Angus Productions Inc.’s coverage of the DENVER, CO (Feb. 9, 2006) — The 2006 Cattle Industry Annual Convention concluded Saturday with the election of new officers by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). Almost 5,000 cattlemen from across the nation attended the event, including delegations from 64 state and breed affiliates representing more than 230,000 members. Mike John elected president Huntsville, Mo., cattleman Mike John was elected NCBA president. John is manager of John Ranch Inc., a retained ownership, commercial cow-calf operation. He is also director of MFA Health Track Beef Alliance in Columbia, Mo., a feeder-cattle source and process verification program. John has previously served as chairman of NCBA’s Animal Identification (ID) Commission and its Membership and Association Services Committee. He also served as group chair of Industry and Producer Services for NCBA. John was president of the Missouri Beef Industry Council and was the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. He is a 1980 graduate of Kansas State University, with a degree in animal science. John thanked NCBA members for the opportunity to serve and expressed great optimism for the year ahead. “There’s more opportunity in the beef industry today than at any point in my lifetime,” he said. This convention marked the 10th anniversary of the meeting at which NCBA was created through a merger of the National Cattlemen’s Association (NCA) and the National Live Stock and Meat Board. But, John emphasized that the group’s history and member- driven policy process date back more than a century. “While we celebrate 10 years of NCBA, our organization has survived as a democracy for more than 107 years,” he said. Leadership recognized John also recognized the contributions of outgoing NCBA President Jim McAdams, a rancher from Adkins, Texas. Also paying tribute to McAdamswas Matt Brockman, executive vicepresident of the Texas andSouthwestern Cattle RaisersAssociation (TSCRA) — the NCBAstate affiliate of which McAdamshas been a longtime member andleader. Brockman introduced avideo message from TexasGovernor Rick Perry, whichrecapped McAdams’ manycontributions to Texas agriculture.

Officer team

Waynesville, N.C., cattlemanJohn Queen was elected NCBApresident-elect. He is president andowner of John Queen Farms, athird-generation cattle operationfounded in 1917.

“I am so proud of what NCBAand its affiliates and councils havedone for producers over the years,particularly last year to supportproducers hit hard by thehurricanes,” Queen said. “That’swhat NCBA is about for me:producers helping producers. Tocarry on this tradition will be a realhonor for me.”

Queen also owns and operatesSoutheast Livestock Exchange, avideo-telemarketing servicecovering the Southeast Region. Heis a past president of the NorthCarolina Cattlemen’s Associationand a member and director of theHaywood County (N.C.)Cattlemen’s Association. He is agraduate of Western CarolinaUniversity.

Paul Hitch, an Oklahoma cattlefeeder and stocker, was electedNCBA vice president. He operatesHitch Ent., which is an agriculturalproduction company that includesbeef, pork, corn, wheat, sunflowerand alfalfa production. Hitchresides on the Hitch Ranch, locatednear Guymon, which was foundedby his great-grandfather in 1884.He is a graduate of Oklahoma StateUniversity and holds a master’sdegree in business administrationfrom Stanford University.

“I consider it an honor and aprivilege to be chosen to serve asNCBA vice president,” Hitch said.“I look forward to traveling thecountry and visiting with all sorts ofbeef producers. We have the greatopportunity to work together tomake U.S. beef the most desiredmeat product in the world.”

Hitch previously served aschairman of NCBA’s Live CattleMarketing Committee, and wasNCBA Policy Division chairman in2005.

Cottonwood, Ariz., cattlemanAndy Groseta was elected as thenew chairman of the NCBA PolicyDivision. Steve Fogelsong ofAstoria, Ill., will serve as vicechairman.

NCBA’s Federation Division,composed of representatives ofparticipating state beef councils,will be under the leadership ofLarry Jones, a cattleman fromHolcomb, Kan. Gary Voogt ofMarne, Mich., will serve as vicechairman of the FederationDivision.
