne, providing ante-natal care, childbirth education and care for new parents.
Cathryn said her midwifery career had been a childhood dream come true.
“I have always wanted to be a midwife. Probably from the age of eight or nine I wanted to be a midwife,” she said.
“I love that I can communicate with women and their partners and I love that I can help them and give them so much information and security.”

About 15,000 people have taken a stroll through an iconic part of Australia’s nursing history thanks to an innovative, interactive online museum.
Royal District Nursing Service has launched RDNS Reflections, a website showcasing 13 decades, seven themes and more than 500 stories, artefacts and news media about the organisation.
RDNS first began in 1885 when a solitary nurse set out on foot to treat Melbourne’s sick and poor and has now become Australia’s oldest and largest provider of home nursing and health care services with 1200 nurses.
The award-winning website shares remarkable stories, images and interviews on the rich history of the independent, not-for-profit charity, which now provides professional nursing and health care to up to 9000 people from 20 sites across Melbourne, parts of rural Victoria, New South Wales and in Auckland, New Zealand.
RDNS spokesperson John Allin said the website was launched late last year to pay tribute to the organisation’s founders and to
detail RDNS’ progression through the years to become a pioneering service.
“It really chronicles the 127-year-old story of RDNS. Going back to the early days, none of those nurses would ever have envisaged that right now, today, we are trialling telehealth, where the nurse sits in front of the monitor camera to speak to her client to make sure her client takes her medicine properly 100 kilometres away,” he said.
“The people here are really stewards of a fantastic legacy and that really helps the organisation be visionary because we are following the example of those who came before us.”
Mr Allin said the site includes information such as Queen Elizabeth allowing the Royal prefix to be used in the DNS name in 1966 to the introduction of bicycles and cars for nurses to visit patients.
“There are little gems of information that salt and pepper our history,” he said.

Online museum showcases rich nursing historyby Karen Keast
From the nurses who had a food fight at a hospital to the nurse who posed with a human placenta, there are numerous examples of nurses facing disciplinary action for their inappropriate use of social media.
Nurses fit the social media profile with statistics showing 86 per cent of females aged between 18 and 50 are active in social media, which is also the nursing profession’s main demographic.
The peak nursing organisations in Australia and New Zealand are working to combat the issue, providing nurses and nursing students with guidelines to online professionalism in the wake of an increasing number of nurses being caught, often inadvertently, breaching professional boundaries.
There are a range of high profile cases of nurses violating professional guidelines online, including the 2009 incident where a series of photos were taken at the Stafford Hospital in the United Kingdom of a food fight between nurses and posted on a nurse’s Facebook site.
At the time, the Healthcare Commission had recently criticised the hospital; finding that up to 1200 patients had needlessly lost their lives as a result of poor nursing care, neglect and staff shortages.
The food fight came to light when a relative of a patient who had died of neglect at the hospital saw the Facebook images and alerted a local lobby group.
Also in the UK, a male community psychiatric nurse was struck off the UK Register of Nurses in 2008 for contacting a former patient on Facebook and starting a sexual relationship with the woman.
In one case, seven UK nurses and doctors were suspended from a hospital after posting photos of themselves on Facebook playing the ‘lying down game’ on hospital premises, using hospital trolleys and ward floors.
And in America, a nursing student was expelled after she posted a photo on Facebook of herself with a human placenta.
Australia has not been immune, with the Australian Nursing Federation last year revealing growing numbers of Australian nurses are being reprimanded for posting comments regarding “sensitive issues” online.
“Social networking may be instant and fun, but people are increasingly using these mediums to complain about employers, fellow staff members and among our colleagues and even patients,” ANF federal secretary Lee Thomas told Nursing Careers Allied Health.
“Clearly, using social networking sites in this manner is problematic in the growing number of cases of employers initiating disciplinary proceedings against staff in relation to comments made on social networking sites.”
In New Zealand, it has been text messaging, not social media, which has landed nurses in hot water according to The Nursing Council of New Zealand.

The ACT will receive an extra 150 nurses, midwives, medical and allied health workers in the next financial year.
ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher has announced a $109.5 million health spending spree spanning four years to bolster health services, targeting emergency department waiting times, more hospital beds and an increase in elective surgeries.
Australian Nursing Federation ACT branch secretary Jenny Miragaya said the move would help alleviate day to day pressures on nurses and midwives, such as increased workloads.
“Nursing and midwifery staff are the backbone of the public health system and deserve to be treated fairly, with adequate staffing levels and reasonable workloads,” she said.
“This ensures a safe working environment for staff and a safe clinical environment for vulnerable patients.
“The new positions promised by the ACT government must be available to meet the projected increase in demand forecast in the budget.
“Additional emergency department and critical care capacity, increases in elective surgery and the new midwifery model of care at Calvary Hospital must be adequately staffed with new positions established.”
The ACT budget includes $12.6 million for the Canberra Hospital’s emergency department, including 30 new doctors and nurses, four new cardiac beds and six new treatment areas.

Máori nurses who smoke will be the focus of a new research project aimed at helping Máori nurses and their patients butt out.
The project, Máori nurses and smoking: exploring the context and opportunity for change, will use kaupapa Máori research methods to create interventions with Máori nurses in a bid to help them quit smoking.
Statistics show about 45 per cent of Máori aged between 15 and 65 smoke while tobacco smoking kills around 5000 New Zealanders every year.

NURSE UNIT MANAGER OPERATING SUITEHamilton Western District Health Service is a public health service which incorporates 96 acute beds, 170 high and low level extended care and residential aged care beds, 35 Independent Living Units, community health and youth services.
They are currently looking for a Nurse Unit Manager to lead and manage the nursing workforce in their operating theatres. Reporting to the Director of Nursing, you will be responsible for:
•providingclinicalnurseleadership;
•participatinginplanningthedirectionandnatureofthenursingservice;
•determining,implementingandmonitoringclinicalpracticeandstandards,utilisingevidence-basedpracticemethods;
•managingandprovidingdirectionfornursingandancillaryunitstaff;

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate and possess current AHPRA registration and at least 5 years post-graduate nursing experience and demonstrated management skills.

About 15,000 people have taken a stroll through an iconic part of Australia’s nursing history thanks to an innovative, interactive online museum.
Royal District Nursing Service has launched RDNS Reflections, a website showcasing 13 decades, seven themes and more than 500 stories, artefacts and news media about the organisation.
RDNS first began in 1885 when a solitary nurse set out on foot to treat Melbourne’s sick and poor and has now become Australia’s oldest and largest provider of home nursing and health care services with 1200 nurses.
The award-winning website shares remarkable stories, images and interviews on the rich history of the independent, not-for-profit charity, which now provides professional nursing and health care to up to 9000 people from 20 sites across Melbourne, parts of rural Victoria, New South Wales and in Auckland, New Zealand.
RDNS spokesperson John Allin said the website was launched late last year to pay tribute to the organisation’s founders and to
detail RDNS’ progression through the years to become a pioneering service.
“It really chronicles the 127-year-old story of RDNS. Going back to the early days, none of those nurses would ever have envisaged that right now, today, we are trialling telehealth, where the nurse sits in front of the monitor camera to speak to her client to make sure her client takes her medicine properly 100 kilometres away,” he said.
“The people here are really stewards of a fantastic legacy and that really helps the organisation be visionary because we are following the example of those who came before us.”
Mr Allin said the site includes information such as Queen Elizabeth allowing the Royal prefix to be used in the DNS name in 1966 to the introduction of bicycles and cars for nurses to visit patients.
“There are little gems of information that salt and pepper our history,” he said.

Online museum showcases rich nursing historyby Karen Keast
From the nurses who had a food fight at a hospital to the nurse who posed with a human placenta, there are numerous examples of nurses facing disciplinary action for their inappropriate use of social media.
Nurses fit the social media profile with statistics showing 86 per cent of females aged between 18 and 50 are active in social media, which is also the nursing profession’s main demographic.
The peak nursing organisations in Australia and New Zealand are working to combat the issue, providing nurses and nursing students with guidelines to online professionalism in the wake of an increasing number of nurses being caught, often inadvertently, breaching professional boundaries.
There are a range of high profile cases of nurses violating professional guidelines online, including the 2009 incident where a series of photos were taken at the Stafford Hospital in the United Kingdom of a food fight between nurses and posted on a nurse’s Facebook site.
At the time, the Healthcare Commission had recently criticised the hospital; finding that up to 1200 patients had needlessly lost their lives as a result of poor nursing care, neglect and staff shortages.
The food fight came to light when a relative of a patient who had died of neglect at the hospital saw the Facebook images and alerted a local lobby group.
Also in the UK, a male community psychiatric nurse was struck off the UK Register of Nurses in 2008 for contacting a former patient on Facebook and starting a sexual relationship with the woman.
In one case, seven UK nurses and doctors were suspended from a hospital after posting photos of themselves on Facebook playing the ‘lying down game’ on hospital premises, using hospital trolleys and ward floors.
And in America, a nursing student was expelled after she posted a photo on Facebook of herself with a human placenta.
Australia has not been immune, with the Australian Nursing Federation last year revealing growing numbers of Australian nurses are being reprimanded for posting comments regarding “sensitive issues” online.
“Social networking may be instant and fun, but people are increasingly using these mediums to complain about employers, fellow staff members and among our colleagues and even patients,” ANF federal secretary Lee Thomas told Nursing Careers Allied Health.
“Clearly, using social networking sites in this manner is problematic in the growing number of cases of employers initiating disciplinary proceedings against staff in relation to comments made on social networking sites.”
In New Zealand, it has been text messaging, not social media, which has landed nurses in hot water according to The Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Psychologists can make a crucial and often rewarding contribution to mental health outcomes for asylum seekers caught in the detention system, but according to one specialist in the field, those entering such roles for the first time should be prepared. Belinda Smart reports.
While asylum seekers frequently make the headlines, a deeper insight into the repercussions of their ongoing plight once they have reached Australian shores and entered this country’s detention system, is harder to come by. One group of people who do gain such insight however, are the psychologists charged with safeguarding the mental health of detainees.
As a psychologist, Adjunct Associate Professor Amanda Gordon (Hon FAPS) has been a member of the Detention Health Expert Advisory Group (DeHAG)*, and its Mental Health Subgroup, since 2006, and has contributed to related policy development and implementation since then. She has met many of the psychologists who have worked in the immigration detention network as contractors to health service provider International Health Management Services (IHMS) - the contractor responsible for all Australian detention centres. She has also provided training to health and non-health personnel working in the detention system.
For many detainees, who have already been the victims of torture and trauma in their country of origin, before having to brave a perilous journey to Australia, the fact of immigration detention is “the last straw” that often tips the balance of their already fragile mental health, Amanda says.
“The lack of freedom and continued uncertainty about the future that are endemic to detention mean hope and resilience are worn down, healthy relationships are compromised, and
depression and anxiety are prevalent. Detainees are also at risk of being misidentified as ‘troublemakers’ or ‘behaviourally challenging’ when their mental health is deteriorating.”
Mental health deterioration worsens as time goes on and often accelerates dramatically after around half a year in detention, she says.
“There’s a been quite lot of research done on how mental health can deteriorate; typically the first six months of an asylum seeker’s stay are manageable, because during that period they are hopeful and have a potential end point in view. After that, as hope begins to dwindle, mental health becomes increasingly compromised.”
Psychologists suited to working within the detention system are highly sought after, Amanda says, but it’s a role that requires much more than standard qualifications and experience.
“Demand is high for IHMS to find professionals suited to this work,” she says. “It can be stressful and exhausting,” she adds, with “burn out” a common problem for psychologists.
“Psychologists entering this area do not necessarily require special training, however key requirements include experience of or awareness of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as an understanding of the psychological implications of torture and trauma.”
Psychologists must also be prepared to face dilemmas concerning their own responses to immigration detention, with many finding it challenging to work within a system if they believe it is morally flawed. They must also be capable of monitoring and assessing their own mental health responses to some of the challenges they face.

While working in the detention system entails operating in a troubling and often morally challenging environment, recent improvements have somewhat lightened the load for psychologists, she says.
One such development is that psychologists now have access to supervision from a professional in the field of psychology, whereas previously they were directed to attain supervision from their team leader, who might not be sufficiently well versed in psychology to be effective as a supervisor. Furthermore, Amanda notes another recent and welcome extension of the length of IHMS contracts from six weeks to six months (including several periods away within the six months) as a positive change. This gives psychologists a greater sense of continuity with their clients, at the same time allowing them to “decompress” during away periods.
Clearly working in the detention system should not be undertaken lightly, but Amanda also points out that the work can be fulfilling.
“There are plenty of happy ending stories, of people who started off with mental health issues and, through access to a psychologist, emerge from the system in a healthier frame of mind.”
“It can certainly be very rewarding working with severely damaged people and helping them through an extremely difficult time in their lives. It’s very satisfying in the happier cases where you see them coming out on the other side.”

Furthermore, Amanda notes another recent and welcome extension of the length of IHMS contracts from six weeks to six months (including several periods away within the six months) as a positive change. This gives psychologists a greater sense of continuity with their clients, at the same time allowing them to “decompress” during away periods.
Clearly working in the detention system should not be undertaken lightly, but Amanda also points out that the work can be fulfilling.
“There are plenty of happy ending stories, of people who started off with mental health issues and, through access to a psychologist, emerge from the system in a healthier frame of mind.”
“It can certainly be very rewarding working with severely damaged people and helping them through an extremely difficult time in their lives. It’s very satisfying in the happier cases where you see them coming out on the other side.”

Psychologists can make a crucial and often rewarding contribution to mental health outcomes for asylum seekers caught in the detention system, but according to one specialist in the field, those entering such roles for the first time should be prepared. Belinda Smart reports.
While asylum seekers frequently make the headlines, a deeper insight into the repercussions of their ongoing plight once they have reached Australian shores and entered this country’s detention system, is harder to come by. One group of people who do gain such insight however, are the psychologists charged with safeguarding the mental health of detainees.
As a psychologist, Adjunct Associate Professor Amanda Gordon (Hon FAPS) has been a member of the Detention Health Expert Advisory Group (DeHAG)*, and its Mental Health Subgroup, since 2006, and has contributed to related policy development and implementation since then. She has met many of the psychologists who have worked in the immigration detention network as contractors to health service provider International Health Management Services (IHMS) - the contractor responsible for all Australian detention centres. She has also provided training to health and non-health personnel working in the detention system.
For many detainees, who have already been the victims of torture and trauma in their country of origin, before having to brave a perilous journey to Australia, the fact of immigration detention is “the last straw” that often tips the balance of their already fragile mental health, Amanda says.
“The lack of freedom and continued uncertainty about the future that are endemic to detention mean hope and resilience are worn down, healthy relationships are compromised, and
depression and anxiety are prevalent. Detainees are also at risk of being misidentified as ‘troublemakers’ or ‘behaviourally challenging’ when their mental health is deteriorating.”
Mental health deterioration worsens as time goes on and often accelerates dramatically after around half a year in detention, she says.
“There’s a been quite lot of research done on how mental health can deteriorate; typically the first six months of an asylum seeker’s stay are manageable, because during that period they are hopeful and have a potential end point in view. After that, as hope begins to dwindle, mental health becomes increasingly compromised.”
Psychologists suited to working within the detention system are highly sought after, Amanda says, but it’s a role that requires much more than standard qualifications and experience.
“Demand is high for IHMS to find professionals suited to this work,” she says. “It can be stressful and exhausting,” she adds, with “burn out” a common problem for psychologists.
“Psychologists entering this area do not necessarily require special training, however key requirements include experience of or awareness of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as an understanding of the psychological implications of torture and trauma.”
Psychologists must also be prepared to face dilemmas concerning their own responses to immigration detention, with many finding it challenging to work within a system if they believe it is morally flawed. They must also be capable of monitoring and assessing their own mental health responses to some of the challenges they face.

“One of the hardest things for psychologists is a sense of dissonance between the professional code of ethics [as laid out by the Australian Psychological Society and the Psychologists’ Registration Board] and some of the things they’re asked to do and see.”
While working in the detention system entails operating in a troubling and often morally challenging environment, recent improvements have somewhat lightened the load for psychologists, she says.
One such development is that psychologists now have access to supervision from a professional in the field of psychology, whereas previously they were directed to attain supervision from their team leader, who might not be sufficiently well versed in psychology to be effective as a supervisor. Furthermore, Amanda notes another recent and welcome extension of the length of IHMS contracts from six weeks to six months (including several periods away within the six months) as a positive change. “One of the hardest things for psychologists is a sense of dissonance between the professional code of ethics [as laid out by the Australian Psychological Society and the Psychologists’ Registration Board] and some of the things they’re asked to do and see.”
While working in the detention system entails operating in a troubling and often morally challenging environment, recent improvements have somewhat lightened the load for psychologists, she says.
One such development is that psychologists now have access to supervision from a professional in the field of psychology, whereas previously they were directed to attain supervision from their team leader, who might not be sufficiently well versed in psychology to be effective as a supervisor. Furthermore, Amanda notes another recent and welcome extension of the length of IHMS contracts from six weeks to six months (including several periods away within the six months) as a positive change. This gives psychologists a greater sense of continuity with their clients, at the same time allowing them to “decompress” during away periods.
Clearly working in the detention system should not be undertaken lightly, but Amanda also points out that the work can be fulfilling.
“There are plenty of happy ending stories, of people who started off with mental health issues and, through access to a psychologist, emerge from the system in a healthier frame of mind.”
“It can certainly be very rewarding working with severely damaged people and helping them through an extremely difficult time in their lives. It’s very satisfying in the happier cases where you see them coming out on the other side.”

Psychologists can make a crucial and often rewarding contribution to mental health outcomes for asylum seekers caught in the detention system, but according to one specialist in the field, those entering such roles for the first time should be prepared. Belinda Smart reports.
While asylum seekers frequently make the headlines, a deeper insight into the repercussions of their ongoing plight once they have reached Australian shores and entered this country’s detention system, is harder to come by. One group of people who do gain such insight however, are the psychologists charged with safeguarding the mental health of detainees.
As a psychologist, Adjunct Associate Professor Amanda Gordon (Hon FAPS) has been a member of the Detention Health Expert Advisory Group (DeHAG)*, and its Mental Health Subgroup, since 2006, and has contributed to related policy development and implementation since then. She has met many of the psychologists who have worked in the immigration detention network as contractors to health service provider International Health Management Services (IHMS) - the contractor responsible for all Australian detention centres. She has also provided training to health and non-health personnel working in the detention system.
For many detainees, who have already been the victims of torture and trauma in their country of origin, before having to brave a perilous journey to Australia, the fact of immigration detention is “the last straw” that often tips the balance of their already fragile mental health, Amanda says.
“The lack of freedom and continued uncertainty about the future that are endemic to detention mean hope and resilience are worn down, healthy relationships are compromised, and
depression and anxiety are prevalent. Detainees are also at risk of being misidentified as ‘troublemakers’ or ‘behaviourally challenging’ when their mental health is deteriorating.”
Mental health deterioration worsens as time goes on and often accelerates dramatically after around half a year in detention, she says.
“There’s a been quite lot of research done on how mental health can deteriorate; typically the first six months of an asylum seeker’s stay are manageable, because during that period they are hopeful and have a potential end point in view. After that, as hope begins to dwindle, mental health becomes increasingly compromised.”
Psychologists suited to working within the detention system are highly sought after, Amanda says, but it’s a role that requires much more than standard qualifications and experience.
“Demand is high for IHMS to find professionals suited to this work,” she says. “It can be stressful and exhausting,” she adds, with “burn out” a common problem for psychologists.
“Psychologists entering this area do not necessarily require special training, however key requirements include experience of or awareness of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as an understanding of the psychological implications of torture and trauma.”
Psychologists must also be prepared to face dilemmas concerning their own responses to immigration detention, with many finding it challenging to work within a system if they believe it is morally flawed. They must also be capable of monitoring and assessing their own mental health responses to some of the challenges they face.

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher has announced a $109.5 million health spending spree spanning four years to bolster health services, targeting emergency department waiting times, more hospital beds and an increase in elective surgeries.
Australian Nursing Federation ACT branch secretary Jenny Miragaya said the move would help alleviate day to day pressures on nurses and midwives, such as increased workloads.
“Nursing and midwifery staff are the backbone of the public health system and deserve to be treated fairly, with adequate staffing levels and reasonable workloads,” she said.
“This ensures a safe working environment for staff and a safe clinical environment for vulnerable patients.
“The new positions promised by the ACT government must be available to meet the projected increase in demand forecast in the budget.
“Additional emergency department and critical care capacity, increases in elective surgery and the new midwifery model of care at Calvary Hospital must be adequately staffed with new positions established.”
The ACT budget includes $12.6 million for the Canberra Hospital’s emergency department, including 30 new doctors and nurses, four new cardiac beds and six new treatment areas.

Máori nurses who smoke will be the focus of a new research project aimed at helping Máori nurses and their patients butt out.
The project, Máori nurses and smoking: exploring the context and opportunity for change, will use kaupapa Máori research methods to create interventions with Máori nurses in a bid to help them quit smoking.
Statistics show about 45 per cent of Máori aged between 15 and 65 smoke while tobacco smoking kills around 5000 New Zealanders every year.
The Health Research Council of New Zealand has announced it will provide $594,506 for the project, a joint venture between Te Runanga o Aotearoa NZNO, Whakauae Research for Máori Health and Development and the Auckland
University of Technology.
New Zealand Nurses Organisation kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku said nurses are role models and helping Máori nurses to quit smoking would have flow on affects for the health of Máori.
“We have known for some time that Máori nurses’ smoking rates are much higher than they should be,” she said.
“Finding out why that is and developing ways to help nurses quit will have wider health benefits than just for the individuals who stop smoking.
“Research shows advice and support from nursing staff can increase people’s success in quitting smoking, especially in a hospital setting,” she said.

Máori nurses who smoke will be the focus of a new research project aimed at helping Máori nurses and their patients butt out.
The project, Máori nurses and smoking: exploring the context and opportunity for change, will use kaupapa Máori research methods to create interventions with Máori nurses in a bid to help them quit smoking.
Statistics show about 45 per cent of Máori aged between 15 and 65 smoke while tobacco smoking kills around 5000 New Zealanders every year.
The Health Research Council of New Zealand has announced it will provide $594,506 for the project, a joint venture between Te Runanga o Aotearoa NZNO, Whakauae Research for Máori Health and Development and the Auckland
University of Technology.
New Zealand Nurses Organisation kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku said nurses are role models and helping Máori nurses to quit smoking would have flow on affects for the health of Máori.
“We have known for some time that Máori nurses’ smoking rates are much higher than they should be,” she said.
“Finding out why that is and developing ways to help nurses quit will have wider health benefits than just for the individuals who stop smoking.
“Research shows advice and support from nursing staff can increase people’s success in quitting smoking, especially in a hospital setting,” she said.

About 15,000 people have taken a stroll through an iconic part of Australia’s nursing history thanks to an innovative, interactive online museum.
Royal District Nursing Service has launched RDNS Reflections, a website showcasing 13 decades, seven themes and more than 500 stories, artefacts and news media about the organisation.
RDNS first began in 1885 when a solitary nurse set out on foot to treat Melbourne’s sick and poor and has now become Australia’s oldest and largest provider of home nursing and health care services with 1200 nurses.
The award-winning website shares remarkable stories, images and interviews on the rich history of the independent, not-for-profit charity, which now provides professional nursing and health care to up to 9000 people from 20 sites across Melbourne, parts of rural Victoria, New South Wales and in Auckland, New Zealand.
RDNS spokesperson John Allin said the website was launched late last year to pay tribute to the organisation’s founders and to
detail RDNS’ progression through the years to become a pioneering service.
“It really chronicles the 127-year-old story of RDNS. Going back to the early days, none of those nurses would ever have envisaged that right now, today, we are trialling telehealth, where the nurse sits in front of the monitor camera to speak to her client to make sure her client takes her medicine properly 100 kilometres away,” he said.
“The people here are really stewards of a fantastic legacy and that really helps the organisation be visionary because we are following the example of those who came before us.”
Mr Allin said the site includes information such as Queen Elizabeth allowing the Royal prefix to be used in the DNS name in 1966 to the introduction of bicycles and cars for nurses to visit patients.
“There are little gems of information that salt and pepper our history,” he said.

Online museum showcases rich nursing historyby Karen Keast
From the nurses who had a food fight at a hospital to the nurse who posed with a human placenta, there are numerous examples of nurses facing disciplinary action for their inappropriate use of social media.
Nurses fit the social media profile with statistics showing 86 per cent of females aged between 18 and 50 are active in social media, which is also the nursing profession’s main demographic.
The peak nursing organisations in Australia and New Zealand are working to combat the issue, providing nurses and nursing students with guidelines to online professionalism in the wake of an increasing number of nurses being caught, often inadvertently, breaching professional boundaries.
There are a range of high profile cases of nurses violating professional guidelines online, including the 2009 incident where a series of photos were taken at the Stafford Hospital in the United Kingdom of a food fight between nurses and posted on a nurse’s Facebook site.
At the time, the Healthcare Commission had recently criticised the hospital; finding that up to 1200 patients had needlessly lost their lives as a result of poor nursing care, neglect and staff shortages.
The food fight came to light when a relative of a patient who had died of neglect at the hospital saw the Facebook images and alerted a local lobby group.
Also in the UK, a male community psychiatric nurse was struck off the UK Register of Nurses in 2008 for contacting a former patient on Facebook and starting a sexual relationship with the woman.
In one case, seven UK nurses and doctors were suspended from a hospital after posting photos of themselves on Facebook playing the ‘lying down game’ on hospital premises, using hospital trolleys and ward floors.
And in America, a nursing student was expelled after she posted a photo on Facebook of herself with a human placenta.
Australia has not been immune, with the Australian Nursing Federation last year revealing growing numbers of Australian nurses are being reprimanded for posting comments regarding “sensitive issues” online.
“Social networking may be instant and fun, but people are increasingly using these mediums to complain about employers, fellow staff members and among our colleagues and even patients,” ANF federal secretary Lee Thomas told Nursing Careers Allied Health.
“Clearly, using social networking sites in this manner is problematic in the growing number of cases of employers initiating disciplinary proceedings against staff in relation to comments made on social networking sites.”
In New Zealand, it has been text messaging, not social media, which has landed nurses in hot water according to The Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Western Australian paramedics are calling for more detail on the State Government’s plan to inject more nurses and nurse practitioners into caring for patients waiting for emergency department beds.
The union representing the state’s paramedics, United Voice WA, fears the plan will not solve the state’s ramping crisis and has instead called for more paramedics and ambulances.
Health Minister Kim Hames has revealed the Health Department is investigating a plan for nurses, NPs and fewer paramedics to care for patients waiting for ED beds to enable ambulances to get back on the road.
Dr Hames said the plan could be introduced in the next month in a bid to reduce the problem of overcrowded EDs, due to an 11 per cent rise in patient numbers and extra hospital beds not being delivered until the new Fiona Stanley Hospital opens in 2014 and the new Midland Hospital opens in 2015.
A spokesperson for the Minister said the plan was an Australian first but would not be revealed until it had been fully investigated.
Dr Hames said the government had strategies to reduce ramping.
“Unlike other states, when patients are ramped in WA they do not remain in the ambulance,” he said.
“Instead, they are taken out of the ambulance and are cared for by paramedics. Ramping figures in other states is up to three times worse than in WA.
“One system we are looking at is a way of managing patients who are ramped that would ensure they received ongoing care
from hospital staff immediately, which would then allow ambulance drivers to get back on the road immediately.
“St John Ambulance is meeting all emergency response targets which shows the ramping is not having an adverse effect on emergency care in WA.
“Ideally, we would have no ramping and that is the goal I will continue to work towards.”
But a United Voice WA spokesperson said the initiative sounded like a pre-waiting area and would not fix ramping problems.
“We would just like to see the detail but it’s still not a better outcome for patients,” he said.
“We would like to see more resources. We think that will be better for everyone.
“Now seems like a pretty good time for an incredibly wealthy state riding a high boom to pour that money back into better community resources.”

An innovative Melbourne midwife has developed three iPhone applications for new parents.
Cathryn Curtin, the midwife consultant for Kaz Cooke’s renowned books Up the Duff and Kidwrangling, last year launched the first app of its kind in Australia – Midwife Cath’s Parenting Advice, designed to help new mums get through the first six weeks of parenting.
A nurse for 36 years and a practicing midwife for 32 years, Cathryn’s other apps feature video tutorials on bathing and wrapping, titled Midwife Cath’s Baby Bathing and Midwife Cath’s Wrap, and in the medical section of apps Cathryn is ranked 177 in the world.
“Even though I am 55 it was my aim to make these apps, to do something contemporary – that’s what my patients need. The parents of today are looking to apps and looking to Google,” she said.
“Anyone can go and do an app but not everyone has the length of experience and depth of experience that I have.”
Cathryn said apps were a faster, more convenient way of providing information
on topics such as breastfeeding, mastitis and reflux to new mums who often turn to Google where information is rife and often overwhelming.
Cathryn first started work at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1975 and has since worked at most hospitals around the city.
Instrumental in establishing birth centres in Melbourne in the 1980s, Cathryn has also worked as a maternal and child health nurse and now works alongside obstetrician Dr Len Kliman in East Melbourne, providing ante-natal care, childbirth education and care for new parents.
Cathryn said her midwifery career had been a childhood dream come true.

An innovative Melbourne midwife has developed three iPhone applications for new parents.
Cathryn Curtin, the midwife consultant for Kaz Cooke’s renowned books Up the Duff and Kidwrangling, last year launched the first app of its kind in Australia – Midwife Cath’s Parenting Advice, designed to help new mums get through the first six weeks of parenting.
A nurse for 36 years and a practicing midwife for 32 years, Cathryn’s other apps feature video tutorials on bathing and wrapping, titled Midwife Cath’s Baby Bathing and Midwife Cath’s Wrap, and in the medical section of apps Cathryn is ranked 177 in the world.
“Even though I am 55 it was my aim to make these apps, to do something contemporary – that’s what my patients need. The parents of today are looking to apps and looking to Google,” she said.
“Anyone can go and do an app but not everyone has the length of experience and depth of experience that I have.”
Cathryn said apps were a faster, more convenient way of providing information
on topics such as breastfeeding, mastitis and reflux to new mums who often turn to Google where information is rife and often overwhelming.
Cathryn first started work at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1975 and has since worked at most hospitals around the city.
Instrumental in establishing birth centres in Melbourne in the 1980s, Cathryn has also worked as a maternal and child health nurse and now works alongside obstetrician Dr Len Kliman in East Melbourne, providing ante-natal care, childbirth education and care for new parents.
Cathryn said her midwifery career had been a childhood dream come true.
“I have always wanted to be a midwife. Probably from the age of eight or nine I wanted to be a midwife,” she said.
“I love that I can communicate with women and their partners and I love that I can help them and give them so much information and security.”

Western Australian paramedics are calling for more detail on the State Government’s plan to inject more nurses and nurse practitioners into caring for patients waiting for emergency department beds.
The union representing the state’s paramedics, United Voice WA, fears the plan will not solve the state’s ramping crisis and has instead called for more paramedics and ambulances.
Health Minister Kim Hames has revealed the Health Department is investigating a plan for nurses, NPs and fewer paramedics to care for patients waiting for ED beds to enable ambulances to get back on the road.
Dr Hames said the plan could be introduced in the next month in a bid to reduce the problem of overcrowded EDs, due to an 11 per cent rise in patient numbers and extra hospital beds not being delivered until the new Fiona Stanley Hospital opens in 2014 and the new Midland Hospital opens in 2015.
A spokesperson for the Minister said the plan was an Australian first but would not be revealed until it had been fully investigated.
Dr Hames said the government had strategies to reduce ramping.
“Unlike other states, when patients are ramped in WA they do not remain in the ambulance,” he said.
“Instead, they are taken out of the ambulance and are cared for by paramedics. Ramping figures in other states is up to three times worse than in WA.
“One system we are looking at is a way of managing patients who are ramped that would ensure they received ongoing care
from hospital staff immediately, which would then allow ambulance drivers to get back on the road immediately.
“St John Ambulance is meeting all emergency response targets which shows the ramping is not having an adverse effect on emergency care in WA.
“Ideally, we would have no ramping and that is the goal I will continue to work towards.”
But a United Voice WA spokesperson said the initiative sounded like a pre-waiting area and would not fix ramping problems.
“We would just like to see the detail but it’s still not a better outcome for patients,” he said.
“We would like to see more resources. We think that will be better for everyone.
“Now seems like a pretty good time for an incredibly wealthy state riding a high boom to pour that money back into better community resources.”

A nurse has spoken out about the disheartening working conditions affecting nurses at Auckland District Health Board.
The nurse, who wants to remain anonymous, has revealed nurses do not have the time to listen to oncology patients with the ward short five full-time equivalent nurses, have a lack of basic equipment such as thermometers and pulse oximeters, and are struggling with overwhelming nurse shortages and a dramatic drop in the number of health care assistants.
“Probably the biggest stress of all is as nurses we simply do not have the time to actually sit
down with a patient when we see we need to, and actually hear what they need to tell us,” the nurse said.
“These (oncology) patients are fighting for their lives and we are not able to fully support this fight as we flit in and out and do just the basic tasks – this is really getting to just so many nurses not being able to fulfil our caring role.”
The revelations come after a New Zealand Nurses Organisation survey revealed Auckland DHB has shortages of more than 120 Registered Nurses, including 48 nurses at Starship Children’s Hospital.
NZNO organiser Craig Muir said nurses are overworked, stressed and morale was low, resulting in dangerous working conditions.
Mr Muir said a DHB budget blowout of $4 million had slowed the recruiting process, with new employees delayed up to three months in starting work, while there was also a non-replacement policy on all staff on annual or sick leave, and casual staff numbers have been dramatically reduced.
He said the DHB could resolve the situation by prioritising staff levels and patient care.
“DHBs and unions need to draw a line in the sand; cost cutting should not impact on staffing and quality patient care,” he said.
The anonymous Auckland nurse has also revealed patients’ showers are often neglected while elderly patients are forced to wear pads because there are not enough nurses and health care assistants to help patients to the toilet.
“This is totally degrading for a normally continent person. Some will struggle to get to the toilet and will have fallen attempting to get to the toilet,” the nurse said.

Dietitians are crusading against Australia’s expanding waistlines with a new campaign designed to beat the winter bulge.
With Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing 61 per cent of Australian adults are now classified as overweight or obese, up from 56 per cent in 1995, the Dietitians Association of Australia has released a simple, four-step plan to help Australians ward off winter weight gain.
DAA spokesperson Milena Katz said the nation’s peak nutritional body wanted people to embrace healthy eating year-round.
“Physical activity levels often decline during winter,” she said.
“We don’t spend as much time outdoors expending energy. Therefore we do not need
as much food to fuel our bodies as we may need during other times of the year.
“So be sure to cut down on high energy, nutrient poor foods, such as cakes, biscuits and pies, and replace with plenty of lower energy nutritious options such as fruits and vegetables.
“Making it a priority during these three months to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly will help keep your weight in check and your body healthy, and help you feel your best.”
The DAA’s four step guide includes eating a healthy breakfast, using omega-3 fats found in fish to improve low mood symptoms, eating vitamin rich food rather than using pills to defend against colds and flus, and to swap comfort food such as puddings, pies and takeaway meals with healthy pastas, soups and steaks.
Ms Katz said expert advice from Accredited Practising Dietitians could help people keep their health in check.
“As many health experts say; prevention is better than a cure. So getting expert diet advice during winter can help prevent people from needing to turn to unproven detox diets and quick fixes to lose their winter weight come spring and summer.”

Around 1500 nurses and staff at New Zealand’s largest aged care provider have secured a 3.22 per cent pay rise, putting an end to their long-running pay dispute.
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation and the Service and Food Workers Union announced the deal, which fell slightly short of the union’s calls for a 3.5 per cent pay rise, but which also secured protection of overtime and other rights.
At its peak, the protracted nine-month dispute involved four-hour nursing strikes at more than 20 of Oceania Group’s 58 retirement villages and rest homes nationally, which provide care for more than 4000 New Zealanders.
The industrial action followed reports many experienced Oceania nurses were earning
up to $9000 less than similarly experienced colleagues at public hospitals.
SFWU spokesperson Alastair Duncan said the dispute highlighted widespread underfunding in the sector and a lack of focus on valuing care staff.
“The key issue in this dispute was getting government money passed on to the workforce and we are pleased that Oceania has now understood the need to pass on the funding it receives from District Health Boards to the care staff,” he said.
The Oceania agreement comes after a Human Rights Commission report found discrimination is rife against New Zealand’s 48,000 aged care workers.

The latest research on using cutting-edge transcranial magnetic stimulation technology to treat patients with neurogenic speech, language and swallowing disorders will be showcased to more than 500 Australian speech pathologists later this month.
Neuroscientist Professor Bruce Murdoch will unveil the new approach, a non-invasive method designed to help people with Parkinson’s disease and post-stroke patients communicate, in his keynote presentation at Speech Pathology Australia’s 2012 national conference in Hobart, Tasmania, from June 24-27.
Professor Murdoch is the founder and director
of the Centre for Neurogenic Communication Disorders Research at The University of Queensland, which is renowned world-wide for its research into physiological assessment and treatment of neurologically-based communication impairments.
Dr Murdoch’s presentation, including research and case examples, will be one of more than 130 presentations as part of the annual conference.
SPA national president Chris Stone said the conference would provide delegates with access to the latest research results and knowledge, which they could take back with them to their every-day practices.

Dietitians are crusading against Australia’s expanding waistlines with a new campaign designed to beat the winter bulge.
With Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing 61 per cent of Australian adults are now classified as overweight or obese, up from 56 per cent in 1995, the Dietitians Association of Australia has released a simple, four-step plan to help Australians ward off winter weight gain.
DAA spokesperson Milena Katz said the nation’s peak nutritional body wanted people to embrace healthy eating year-round.
“Physical activity levels often decline during winter,” she said.
“We don’t spend as much time outdoors expending energy. Therefore we do not need
as much food to fuel our bodies as we may need during other times of the year.
“So be sure to cut down on high energy, nutrient poor foods, such as cakes, biscuits and pies, and replace with plenty of lower energy nutritious options such as fruits and vegetables.
“Making it a priority during these three months to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly will help keep your weight in check and your body healthy, and help you feel your best.”
The DAA’s four step guide includes eating a healthy breakfast, using omega-3 fats found in fish to improve low mood symptoms, eating vitamin rich food rather than using pills to defend against colds and flus, and to swap comfort food such as puddings, pies and takeaway meals with healthy pastas, soups and steaks.
Ms Katz said expert advice from Accredited Practising Dietitians could help people keep their health in check.
“As many health experts say; prevention is better than a cure. So getting expert diet advice during winter can help prevent people from needing to turn to unproven detox diets and quick fixes to lose their winter weight come spring and summer.”

Around 1500 nurses and staff at New Zealand’s largest aged care provider have secured a 3.22 per cent pay rise, putting an end to their long-running pay dispute.
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation and the Service and Food Workers Union announced the deal, which fell slightly short of the union’s calls for a 3.5 per cent pay rise, but which also secured protection of overtime and other rights.
At its peak, the protracted nine-month dispute involved four-hour nursing strikes at more than 20 of Oceania Group’s 58 retirement villages and rest homes nationally, which provide care for more than 4000 New Zealanders.
The industrial action followed reports many experienced Oceania nurses were earning
up to $9000 less than similarly experienced colleagues at public hospitals.
SFWU spokesperson Alastair Duncan said the dispute highlighted widespread underfunding in the sector and a lack of focus on valuing care staff.
“The key issue in this dispute was getting government money passed on to the workforce and we are pleased that Oceania has now understood the need to pass on the funding it receives from District Health Boards to the care staff,” he said.
The Oceania agreement comes after a Human Rights Commission report found discrimination is rife against New Zealand’s 48,000 aged care workers.

The latest research on using cutting-edge transcranial magnetic stimulation technology to treat patients with neurogenic speech, language and swallowing disorders will be showcased to more than 500 Australian speech pathologists later this month.
Neuroscientist Professor Bruce Murdoch will unveil the new approach, a non-invasive method designed to help people with Parkinson’s disease and post-stroke patients communicate, in his keynote presentation at Speech Pathology Australia’s 2012 national conference in Hobart, Tasmania, from June 24-27.
Professor Murdoch is the founder and director
of the Centre for Neurogenic Communication Disorders Research at The University of Queensland, which is renowned world-wide for its research into physiological assessment and treatment of neurologically-based communication impairments.
Dr Murdoch’s presentation, including research and case examples, will be one of more than 130 presentations as part of the annual conference.
SPA national president Chris Stone said the conference would provide delegates with access to the latest research results and knowledge, which they could take back with them to their every-day practices.

A nurse has spoken out about the disheartening working conditions affecting nurses at Auckland District Health Board.
The nurse, who wants to remain anonymous, has revealed nurses do not have the time to listen to oncology patients with the ward short five full-time equivalent nurses, have a lack of basic equipment such as thermometers and pulse oximeters, and are struggling with overwhelming nurse shortages and a dramatic drop in the number of health care assistants.
“Probably the biggest stress of all is as nurses we simply do not have the time to actually sit
down with a patient when we see we need to, and actually hear what they need to tell us,” the nurse said.
“These (oncology) patients are fighting for their lives and we are not able to fully support this fight as we flit in and out and do just the basic tasks – this is really getting to just so many nurses not being able to fulfil our caring role.”
The revelations come after a New Zealand Nurses Organisation survey revealed Auckland DHB has shortages of more than 120 Registered Nurses, including 48 nurses at Starship Children’s Hospital.
NZNO organiser Craig Muir said nurses are overworked, stressed and morale was low, resulting in dangerous working conditions.
Mr Muir said a DHB budget blowout of $4 million had slowed the recruiting process, with new employees delayed up to three months in starting work, while there was also a non-replacement policy on all staff on annual or sick leave, and casual staff numbers have been dramatically reduced.
He said the DHB could resolve the situation by prioritising staff levels and patient care.
“DHBs and unions need to draw a line in the sand; cost cutting should not impact on staffing and quality patient care,” he said.
The anonymous Auckland nurse has also revealed patients’ showers are often neglected while elderly patients are forced to wear pads because there are not enough nurses and health care assistants to help patients to the toilet.
“This is totally degrading for a normally continent person. Some will struggle to get to the toilet and will have fallen attempting to get to the toilet,” the nurse said.
